FWB, if this is your first Von Gruff knife, you are in for a treat. If not, you already know the quality knife you are getting.

An idea for some members here:
I have 3 boys (and my son as the 4th) in my hunting party that are now 14 or 15. I realized that over my life I have only bought one knife, the rest were gifts. It is time to get these boys a very nice and unique knife to carry when we hunt together. I just ordered 3 knives from @Von Gruff . Theses knives will be a perfect gift to carry on the hunting tradition.

These 3 are in the present batch and having got the handles on yesterday should get everything done and sheaths started toward the end of this coming week.

Do you use any other bone for your knife handles ?
I havent as yet Ray, camel is supposed to be good but I havent had access to it . I was given a cow bone but it wasn't large enough the get sufficient thickness for one of the handles I was going try it on.

That would be great. The thick end of the leg bones. If you cut a section from the bone and check if it is thick enough for a knife handle. These were the giraffe leg bones cut into 5 inch lengths and you can see that there are three scales from the one piece with the 4th side being too thin down the length of the bone for a handle. This is the shin bones but I dont know what are the thicker bone on the buff leg so it would need to be a cut and see.

What is the approximate scale size for a normal handle? I’ll be hunting again this June, that would be a brilliant use for a leg bone.
(Although I don’t know about shipping the leg bone from USA to NZ?)

The minimum I would need is dependant on the knife they are to go on as the birds head or flared butt need extra width so that is a correspondingly larger bone but for the safari/skinner styled knife then 1 3/8 x 5/16 by 5 inch slab would be the minimum and shorter to about 4 1/4 long if a bolster was going to be used .
If the bone is cut into the slabs (bandsaw etc) then they can come as simple knife handle scales which is how I get all my buff horn etc sent over.

Hi the dude in the picture. It would be cool to know the area (genetics) of the stag you have in your profile picture. I am from New Zealand and shot a stag here that is almost identical, especially the throw backs. I can send you a photo to prove I'm genuine with my enquiry.
