That is about 5Ft 2 inches in total length, (about 3.5ft sticking out from the gums) they do not look all that thick where they would have come out the gums with a estimated thickness of 18 inches(probably closer to 17), but they taper down pretty fast, that gives 63 pounds....and 59.5 pounds @ 17 inches....

Are these the tusk weights alone or including the bases? Typical East African ivory as they are long, thin and symmetrical...

Maybe the pictures are playing tricks with my eyes...but I have a real hard time believing they weigh 158 lbs each. 58 lbs each yes.

Can you post a picture of the verified weight off the permit?
Where in East Africa are the tusks from?

Sorry to dissapoint you but those weights I am afraid are just not possible with that length..

Joao one of the magnificent seven with well documented tusk dimensions recorded had tusks with the following dimensions.

    Left-length 271 cm(106.69" or 8.89 foot), 70 kg(154 pounds) with 21.65 inch circumference at the lip.

His right tusk was 250 cm(98.42" or 8.2 foot), 60 kg(132 pounds) with 21.65 inch circumference at the lip.

On these length tusks about 1/4 will be inside the head and 3/4 will stick out. On a total length of 5ft 2 inches total length only 2/3 will be sticking out.

So using the formula used to judge elephant while hunting in the field we come to the conclusion that in order for these tusks to weigh 158 pounds with a total length of 5ft 2 inches then they would need a circumference one third up from the base of 45 inches......impossible...

185 and 183 pounds, the fourth largest pair of tusks ever recorded out of Africa and they only weigh 27 and 25 pounds more than yours....I would hang on to them if I where you..

It would be good to be completely familiar with current laws prior to trying to sell the ivory.

You may also wish to reweigh the ivory. I hate to disappoint you, but as lvW has indicated, they are not 158 lbs each. The four tusks below all weigh within 10 lbs of what you say your ivory weighs. You will be able to notice the difference between this ivory and yours.

The chest doesn't look like it is from East Africa, but it is extremely nice. Congratulations.

All the best in your endeavors.

Well of course the cat has his tongue as you rightly called him out on the weights. The post is similar to one a year ago where the guy was claiming massive weights for tusks no bigger than those I harvested. You hit the nail on the head .....the weights tossed out must include the bases and the cement inside the tusks which hold the threaded rods.

All that said they are a nice set of tusks. Wish it were legal to purchase in USA.

It is sure nice to have guys around here that know what they are talking about. Thanks from those of us that only wish they had a pair of tusks to show off.

    Nice symmetrical pair of tusks.

They are a bit thin for my liking, I prefer the thick more rugged even broken tipped tusks.

Shorter thick tusks much like big bosses on a buff instead of just spread. Shorter and fat on Ivory(unlike women of course!)
