A girl question about .454 Casull vs Desert Eagle.

Howdy all,
I just have a quick question for you firearm enthusiasts out there. I know very little about calibre and the many differences regarding a revolver/semi. Seriously, I am embarrassed to admit it but I have to ask, is a .454 Casull more powerful than a Desert Eagle? Hoping this is not perceived as an idiot question but I have very little knowledge when it comes to the calibre and grains and stuff. Consider this question my blonde/woman (even though I'm brunette) tribute to all of the stereotypes. My reason for asking is because of a debate someone started with me but I have to confess, I don't have the knowledge. I've never fired the DE but many times the Casull. Thanks all!! So far I have to stand by the Casull but mostly because Clint used it and my dad has one. Looking forward to testing a DE though, for sure. Only fired one on a Tomb Raider video game, and damn did Lara Croft make it look good. :think: :bulb:

The DE is a gun not a cartridge, but I think you know that. The .454 is more powerful than anything a DE is chambered for. Kicks lots too. By Clint do you mean Eastwood? Did he use a .454 in one of his movies? I must have missed that one. If you can handle the .454 you can handle the DE in any chambering.

Eastwood in Dirty Harry used a Model 29 S&W in 44Mag at that time the most powerfull handgun of it,s day,however Smith and Wesson didn,t have one available during the shoot so Clint used a Model 27 Same look as a 29,,I think DEs are chambered for 44Mag

The main outward appearance difference between the 27 and the 29 is the barrel. The 29 uses the heavy non tapered barrel and the 27's is tapered and lighter. Also the 27's cylinder is shorter. I think in one of his movies (Sudden Impact?) Clint used the .44 Auto Mag pistol too, I just don't remember him using a .454, but he might have. Per what I said above Jane, the DE is chambered in the huge .50 Action Express which is very close in power to the .454, but I still give the Casull the edge, though others may disagree.

Desert Eagle shoots a .500 Action Express - 300 gr XTP at 1475 fps generating 1449 ft/lbs energy
The .454 Casull revolver typically shoots a 300 gr XTP at 1650 fps for 1813 ft/lbs of energy

You could also load your Casull with a 240 gr XTP and up the velocity to 1900 fps with 1923 ft/lbs of energy, soundly trouncing the .500 AE.

This of course will vary with barrel length, so if its a bet ... The .500 is calculated with a 6" barrel above, whereas the .454 velocity is listed with a 7.5" barrel. In equal length barrels they'd be closer, and the Casull pistols come with barrels as short as 2.5". I think, given these facts, its safe to say the Casull is the more potent round.

I believe Harry's was one of the original 7.5's by the way.

If you're talking free recoil (kick) the typical Casull would kick harder because they are lighter as a rule than the Desert Eagle, especially with a full magazine.

Yep, that's the model my Dad has Stocky, I will confirm tomorrow but I am almost 100%. Love it!! Just had a brief glimpse of her this evening so seeing her lying there all alone brought back a lot of memories for me. Never wanted my dad to know how ignorant I truly am. Thanks again for the info. It wouldn't surprise me if he did use one somewhere, just don't remember. After all he did use a Model 70 .458 African in Dirty Harry to shoot at Scorpio with! A really dumb choice, but fun to watch. He got the recoil down pretty well for the scenes. Would have been better armed with a scoped AR15.

Ok fellas, I figured-out the movie that features the Casull and it is "Alien Nation", 1988 with James Caan. I mixed-up Clint Eastwood's movie with it because Clint used the AMP Auto Mag Model 180 in "Sudden Impact" . Another wicked weapon. Sorry, my bad. Alien Nation is a great movie by the way, I love James Caan. Thanks again for the input!! I won my debate I think having said the Casull is more of a beast. You must be shaking your heads thinking "Damn woman".. Hahaha!!

Just spoke with my dad. His Casull is a Freedom Arms model. Hope to have more detail when I visit him tomorrow. I love that weapon.

The revolver he has looks almost exactly like this one (sans the sling) in the attachment, however, I am not sure about what type of scope my dad has on her. All I know is I love to fire this beautiful beast. It's better than, well, I won't mention. Let's just say I'd take a day at the range with the Casull over "chocolate" any day.

Excellent info, thank you so much. I think I might have a slight grasp on the concept of calibre and velocity, or at least a limited perception. All I know is how to shoot with the biggest and most aggressive weapons around, thanks of course to my dad and his high standards for me. He also taught me how to be a sous chef. Your advice and comments are so very helpful to me. Now I just have to ask my pop what type of ammo he has for her. I've learned so much about so many things since I have joined AH. It's a privilege to be a member of this site.

Oh my, shooting pistols better than a three letter word (lol)....I have never shot anything that big in pistols before so my hat is off to you!!! I guess I just love my rifles....and to a lesser degree my muzzleloader and shotguns.

Oh hell yes Enysse, although it's only because you have your mind in the gutter that you were referring to a "3 letter word". I posted "chocolate" .... Hahahahahaha! And yes, if you wish to compare, I would still prefer a day on the range vs that 3 letter word.
Well, to be honest, as a woman with a "low center of gravity" (my fat ass and large muscle mass ) and a dad that constantly inspires me to be strong and ruthless, I must be able to handle any weapon that's put in my hand. The side-effects are just that, a "side-effect". Doesn't hurt when I pull the trigger, only after sometimes if I don't do it right. No pain, no gain. I love a powerful rifle just as much(my #1 rifle is my .416 Rigby, the rifle I took my buff with, a gift from my dad after he shot his own buff). . Not only that, but to have an ability to be accurate with both types of weapon is something I strive for. Much more than an obsession for me to be dead-on with the shot, I have to be perfect.
Damn, I just realised I am a lost cause. I strive to impress my dad and make him proud of me. It's a ruthless struggle because I have to compete with my two older brothers. Let's just say as it stands now I have them beat (at least in my own world). God help the shrink I hire someday. Any challenge my dad gives me I have to conquer it. If I disappoint him it kills me.
