    Hello folks,

The internet is a great thing until you actually want to look something up. Either I'm retarded or it is... The jury is out at the moment on that. I'm trying to figure out whether or not the 9.3x74R (I know it's light for buff but I know a certain top notch gunsmith who used it for elephant and had complete pass through on the skull and swears it works juuuust fine after taking three buffs with his without a back up shot being fired). I ask because I am booking a hunt hopefully in September to RSA with paw print and I keep getting conflicting info as to whether it meets the minimum caliber requirement if there is one (usually 375 I know) and I can snag a chapuis Ugex for a song and it's minty so say the least. Buying it is a no brainer but I want to use the darned thing for more than plains game and deer and bear here in the US. I have a 458 to take but the little Ugex is pretty sweet. Soooo.... Help.

    Thanks all,
    Sean

Most of the ordinances chatter about not using .22.
However most of your hunting is likely within a CAE and the rules are slightly different than typical open seasons.

Pieter has a very nice large bore he can loan you if you lost confidence in your 9.3 in the field for some reason. :)

    In Namibia:
    5400 Joule for buffalo,elephant,rhino etc

    Wiki says this:
The 9.3×74mmR is of a rimmed, bottleneck design and uses a .366-inch (9.3 mm) diameter bullet, usually weighing 286-grain (18.5 g). According to Hornady, at this weight the velocity is 2,362.20 ft/s (720.00 m/s) and energy is 3,536 ft·lb (4,794 J)

So, technically, not with these stats.

Thanks brickburn, those specs are correct. Unless you hand load but I'd hate to hear t rod the Ugex. A no. 1 would handle hotter though. Other option is 450-400 or a merkel I saw in 470 nitro but if I buy one of those the hunt will have to wait just a bit longer. Oh when are officials going to figure out energy isn't what kills. I shot hanging logs, plates of steel etc over the years to prove to the average person that energy doesnt calculate accurately. 5000 ftlbs wont rip a log etc apart or hurl it 20 feet. Depending on its size, it may knock it over rather unceremoniously. My 458 with 500's does not "push" with as much energy as a big man shoving you upon impact. Yup, big hole, massive tissue damage and potentially death but not energy transfer. Ug. I know that's their yardstick but ...

Brickburn, I sure he does! The chapuis is just a sexy little rig. If I do my part Pieter should just have to watch and smile. Worst case (I'm actually a pretty darned good shot buuuuut I've never shot a buff) he has to back me up. That however is something I'd rather not have happen however. If I had an ego it would be bruised at that point. I have been researching the anatomy of buffalo

As a general guideline here is what I'd say if you amalgumize all the rules and average them.

If they allow 9.3 at all for DG, the 9.3x64 brenneke is the one usually legal.

If they say .375 is minimum, the .375h&h flanged is the minimum threshold.

And when you're in no man's land where nobody cares what you do, there are really hot bolt action .338s with proper heavy Bullets that will seal the deal.

The 9.3x74r is a Germanic gun so I'd think if ever a place would allow it, it would be Namibia. You'd have to research that specific.

Uploading the 74r is a moot point because people usually have one in a double and then you can't get it to regulate if you hot rod the load.

Province regulations apply to those who follow them and on publicly hunting concessions. I don't think there are any public available Buffalo in RSA. Far too valuable.
I have come across some reserves held by public companies that have their own rules, eg .270W min for all plains game.

On private land in RSA you can use anything you like. No one checks at the airport and the kak will hit the fan for the PH and land owner if things go wrong. Check with your PH. If he is happy for you to use that rifle and cartridge, do so. If anyone asks, tell them its for wildebeest or zebra or sable .....

If something goes wrong on the hunt, you will end up in some serious hot water, a PH that thinks differently, I wouldn't book with.

In my 24 years as a PH the rules on everything have changed some every now and then.

Patrick , could you please post the minimum Caliber requirement for Buffalo as set out in the latest Limpopo ordinance.

The hunt might take place in another province which could change things some.

On a side note on the caliber itself , the 9.3 x 74 R is more than capable to cleanly kill a Buffalo. Enjoy the hunt.

    Hunting regards
