anyone reloading the 458 win and 500 gr bullets able to chrony 2200fpm with the powders available today?

Western powders accurate 2460 they list I think 2192 from the 458 with 500 grain bullets and a 24 inch barrel.

I'll let you know when I get home (cannot recall as it's been a while since I've loaded 458 Win Mag...load for the 458 Lott in the RSM but had some brass and therefore loaded 458 Win Mag for it some time ago and was impressed with the results).

You guys have me curious now. I have 458 model 70 Winchester with a 24 inch barrel and the accurate 2460 is the fastest velocity that I’ve seen listed with any powder. I’m going to have to load some up and take it out and shoot it over my chronograph if we ever get any decent weather here. I don’t have any 500 grain I don’t think, but I do believe I have some 480 grain so depending on what I have I’ll try to see if I can get out and shoot some and what kind of velocities I get. Like I said I’m just curious but you started me to wonder.

If I was shooting a 458 I'd shoot 480 grain bullets, no question. The only issue would be the location of the cannelure as its placed a bit high for the 458 (it being placed for loading the 450 Nitro and its kin). In other words, if you want to crimp on the cannelure, you may be giving up some case capacity.

I think Woodleigh makes 480 grain bullets specifically for .458WM, and different ones for the old Nitros. I don’t know for certain, but worth a look.

Correct Ben. The Woodleigh 480gn RN is just perfect for the 458WM, allowing just that bit more powder space.

My old M70 with 76gr of Accurate AA2230 gave me an average of 2206 fps with Hornady 500gr FMJRN.

Try some 450gr flat nosed CEB or North Fork solids with about 74gr of AA230 , averaged 2215 fps in my rifle.

The 450gr flat nosed solids will give you incredible penetration ,are easier on the shoulder and do not have the
powder compaction issues you sometimes get with 500gr bullets; all this depends on if they feed properly
in you rifle.

I have a custom .458 WM with a 20” barrel built on a DWM Mauser action. Looking back through my load info, I have gone up to a max load of 75.0 gr of AA2230 with an average velocity of 2244 fps with Hornady 500 gr interlok’s. I backed down to 73.0 gr and loaded Hornady DGS & DGX 500 gr at an average velocity of 2177.
With CEB 450 gr Solids I found that Alliant RL-10x gave the best velocity and lowest Std Deviation. The load I settled on was 69.0 gr of RL-10x for an ave. velocity of 2284 fps.
Norma brass and CCI 250 primers were used with all loads.

Pair that 450gr CEB solid with the 420gr CEB Raptor and you're set.

Yup, I think those Raptors at about 2350fps would make a pretty good Buff hammer :)

I don’t have a .458 WM , i do however have a .458 Lott , i agree with the lighter bullet .

I fire a 450g bullet and although the Lott and WM differ with case length , i find the 450g bullet a better option.

My speed is 2250fps from a 22” barrel and the recoil is manageable.

In conclusion, I would definitely shoot a lighter bullet out of your WM.

I have yet to have met anyone who ever personally seen any of the bs that is spread by Jabberers about the 458.

I get and have gotten close to 2200 fps with a 500 gr solid longer than the majority of the 458' s detractors have been alive.

My favorite rifle is a extra light weight with a 21 inch barrel and custom plywood and carbon fiber stock. That outfit is set up for 350 grain expanding bullets at well over 2500 fps+ and is extremely accurate.

I get consistent 2150 fps from a 24” barrel with H 335. And it is NOT a compressed load.

500 Grainers just aren't necessary with todays bullets........CEB and Barnes monos especaially. I like the 450 grain in both the Lott and the Win Mag.

2200fps is eay with either in the win mag and can go really good in the Lott!

Yes. Getting 2260 fps with 450 gr solid barnes banded. Consistently.

As you drop bullet weight MM and KO values decrease. The trend with some is to go up in bullet weight increasing MM, KO and sectional density.
