416WSM on Siamese Mauser & 416/348Ackley Improved on Martini

Thats just a minor detail, trifling, nothing to worry about :ROFLMAO:
@Rule 303
That's no problem a different 25 cal like the 250 Savage will solve that problem
See easy solution.
Don't give me the crap that brass is hard to find, crap, just neck up cheap 22-250 brass and done.

It has been a while, a few distractions (like buying a Komatsu PC75UU-1 for a future project).
Got a bit of time in the shed this afternoon and started fitting the front end.
Down to the last mm of getting it spotted in.

Blue flyer , i envy your equipment & your ability, great work, i had Swan gunsmiths re barrel my vanguard to 243 AI it shoots 3 shot .75 moa groups with 90 grain Hornady eldx bullets at 3270 fps with Starline brass & RL19 out of 24 INCH bbl. I annealed the cases after the fire forming. i would like to do a 6.5x55 AI , but reamers & dies are a problem with our f**** whit prime ministers new import laws i can not even buy checkering cutters out of the USA. I may try to make some .
To make checkering cutters use a thread chasing file of the appropriate tpi to cut the teeth is some silver steel or tool steel. Aliexpress is where I have bought the thread chasing files.
At this point I am no where competent enough to try checkering on this stock.

Forend is close to being on, final smoking in to do. At this point it is weighing 6.7Lbs, but that is without the butt stock screw and I am going to balance it out with a big steel nut to clamp in the butt stock to balance out the rifle. Hopefully I can get to 7lbs.

BLUE FLYER you are very skilled i am envious.

I wanted to get more weight into it. The butt screw was an obvious option. The easiest way to make a new 7/16UNC stud to the right length was to get 2, 7/16UNCX6" bolts and then machine a socket in 1 and a dowl in the other and then TIG weld together.
20260801_160325.jpg

The weight comes in the "nut" which I made out of 3/4" silver steel and threaded 7/16UNC for 40mm deep (nothing like mixing units), (I was educated at the transition from Imperial to Metric in Australia). The assembly below weighed 16oz.

When assembled so that the action is not locked up by the butt stock screw impinging on the breach block, the nut is approximately 19mm below the butt surface.

The assembled rifle is now 7.85Ibs and the balance is slightly muzzle heavy. Given the 416/348 Ackley improved is basically a rimmed 416WSM this rifle should easily duplicate 450/400 3" balistics.

This gun is pointing like a shot gun. This is why I love the Martinis so much. You just just throw it up to the shoulder and the sights are perfectly aligned.
I remember once with my 45/70 Martini, a fox ran out of a creek. It was basically mount the rifle, move the bead through the line the fox was running and squeeze the trigger, and fox was split in half and completely disembowled (dead) but that all happened by reflex.
Next steps are to finish the fore end, barrel band sling mount and fore sight.

I have to tell you guys, this is like wizardry to me. Both my Grandfather's were machinists, but didn't want me to follow in their footsteps. "Go to college and make something of yourself." You know where I'm going. God rest them both, they just didn't want me to work as hard as they did. Alas, turn me loose with something as simple as a double cut file and it's all over but the crying. We'll done and good luck with your project!!

My brother in law is similar to you when it comes to anything remotely connected to handyman stuff.
I saw him trying to nail some timber together once. I gave him the nickname of lightning because like lightning he didn't strike the same spot twice. That nail was safe after the first hit

Hmm.
I went to University and got a degree in Manufacturing Systems and then worked 35 years in automotive design and supply. During the degree we had 1 subject which was in the machine shop using lathes and mills. I happened to get a High Destinction for that subject.
I bought my first Chinese lathe and a Bridgestone M head mill in my early 20's and started teaching myself. Got alot easier when the University of Youtube came along. Long story short, I have no formal training in Gunsmithing, all self taught from books and videos!

I worked for 32 years in the technical department in the Australian office or a major US diesel manufacture, one of the head engineers had a business card with so many titles after his name , he could not knock a nail into wood, what a over educated wanker.

Started on the front sight base today. The bandsaw helps to hogg out the blank from the chunk of steel.

Then I squared it up in the milling machine.
Once squared, then chucked it up in the lathe using the 4 Jaw chuck to bore the barrel hole. The 5/8" drill measures out at 15.885mm and the barrel measures 16.445mm. Tomorrow I will use the boring bar to open up to diameter.
