Do any of you guys happen to have a H20 case capacity for your 416 ruger? My fully formed norma brass in my taylor improved has an H20 capacity of 97.0. So far this is what I have worked up with 350 and 400 grain bullets. All were developed in 95 plus degree weather, and i have 7 reloads on this brass and still have tight primer pockets. Still have not ran into pressure signs, but this where I stopped load developed anyways.

#350 speer MT 83 gr RL15= 2699fps
#350 TTSX 79 gr RL15= 2638fps
#400 DGX 76 gr RL15= 2450fps

Just trying to see how the taylor improved compares to the 416 ruger.

My .375 Ruger turns in 102 of H2O - not the exact same, but maybe will help a little bit - I refused toview the .416 Ruger guide gun that was up for sale in the classifieds recently, or I would be able to help you with the exact cartridge. Good thing I didn't look at it - I would have bought it!

Haha i understand. I been watching a model 70 safari in 416 rem mag on gunbroker. Ive had to stop myself from bidding. It needs to hurry up and close the auction before I loose my self control

The Speer Handloading Manual Number 15:

416 Ruger
Average Case Capacity = 100 grains H2O.
Max Average Pressure = 62,000 psi - SAAMI

416 Remington
Average Case Capacity = 107 grains H2O.
Max Average Pressure = 65,000 psi, 54,000 CUP - SAAMI

The same manual lists the 416 Ruger:
Maximum Load for 350 grain Speer Mag-Tip SP Hot-Cor, 24” Test Barrel, Alliant Reloader 15 as,
82.2 grains for 2619 FPS

416 Remington, Same 350 grain bullet and Reloader 15, Max Load:
85 grains = 2629 FPS, 24” Test Barrel

And you should have bought it.
Never mind, you have a safari coming up.
Put the $$ towards a Giraffe.

Thanks! That has me thinking my max loads are not as safe as I thought. I doubt my 25.5" barrel would make much of a velocity difference either. I do still feel confident my hunting loads are safe though they are:

*350 MT 78.5 gr RL15 = 2610 fps
*350 TTSX 75.5 gr RL15 = 2530 fps
*400 DGX 75 gr RL15 = 2411 fps

I doubt anything would survive your loads just make sure you load the new bonded version of DGX at those speeds. 2350fps is plenty for the 416 and a 400gr bullet.

Thanks, If I ever got to hunt in Africa I would definitely load 400's to 2300-2350 fps. To guarantee no pressure issues.

Personally, I would consider your hunting loads maximum loads. But, I hunt with no-issue with near maximum / maximum book loads.

I am not a ballistics tech/ scientist / or engineer, but it would seem you are inline with this Speer Manual.

I don’t think anything on the receiving end, would have any less terminal reception at 100 FPS less than your hunting loads.

I will add, I hunt where the mid 70 degrees would be the Very Hot day. I hunt Alaska, usually mid 60 degrees or less.
I have shorter barrels on my 416 Rugers and 416 Remington. The Ruger is 20” and Remington 22”.

The 350 grain TSX bullet is bullet that I have been using for the 416 Ruger. I have not yet chronographed my loads. I obtained the load data from a gentleman that writes / wrote for European sporting magazines and did a lot of work with Barnes bullets and the 416 Ruger. I am 1.5 grains less than his maximum with IMR 4320. He was getting 2500 FPS with a 23” barrel. Wild ass guess on my part but, guessing 2350’ish out of my 20”. It worked well on the couple of moose that I have shot with it. And groups outstanding at 100 meters. The areas that I hunt, 200-225 yds is the absolute maximum shot distance. Usual distance is about 25 to 175 yds.

I hope to finally chronograph these within a few days. I want to load the 350 grain Tipped TSX. It’s b.c. maintains velocity better. Which is not a major issue at my distances. But, I will take what I can easily get.
With all that said, with my shorter barrels, I will be satisfied with 2350 FPS. I am hoping for in the low 2400 FPS range.

From speaking with Barnes, the 416 Ruger is/was on their list for their eventually forthcoming reloading manual.

My typical ranges are from powder burn range to 175 yards lol. Our deer season is pretty much from 25 to 45 degrees on average. So I do all my load development during the summer. only have whitetail, or occasional pig to hunt. Thats why I'm pretty much sticking to the 350 speers, as I figure that is probably the softest 416 bullet available. Ive had pretty good luck with the 350 TTSX as far a accuracy. That bullet does eat up a pretty good bit of powder space in my case. If I had moose and really large game like you do in Alaska, the the 350 TTSX would be my choice too.
