308 Winchester Caliber Opinions...

As you can see in my Picture I'm using a CZ550 Mannlicher Carbine, I load 42Gr of Winchester 748, others may have other loads to try but I get some close groups out to 200 meters certainly good enough to drop that Kudu with one shot
Thanks Rob!...
I dont know if you know that, but in my country the reloading materials as bullets, powder, etc etc are very few and also controlated so the little amount who we can use are really very limitated...
Here, the W748 are a rare thing, I never hear abot that...
I use an argentinian powder, named as "A27", produced by the FM factory...
As ineresting thing, in my Remington Corelokt 165 gn bullets, I use the same ammount of powder (A27 as i said) 42 gn
In my 18" barrel the bullets flight as 2600 fps inthe mouth!
I might both powders shoul be similars...
Greetings!

It's difficult to talk about powders as many countries have different powders available, I guess were lucky in the US to have many powders available to us,,2600FPS out of 18" barrel is pretty fast

Yes, in fact, with this argentinian powder in my short barrel, the performance seems look very well...
The velocity fall down with the lighter bullets in my rifle so i prefer the medium weights to use and hunt!
And its true, in EEUU there must be so many offers!

2600 fps is a very useful velocity! Even cheap bullets work very well at that speed as they are not overstressed. Hunting in my area, range is not over 100 yards and usually well under. I load all my jacketed bullets at about this velocity and have never had a bullet problem or it's ability to put the game down quickly. I don't have a .308 but several .30'06s, 7x57s, .358 Winchester and .300 Savages all, without exception, like this speed.

Yes, I see the same thing about the bullet speed! Between 2200 and 2700 fps are a gap when the bullets are very lethals with a few meat damage!

I bought my, at the time, 10 year old son a Ruger American Rifle in .308. I researched the .30 cals and their recoil and found the .308 to be the best fit. Of course I was thinking of him on his first PG Safari in 2019 when I bought this gun!
With a suppressor it has virtually no recoil. We still have a year,he will be 13, to get ready for his first Safari.

Shockingly, I've used it a bit. :E Angel: I shoot a few thousand rounds of 155 grain .308 each year (and a few hundred heavier in F/TR).

When I hunted in South Africa this year, I only brought my target rifle, and borrowed a rifle for the hunt. I was offered a 375H&H or a suppressed R700 in .308, with the strong suggestion that I use the .308. I was surprised that they didn't suggest something bigger for waterbuck and zebra, but it did the job well.

hahaha, "308win", i might you{re preferred cartridge must be another hahaha...
The PH knows the performance in the field very well! Some people underestimate some shots, or weapons, or scopes, because they have prejudices based upon a lot kind of ideas, much of them wrong...

Much like my hatred of the 270 win I've never used and never will (y):whistle::whistle:

Sorry about that... I cant undestand the question, and (yes, the question isn{t to me) but even the 270 are a good shot, the 308 dont envy anithyng!

Sorry Marcos, my response about the 270 not caring what someone's opinion of it was not directed toward you.

The 308 is a good round. A little too vanilla for me but still a solid dependable caliber.

The .308Win is one of the best "all round" hunting cartridges ever developed. Its not a specialist anything, but with lighter loads (150 conventional) it makes an adequate open plains antelope round and with heavier bullets (180gr conventional or 150 monometal) it makes a great bush gun, very capable of cleanly taking any large antelope, Zebra, etc at moderate ranges (say 200m).
Real life performance is in the same class as that if a 30-06, just in a more compact package and with less recoil.
I have shot literally hundreds of animals ranging from springbuck to kudu and blue wildebeest with it - mostly one shot kills. I also know of eland, giraffe and even buffalo having been cleanly taken with it. (Not recommended but it has been done).

I´m shure of that! I´m very happy with my 308...
So true words...

I think the308 is one of the most useful cartridges available, along with a few others such as the 7mm-08, 270 Win, 30-06 and 7mm Rem Mag. It is capable of making clean kills to any range that most shooters have any business shooting. It offers 150-180gr options with enough velocity to be useful at longer ranges for most of the world's NDG-deer, elk, antelope, bear, moose, APG. I think I wouldload a 165gr Partition to around 2800ish for everything. It does have limits, yes, but the cartridge's limits, I think, match up well with the average shooters limits. Even for elk or moose, the 308 has plenty out to 350yds for sure, a bit further if everything is just right. For the average shooter who hasn't had any formal long range training, that's a long poke. The 308 is capable of extreme accuracy, and recoil is very acceptable and mild by most standards, in average weight sporters. Ammunition is widely available. So much to like about a cartridge like that! I think it is really under-rated with all the attention going to the big wiz bang super zapper magnums. I do think most shooters would benefit from shooting something like the 308 that they can handle comfortably, will spend time shooting in practice, yet is still very effective, and would enjoy every bit of it. I think I recall reading somewhere, that while undergoing development by Winchester for the US military, more research and development went into the 308 than any other cartridge in history. At least they have a lot to show for all that work.

Spot on. The only qualification I would make is that one needs to be mindful of range. As in best don't try to take large animals down at long range. It wasn't designed designed with that in mind. However with suitable bullets it can take most things down at moderate ranges. The list includes gemsbuck, kudu, wildebeest, and even giraffe. I also know of a few buffalo taken (cleanly) with this calibre. However I don't suggest you try that at home lest things go pear shaped!

Yes, of course! Well defined!...
Reading this, I´m might "I don´t write it better"... There are my feelings and experiences with the 308 cartridge.
Thnks

That´s OK daga boy, Here in my country Most hunters who despise 308 are because they want to use it outside their limits. Knowing what those limits are (in their range and benefits) I believe that it is unsurpassed, co-opted with its competitors and much more economical and practical to use, recharge, and maintain
