240gr 30-06 - how would you use it?

I’ve been using 220Gr Remington Core Lokts in a .30-06 to hunt plains game in Africa for the last 48 years. Recently, I switched to 220Gr Sako Hammerheads. I’ve always been impressed. The 220Gr works very well, especially on eland or Kudu. Of course, ranges must be kept reasonable.

Now, 240Gr is stretching things quite a bit.

The Woodleigh manual mentions the 240 gr. .308 was intended for the .30-06, std twist barrel. Cool. So I loaded some up using H4831SC and tried them on our little moose we have in these parts. A bit of overkill, but I'd like to use them on Eland and a someday trip down under on anything they'd let me have a go at.

Never thought about the 240s, I have started running the 180gr Swift Scirocco with Reloader 26 getting 2940fps and pairing it with a 180gr CEB solid with 4350 getting 2820fps just incase the need arises for a solid

I enjoy shooting hornandy 220 interlocks in my 30-06. I need to try them on game. For 200 yards and less I can’t think of a reason to use a different bullet.

I developed a load for the 240 grain Woodleighs. It was around 2400 fps with H4350. Took them along with many other developed loads to cull wildebeests. They killed every wilde but did not do anything remarkable. I killed 5 wildes with each load and kept a journal of overall effectiveness, penetration, etc... It works, but not any better than 180s.

I am curious what senarios (conditions or game) will the 240gr 30-06 provide real value over the 200gr or even 180gr? How much penetration do you really need on the game an '06 is good for?

Have new ranch with extended range distances and would enjoy teaching grandchildren to shoot at great distances

I know in past posts you've been an advocate of the 220 CLs (but also that they were hard to track down), so I'm curious, did you make the switch to improve accessibility of the ammunition, or because you were wanting a 'premium' bullet offering?

I have the Sako Deerhead for my 6.5x55, and wouldn't flinch at the 220gr Hammerhead for the 30-06. So interested in your feedback.

They are both excellent. At the time I made the original post, 220Gr Remington Core Lokts were unavailable to me while the 220Gr Sako Hammerhead was. But now, Remington has them in stock again.

Based on what I’ve experienced with the Sako Hammerhead… It’s an extremely well constructed bullet that is to be thoroughly relied upon. But my #1 preference shall always be for the Remington Core Lokt (albeit purely for more nostalgic reasons than any other).

I have had the 180Gr Remington Core Lokt bullet completely disintegrate to pieces once upon striking a zebra’s scapula. But the 220Gr Remington Core Lokt has never once let me down.

I use a 220 grain core lockt it works great on everything I have ever shot with it and prints a 1/2 inch group out of my drilling.

Aa I’m an old fart and my memory might be playing havoc on me, but didn’t the original Barnes produce a 250gr .30 cal bullet? I think I remember reading Jack O’Connor doing an Alaskan bear hunt with them.

Heaviest I've ever used in .308 calibre is 200gr. Use the Sierra Match Kings in my .300 Winchester. Very accurate. 180 is the heaviest I've used on game. 240 is interesting

I designed a bullet mould just for the heaviest slug I could cram into an 06 case and feed from a pre 64. It came up to 255 gr and was pushed along at a leisurely 2245 avg fps with a load of H4350. It has been an absolute hammer on anything I've used it on.

Admittedly, that's been big bodied whitetail at every angle, a few yotes that were in the wrong place at the wrong time and some feral pigs. I've never recovered one of these bullets, every time the animal tends to not have enough mass to stop them. It answered the *can it* question, but it doesn't kill anything more dead than my 180 gr cast at a similar speed.
