2024 Deer Season

This photo from this morning is the best one that I have had on the place this year. They tend to be spindly here, but I can't stretch him more than 3 1/2. The rut will start fairly soon, so perhaps an uncle will show up. I had a great 10 pt. on camera at the end of the season last year.

I had been watching this deer on a cellular game camera. Went opening day and it did not show up. For the past week I had not seen the deer on camera. I thought the neighbor took him on opening morning. Then, he shows up mid afternoon and heads back into the brush before I could shoot. About 4:20 he walks back out and starts out after another buck (the rut has not started yet where I hunt) the other one runs off and present me a open shot and in the back of the truck he goes. Unfortunately, I think he's a little young, he only weighted 126 field dressed. I am used to in the 140's for average.
Looks identical to mine from Throckmorton County, but mine has an extra sticker point. Congrats!

No luck for me, my friend’s in-laws sold the place we used to hunt. We’ve been unsuccessful finding a lease. May go to a friend’s farm to get a doe or two (y)

I don’t have much to offer… just a little 135 acre place that’s covered up with does and pigs, that occasionally gets a nice buck to come around.. but if you ever just need a place to sit by a fire for a weekend and bag a little venison for the freezer (doe are super easy to come by), feel free to come to Texas for a few days..

Well I did 21 miles on foot in a day and a morning but can't seem to come up with much, at least of the right thing. Passed on some little forky muleys and a little basket rack 4x4 whitetail but can't seem to find the dominant bucks. Of course I bump into this guy out of season, pretty good bull for here. Hope everyone's seasons are going well

Tagged a little spike on Saturday morning… been watching him on the trail cams for almost 2 months… not much to look at.. but he’ll fill the freezer a bit…

I’m pretty sure they’re on the leading edge of the rut in E TX now… we caught a little button buck trying to mount a doe on a trail cam last week, and the spike was in full idiot mode in broad daylight… we’re supposed to have a good temp drop this week.. I’m hoping they’re rutting good by this weekend and maybe one of our better bucks will step out..

Filled my 2024 whitetail tag this morning. Tough seeing any mature bucks this year. Had pics of a real nice one but he’s pretty nocturnal. Was happy to get this fellow. Now I need to help family members get theirs.

I just moved from the UK to the US last year and couldn’t be out last season due to having a new born. I’m trying to be out this season to have my first American deer. It is completely different compared to the UK. I used to hunt almost every month in the UK even though there is no public land hunting there. I’m here in PA and waiting for the rifle season to try my luck. Close to where I live there is restrictions for bottle neck cartridges so o have to try my luck a bit further. I did buy a 1981 Winchester mod 70 XTR featherweight in .308 in the UK and took it the states with my other guns. I am planning to use that gun. Wish me luck guys.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
