2 weeks from today my wife and I will be flying out for our first safari. We will be hunting with Global Safaris in Limpopo. I am chasing Cape buffalo with my bow, my bucket list animal. My wife has kudu on her hit list. Also have Impala, Blesbok, and Sable on the list. Everything but buff will be rifle hunted. Then we will be going to Vic Falls for 3 days before heading home.

Woke up this morning at 1:30 with anxiety of everything to get done. Jobs to finish up at work, pack unpack a bazillion times, meds for flying, paperwork, ect. But looking at some trail cam pics we have been sent and knowing in 2 weeks I will be chasing buffalo has it all worth it.

Best of luck on your hunt. Just one question, why Buffalo with a bow? You don't seem to be a single weapon hunter, as so many archers are.

I hunted Buffalo six years in a row with Alister Norton in Zambia. I had an inkling to do the same thing once, as I bow hunt in the states. Alister was willing to do it but made a comment that dissuaded me. "I have never recovered a Buffalo shot with a bow"

Please keep in mind, this was his comment, not mine. I have seen Buffalo take some un-believable punishment. That said, I'm sure a very well placed first shot with a bow would produce a very anti-climactic end, a mediocre or poor shot will produce a long day a VERY long day perhaps several.

    Wish you success.

Good luck to you! I would agree that I'm curious about the bow being used for a buffalo as well. Recently it resulted in a PH going to hospital (Bossie) when the client hit the animal with a badly placed crossbow shot. Now, that being said can it be done? From everything I've read yes, absolutely. And if this is your dream then I get it, 100%. I'm just curious because it seems like a much larger risk to all involved, and on an animal that is famous throughout Africa for being able to absorb large caliber shots.

Every time I read a a thread on getting ready for the first safari to Africa, I relive mine all over again....and it brings this quote to me all over again:

“The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa – for he has so much to look forward to.”

    Happy hunting!

Thanks guys for all the positive responses. I guess in regards to the bow thing, it is just kind of been on my bucket list. When I went to DSC and talked with some outfitters some said I was doing it backwards. You should go gun for cape and bow for pg. I just always wanted to do a cape with a bow.
I know it’s more dangerous, and there was a ph just hurt by one. And I continue to pray he and his family do well. But I had a new 80 lb bow with 800 grain arrows and 175 gr 2 blade head built for cape buffalo. The bow shop that I used has built many setups for just dangerous game so I have to trust them.
Since my wife will be with us the ph at global safaris said he and another ph will have 458 Lotts off safe when I take my shot. I was told we will be blind hunting. I also understand that if something doesn’t go as planned they will harvest this animal no questions asked and I am alright with that.
I also have spoken with some members on this forum that have taken buff with a bow. They have given me advice on what worked for them. I bought the book the perfect shot and studied it. I watched YouTube videos on archery Cape buffalo hunts every Sunday before church (my and my wife’s agreement). Even though I know it’s hunting I am doing everything in my power to have it go my way for my bucket list animal and first safari.
