I have just finished another "pair" of rifles that would make up a dandy 2 rifle battery and with the right bullets would suit many (if not most) occasions that one may come across in the hunting fields.
I have had three "pairs" over the years and still have most although the 404 Jeffery has been moved on
The first pair would be familiar and suitable for most occasion that those on the forum might anticipate in the hunting fields that is the general realm this forum deals with.
DWM 7x57

paired with the FN 404 Jeffery

The next pair I did was somewhat older but would still account for many area of game hunting
The Martini Enfield carbine in 303

paired with the Martini 577-450

I have just finished a 3rd pair and again it has a 303 on a Mk l* action from 1900
Buff cap and tip with the Lee Speed styled stock I have come to really enjoy making and using

And its stablemate is a BSA Commercial Mk l action in 400 Lee Speed (my own version of the slightly shortened 405Winchester case to 2.410 and loaded to 3.052 OAL

Another pair I have for my small game hunting is the 20 Var Targ on a Rem X R 100 action and my wildcat 6.5 Grendel-Max on a mini mauser.

So what have the rest of you paired up as being able to compliment each other

Beautiful rifles! Had to look to find out about the 'batteries".

I remember you posting the pic of that 404J quite awhile ago......it's still purty!

It has gone now Phil and was the way into building the two Martini's and the Lee Speed in 303. Doing a couple of lee Speeds for a another guy got me into the 400 I paired it with.

very nice rifles!

What is the story with the peep backsights on those Martini action rifles.

Enjoy the photos.

Still like the 7x57/404j combo the best.

The idea of pairing rifles for a safari makes perfect sense if you don't mind hauling more than one rifle over-seas but, I am too lazy and too cheap - LOL.

Furthermore, my computer skills are non-existent so, I cannot post any rifle photos at this stage.

However, even if I could, mine would pale in comparison to these exceptional beauties you have posted here.

I love all the rifles you have shared with us here, both the artistic workmanship and the calibers - all very perfect (except that I never heard of the 20 Var targ or the 6.5 Grendel-Max so, I have no opinion on those last two cartridges you mentioned).

My compliments to you sir, you are both an artist and a man of fine taste in hunting rifles.

(But what happened to the muzzle brakes, and cadmium battery powered, electronically stabilized, 26 different reticule-variable power 6.5 to 24x Hubble Telescopes with built in GPS / range finder, bubble level, microwave oven, video games and 75mm notched lens to fit over the stainless fluted barrels, in extra high rings, plastic butt-stocks with flaming NASCAR stickers and neoprene sling with bullet loops and a cartoon deer embossed on them ?)

With both Martini's, the price was a little more reasonable because the stocks were in poor condition, shortened in one case and lengthened in the other so new stocks were in order. I am not (generally) in favour of adding things to these old rifles that detracts from the ability to return them to the way they were as issued so tang sights are not appropriate. A little thought on the ways around that had a light sheet al pattern made that would allow the use of the trigger and the main anchor pins if I replaced them with longer bolts. A scrap of 3 x 1 1/2 box steel
had a suitable piece of steel and away we went

The cheap set of burrs I had were rubbish and one looked like a candidate for the aperture

By making the bolt head into a machine screw head I had a more standard look to the off side of the action

When it cam to the 577-450 I thought to add a little more to the shapeliness of the look

I was able to set things so that at the lowest setting it was just a little low for my general purpose plinking load and be right on for a 100yd hunting load for the 303 and for the 577-450 the one setting was all I needed so it is set and forget with this being a 50yd group for the 577-450 and with the balloon head 24 guage shot shell brass I made the cases from is a good load for play and would have no trouble on a decent stag to 150 yds.I sit the underside of the black on the top of the front sight

The same theory held true for the Lee Enfield actions and the lobbing sight recess and anchor points seemed a good place to start. First the recess needed filled

I did reshape the top of the wrist socket (mine on the right with an unshaped one on the left) to get the slim Lee Speed style to the stock

A bolt head made an usefull aperture

Thank you for responding in such detail. Nice work and very practical.

Love the topic! Great job getting those lovely vintage guns into proper service!

My hunting duo for plains game in Zim are single shot Dakota model 10s in 7x57 and .300 H&H.

If I ever do big 5 plus plains game I'll make it a .375 H&H magazine rifle and the 7x57 for plains game.

Otherwise, perhaps a .470 double (plus 20 gauge barrels) and again the 7x57.

Great duos are fun to see and I love hearing about all of yours on here.

We're about to do a 458wm build at work, and that will pair nicely with my Lee Enfield sporter. I'd like to upgrade the Lee to a Speed and the 458 to a 450-400 double, but those are both down the road a way.

What is your preferred rifle brand?

My 2 rifle battery:
1) 7x57mm Mauser Churchill Gunmakers Model Deluxe
2) .600 Nitro Express R.B Rodda & Co. scalloped boxlock ejector (made in Germany for Suhler Waffen Export Haus pre-1912)

IMG_1732.jpeg

Was forced to sell the .600 Nitro Express, because it featured undersized bores which would make it impossible for me to run modern conventional .620 caliber bullets through them without swaging the bullets down to size.

But I still dream of owning another .600 Nitro Express someday. Preferably a Holland & Holland Royal sidelock ejector.
