Ive been reading this forum frequently, and enjoyed and utilized the information from it. I’ve been prepping for safari what seems like my whole adult life. It got a little more serious a while back when I purchased a used Krieghoff Classic with 500/416 and 9.3x74R barrels. Even though the purchase was a bit impulsive and ignorant I am very pleased with the rifle. I tackled the 500/416 first. The ammo it was factory regulated with is unobtainable in any way; loaded ammunition or components. I got what I could find: once fired Hornady brass from Krieghoff; 400gr DGX and TSX bullets, and H1000 (what I read from this site) and got started. After about 30 rounds I have settled on a couple loads, and will remit here for reference for anyone else with this gun and interested.
1) Federal Large Magnum Match Primers; Hornady brass; 96Gr H1000; 400Gr Barnes TSX - ~2300FPS
Im sure at least 1/2 of the dispersion is due to my poor bench competency with this monster.
2) Federal Large Rifle Magnum Match Primers; Hornady Brass; 105Gr H1000; 400Gr DGX ~2300FPS - this load had slightly more dispersion, but regulated similarly.
3) Federal Large Rifle Magnum Match Primers; Hornady Brass; 35Gr Accurate 5744; 400Gr DGX ~1350FPS - this load regulates well, and hits about 6-7” low at 50yds.
These three loads satisfy my OCDs, so I loaded up a 60 of the TSXs (as I prefer those bullets over the DGX), and 30 plinker/hog rounds with the 5744 and DGXs. Im sure they can be better (maybe they are better than Im shooting). I found the cartridge and the gun very predictable and easy to load for. Shooting from the bench is a different story.
Now on to the 9.3 X 74R - I was able to get some Swift 285Grs bullets!
Thanks for listening this place has about all the people on the planet that would find this interesting, and understand my satisfaction!!!!
