    How safe are safteys?

Never put absolute trust in any safety. Years ago I was practicing cycling a Model 70 I was planning to take to Africa. I was at home using snap caps. I flipped off the three position safety and I heard the firing pin drop. Scariest snap I ever heard. I tried it numerous times and about once...

    New classic British shotgun acquisition

I just received a call from Mr. Perodeau, the gunsmith recommended by Red Leg. He informed me that the gun is in great shape and should be perfectly safe to shoot. The minimum barrel wall thickness measurements were .028 and .029. The chokes were .010 and .020 which should be Improved Cylinder...

    New classic British shotgun acquisition

Thanks. Mine is a more basic working gun compared to the gorgeous gun you purchased. Mine was 2 1/2 inch (63mm) but was converted to 2 3/4 (70 mm). It is currently in the hands of the gunsmith recommended by Redleg. As part of his inspection I’ve asked him to evaluate the chamber work to confirm...

Red Leg: Thanks for taking time to give me the detailed advice. I will definitely follow your advice and have your guy in OK give it a thorough inspection. Whatever he discovers I’ll still be happy to have it in my collection but it would be nice to get to fire a few shells through it.

    Ideal Rifle for Dual Use

.375 Ruger may be great in Alaska but if you go to Africa and your ammo doesn’t arrive with you (it happens) you may be SOL if you try to find .375 Ruger. .375 H&H will be found almost anywhere hunting ammo is sold in Africa.

    Rifles you will NEVER sell

I have several I would be unlikely to sell unless I had a terminal illness and was saving my wife the trouble of selling them, 1. Winchester Super Grade in .375 H&H 2. Winchester Featherweight in .270 3. Krieghoff .470 double The one I would never sell is a Remington 550 in .22 that my father...

Your favorite hunting rifle of all time

My Winchester Model 70 featherweight in .270. My Winchester Model 70 Super grade in .375 H&H. My Krieghoff .470 Nitro double. I’ve not yet hunted with it but it is quite accurate so it should serve me well. I’ve spent a lot of range time with it so I should be comfortable with it when the time...

    .450/400 NE, .404 Jeffery, .416 Rigby/Remington

The .416 Ruger is probably a great buy and should certainly do a good job on any African game. My biggest concern is traveling to and within Africa with a rather uncommon caliber. If your ammo gets lost in route (sadly not an uncommon occurrence) you can buy replacement ammo in most cities if...

Muzzle Brake on a Big Bore

I vote a strong no. You will get used to shooting a .375. I shoot .458 Lott and .470 from the bench now with no problems and I’m in my 60s. In the field you will never notice the recoil. Unless you have a medical issue like a detached retina don’t risk lifetime tinnitus by using a brake. I wake...

First Timer African Safari Common Mistakes To Avoid

Don’t overpack your bags. This goes for your wife too. SAA is very strict about weight, especially travel in Africa, and the check-in agent may take a dislike to you so don’t expect any passes on the weight. Think about how to deal with it like wearing your boots (A good idea anyway so they...

    Any book recommendations

Months Of the Sun by Ian Nyschens is great even though he was a poacher. Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter is also excellent. Both of these give you a good idea of what Africa used to be. I enjoy Capstick’s books as entertainment but, of course, a grain of salt is handy. Safari Press has enough...

I was measured for a pair of Russell’s at DSC. when they arrived they were so small I could not even get my foot into them. I then bought a pair of Courteney Selous boots. Top African animal to shoot

Every hunter has his own perfectly valid reasons for preferring one particular game animal. For me, it is Buffalo. Being in thick bush, hearing them step on twigs before you can actually see them, finally seeing dark shapes so close to you, then trying to get a decent look at them before they...

    Cz 550 Roulette

I have two. The one in .458 Lott that I paid $1000 for at a local gun shop feeds every round perfectly and is very accurate. The one in .404 Jeffery that I ordered from the CZ Custom Shop and for which I paid nearly $5K is beautiful and very accurate but has problems feeding rounds from the...

416 Rem Mag vs 404 Jeffrey

I have them both and love them both. My .404 is more accurate so that is the one I’ve taken to Africa. It performed beautifully on buffalo. On the downside my .404 is from the CZ custom shop and has the well known problem of difficulty feeding rounds from the left side of the magazine that even...

    Swarovski z6 Or Zeiss victory

Can’t go wrong with either but I’m partial to Swarovski. I have several and love them. A few years ago I tried a comparison test with 2 Swarovski scopes and two lesser brands. Recoil: 404 Jeffery vs. 375 H&H and 416 Rigby

I have rifles in .375 H&H, .404 Jeffery and .416 Remington. The recoil of the.404 is a bit stronger than the .375 and the .416 is only a little bit more than the .404. None are too uncomfortable to shoot. You only notice recoil at the range anyway. I’ve never noticed the recoil of any rifle in...

    .58 caliber Springfield rifle

This one was made in 1861, near the start of the war. It is the main rifle issued to Union troops although the Confederates picked them up by the thousands off battlefields. Springfield made about 265,000 so they are fairly affordable. In order to keep up with demand about 20 other arms...
