I’ve found the Courtney’s to be a bit heavy for my preferences. I went with a barefoot style Merrell with the Boyt gaiters for my buffalo hunt and I thought they worked quite well. Occasionally had to pull some sikkelbos out of the bottoms, but nothing terribly painful or more than a slight...
As I typically travel with archery equipment I was thinking of upgrading to the Sitka Nomad. Hopefully I'd be able to avoid the police station with the bow cases.
Iron will buff SB would be my first choice. Having said that I’d look into the tuffhead DG and the Valkyrie as well.
Where are you headed that you can get a license for archery hippo?
I personally wouldn’t use a mechanical on anything larger than a medium antelope. My experiences have left me less than impressed.
That being said Josh Bowmar posted on instagram that he has taken Cape buffalo with his new 2” mechanical on a sub 600 grain arrow. If that works on buffalo I...
The kick in the pants is that we knew what we were after with this hunt. Large reserve with wild managed animals and no commute. It was communicated that we'd be hunting from pop-ups on the reserve and we were all fine with that, because of the property. You lose a significant amount of...
Aside from the last couple of paragraphs I try to give an accounting of events without incorporating too much of my thoughts/feelings.
By now the quota issues for the hunts Kwalata was advertising on their new reserve are old news on the forum. I did reach out to Jaco after this came to my...
Personally I like to tailor my broadheads to the game I’m pursuing. Having multiple options in my quiver. For example this year:
Method archery VBS and Slick Trick SS3s for larger thicker game. Zebra wildebeest etc.
Sevr and Megameats for Impala and smaller
I also have my buffalo/giraffe setup...
EC will be smaller, my biggest was 43 inches. Body size is smaller as well. They are an excellent hunt, but you just need to adjust your trophy expectations.
I have attached my biggest EC and SG Kudu for comparison. 43” Vs 52” IIRC
After my switch from a 6 inch stabilizer to the 11* inch CBE I didn’t really notice much difference in my shooting from either an accuracy or precision standpoint. What I did notice made a massive difference was switching from a standard index finger style release to a thumb button. Another...
I shoot a 10 inch CBE stabilizer. Since I primarily hunt from a blind for whitetails it’s the best option for me. I’m about your size too, but short arms and legs
I think @rookhawk has posted his son’s setup somewhere on the form and IIRC it’s pretty similar.
However, if I were build an arrow for her I’d look for a .204 shaft @ 7 gpi +\- then tip it with an ethics outsert system of ~200 grains and 150 grain 2 blade single bevel heads. You can flip flop...
I used a similar setup back in 2018 and had excellent performance. I shot a wildebeest as well. My arrow buried itself in the far shoulder. All other animals had pass throughs.
I have never been a big fan of Montecs though.
My PG setup this year is my Bowtech Solution with Vector HMRs, ~650...
Wildebeest, steenbuck, bushbuck, and baboon top my list of animals that tend to get shadowed by the sexier animals like kudu and impala.
IMO the best way to approach hunting in Africa is to have 1-2 target species and be willing to take exceptional trophies provided by the bush. Exceptional...
Can’t say just kudu. I’d say the floor for Southern Greater Kudu these days is 2500, with 3500-4000 being a reasonable expectation. The AH sponsor I’m hunting with in September is charging 3250. The place I hunted last year was 3650, but they have since transitioned to a scaled price.
The business model that the outfitter has adopted is going to influence their trophy fees.
Do they own their areas or lease? Do they only hunt self sustaining populations or do they stock from the game auctions? Do they feed their animals or do the animals rely only on what the bush provides...
I've taken multiples of both. I've never found impala very difficult to hunt, the exception may be if you are looking for a 25+ ram. I've always found the blesbuck to be a trickier animal to harvest.
That being said, I concur with the consensus that taking both is the best option. Blesbuck make...
Even blacked out the baboons will see you. I’ve tried several different things from camo to black. They all work. The most important thing is your in blind behavior. Move slow, stay back from the windows, etc.
Broadhead looked brand new still when it came out. Used a 300 grain VPA on a springbuck. That broadhead didn’t survive contact with the ground after passing through.
I tipped a set of the Vector Custom Shop (now Method Archery) HMRs with the Iron Wills. I have some pics in my hunt report.
I think you sort of make my point in the second paragraph. Everyone always jumps to saying “heavier arrow” and “more FOC”. I’m not at all saying that these aren’t important, but they are merely a piece of the puzzle.
It just seems as if people won’t think twice about taking a 450g total weight arrow with a standard broadhead and sending it at an elk 50 yards away, but we start talking about African game and all the sudden we need to fully redo our setup to hunt impalas and thinner game like kudu at 20 yards...
My persoal opinion is that arrow weight and choice is overrated. I have had excellent success with CX piledrivers and slick truck magnums. As well as 830 grain combos of vector HMRs and iron will 250s. On the flip side the other guy is camp had impeccable performance from his whitetail setup...
I was impressed with the tooth of the arrow last trip. I’m looking at the heads that vector custom shop makes or the SlickTrick solid head.
I’m not ready to invest in Iron wills for plains game yet
I don’t think you will see significant improvements in penetration by chasing 20% FOC with the animals you are chasing. A well constructed solid broadhead on a 615g arrow will most likely be a complete pass through
Yup. I did the 2 sights last trip. I’ll bring both for the solution again, but given the weight of the arrows I’ll probably get a single pin sight with different tapes for each arrow to go on the X80
I was shooting a bowtech solution drawing 72lbs. I’m planning to grab a revolt X80 when the bow shop gets the 2023 models in and discounts the 2022s. So taking 2 different bows will keep any issues with trajectory to a minimum
I haven’t used it on other game. I do plan to use iron wills or the VBS from vector in 100gn or 125gn when I’m hunting with Kwalata in September. My plains game arrows will be about 500gn total weight.
My buffalo arrows were about 830gn, but I’m going to build some that go about 1050gn for that...
I put an Iron Will single bevel 250gn through a Cape Buffalo and it is immaculate. The 300gn VPA had noticeable damage with plains game, but nothing critical. With the exception of one that hit a rock
I think this chart is terrible. A setup that can handle a sable could easily handle a lion, but more applicable would be that the same setup that does well with an impala will likely do well with kudu. However, the same setup that does well for kudu may not be optimal for a zebra.
Each animal...
