Y'all are missing the bigger picture: rhinos move to extinction

Probably 90% of the world's Rhinos are on private land in South Africa. There is still a brisk profitable trade in rhino horn but it involves poachers who slip into these properties and kill rhinos to sell the on the black market. Land owners with rhinos must bear the full cost of the anti...

    The Perfect 9.3x62 Safari Rifle

I have a Steyr SM12 and it’s an incredible rifle. Mine had the wood stock and fiber optic iron sights. It’s has Talley QD Bases and rings and shoots bullet weights from 180 to 286 grains to the same point of impact. It is very close to perfect from my point of view. I also have a CZ 550 with...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

I would go with my Ruger Number One in 450/400 or my M70 in 416 Remington. Both work on anything.

Perfect bolt action dangerous game rifle.

Finally, my Heym 89b, 577 NE

Absolutely beautiful rifle. I dream of one like it in 470 or 500. But if you can handle it, the 577 has no peers. There is no better stopping rifle.

Wanted A Nice .458 Lott (Or .416 Rigby, Rigby) For First African Safari Hunt This July. Thanks!

I have a Brno ZKK 602. Rifle is in nearly new condition. Has classic style french walnut stock. It was chambered in 458 Win Mag but has been made to handle 458 Lott. Action has been smoothly and polished to feed perfectly. Have a little ammo as well. Have to check on exactly what. I would...

    CRF vs Push feed

Phil Shoemaker used a Remington 700 type rifle during the Vietnam war. When guiding clients for brown bear, he uses controlled round feed rifles. There is a difference in sniping at long range where accuracy is everything and dangerous game at point blank range where reliability is indeed...

    Remington hyper velocity

I have not used the Remington 140 but I have used high velocity loads from hornady as well as 270 wsm and 270 weatherby loads. A little extra velocity will work fine in my experience.

Fresh From Germany: Mauser M98 125th Anniversary Cased Rifle in 8x57

Perfect for plains game and North America.
  16. R

Any point in a 'small' double rifle?

A 9.3 x74R would be a great do everything double. For just North America, a double in 7x65 R or 8mm JRS does about anything. You could use iron sights or a red dot for close range. Or an optic sighted in for the right barrel for longer shots.

How many .375 H&H's and/or .416's do you own and shoot?

One 375 Whitworth Mauser One 375 Model 70 Alaskan One 416 Model 70 Safari Express Also have one Brno ZKK 602 in 458 Had a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby but sold it for a reason that escapes me at present.

Winchester Safari Express In 416 Remington With Schmidt & Bender For Sale

Glad someone snapped it up. I really like mine. So far mine has been shot at game three times and each time resulted in a very quick one shot kill. I think it’s probably one of the very best choices for dangerous game for a client. It also works great on plains game as well.

I have one. It’s mounted on a M70 Alaskan in 375 H&H. I have the illuminated number 4 reticle. I have shot maybe 50 rounds through this rig. Optics are super clear, tracks well and holds zero. 1.7 power is low enough to keep both eyes open. 10 power is great for longer shots. My friend...

Like New Chapuis Elan Classic 470 NE

I purchased my 470 from Rare Breed. He had already worked up handloads and installed weight in the butt stock to bring the over all weight to 11 pounds. It is more comforable to shoot than my M70 in 375 H&H. A Heym in 450/400 would be a wonderful double rifle but the Chapuis in 450/400 or...

A 470 with proper handloads will recoil no more than a 450/400 with factory ammo. This really makes an amazing difference.

Project Goal: Ruger No1 in 460WBY for Speer AGS Tungsten Solids

I think there was a 30 caliber mauser cartridge but it was built on a .311 bullet like the 303 british. 7.65 Argentine Mauser? But your rifle uses the more available .308 bullets and 8x57 brass so it’s a much better modern wildcat.

Project Goal: Ruger No1 in 460WBY for Speer AGS Tungsten Solids

7.62x57 That has to be the finest example of Rifle Looney that I’ve seen. You have managed to fill the gap between 308 and 30-06 with a cartridge that fills the gap between 7x57 and 8x57. Actually a perfectly useful, unique cartridge but it seems like a lot of effort to build and use. But...

Hornady CX Bullets in .375 cal???

Someone on this site did use it on buffalo and posted pictures of recovered bullets. They were pretty flattened out and not very confidence inspiring. The CX is just a new version of the GMX with some changes to make it more aerodynamic.

    .375 H&H 300 grain Nosler Partition vs Swift A-Frames

The information about the current design of partitions came through John Barsness. It’s possible to test this for yourself if you want to compare using dry news print which is very tough on bullets. I did this with my 9.3x62 last year. John has written extensively about the testing. I can’t...

Going to Africa looking for a Winchester 416

300 grain 375s and 400 grain 416s are the way to go with lead core bullets. In Monolythic bullets the 270 grain 375 and 350 grain 416 are as light as I would go on dangerous game. Mass still counts because the momentum of a bullet is a function of mass and velocity and momentum is critical...

The 17 shot adventure did not take place with Tinie Kok, not sure how anyone came away with that conclusion. My neighbor hunted with Tinie’s outfit this September. It was his second hunt with them. He holds them in the highest regard. On the first hunt he killed a bull elephant with a single...

Going to Africa looking for a Winchester 416

I do not think the 416 shoots magic bullets but 400 grain bullets of 40-42 caliber do have a great reputation. I am of course envious of any man with a good 404 and the ammo, bullets and brass to keep it going. I also have a 450/400 that fits into the same category. I am thinking my next...

Going to Africa looking for a Winchester 416

By the way the PH who purchased the M70 in 416 for his clients to use on buffalo is Mr, Tinie Kok of Mbalabala safaris in Zimbabwe. This information came from my neighbor who hunted with him in September. He did this after years of proving a 375 as a loaner gun.

Mr. Red Leg, the man who fired 17 times at the Buffalo was in camp with me. The shooting took place over the course of a day. Once the bull was wounded, he was tracked and fired at on several occasions. Recovery of this buffalo ultimately required the use of a helicopter. All of this...

On the other hand, I have had more than one PH tell me that a 416 is a more decisive killer on buffalo provided you shoot it well. This summer I kilied my first bull with my M70 in 416, he ran a very short distance and fell over dead. My friend Joe shot two bulls with his 416. All of these...

Project Goal: Ruger No1 in 460WBY for Speer AGS Tungsten Solids

The largest cartridge(physically) chambered by Ruger in the Number One is the 450/400 nitro. A few were chambered in the similar 450. nitro. There is a reason for this, anything larger than the 450/400 or the 458 lott requires removal of a lot of metal from the action as well as the chamber...
