    Preferred Shot Placement

I will most often aim half way between spot #1 and #3 on your picture when an animal is broadside - that way I have the greatest margin of error. For critters in the thick stuff that I don't want to track, I try and get as close as I can and then go for spot #3 to break them down so they don't...

Hunting Accommodation - Luxury or Basic?

I have not been to Africa to hunt (been there on business - though). When I am able to book my first safari, I will look for an outfitter that uses basic camps - wall tents, field shower, fire or camp stove/oven, cooking part of what was just havested and good company. I guess that 20+ years...

Proper Meat Preparation - The First Hour

Browningbbr, My grandfather also taught me that the "first hour" is very important. However, instead of shrouding and hanging the meat for 24 hours, he believed in quartering the animal and placing the quarters in ice chests full of ice. He would leave the meat in the ice and water for 3-4...

Is the .338 Federal OK for plains game?

My 7m Rem Mag (off the shelf Remington 700 ADL) will cloverleaf three shots at 100yds with the 150 grain Fusion round (from a bench rest). That is the load I use on deer and hogs. Being a bonded bullet, you may just want to go with that one, since your rifle likes it. JMHO .... ;)

Is the .338 Federal OK for plains game?

From what I have read (no personal experience with this caliber), I think the bullet that really makes the 338 Federal shine is the 210 gr partition - but that is just me ...... .338 Federal Rifle Cartridge Federal Premium - Rifle Details

    350 grains in 458 lott

Ibex, I shoot a 45-70 a lot (also .458 caliber) with 325gr bullets at around 1900 fps. I have yet to find an animal in the U.S. where that bullet stays in the animal. I also shoot a 430gr hard cast lead bullet (non-expanding) at around 1800 fps that is quite unstoppable on medium to large...

    Hunting "Deals" in Africa

I still believe in the old saying "you get what you pay for".... quality is never cheep. Total cost to you may fluctuate slightly depending on the current market, but for quality items (scopes, rifles, trips, hunts, etc.) that fluctuation will be minimul. Just my opinion ....

    Rifle Weight

For what it's worth .... for me, the only time I would worry about rifle weight is if I were going to do some hunting in extreme environments - like mountian goat hunting above the tree line, Bongo hunting in the thick jess of CAR, etc. I generally hunt on public land, which means I have to...

    Which .416 and why?

DOJ, I do like the 416 Taylor and the 404 Jeff - if I were to find a great deal on one of these before I got my Ruger (a year or two away from that) it would be awfully hard not to snatch it up .... Thanks :)

    Which .416 and why?

Ray, Right now a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan in .416 Ruger is at the top of my list. Hard to knock the quality of the Hawkeye or the price and availability of the ammo (at least in the U.S.). The package I am looking at would get me a rifle, QD scope mounts, low power scope and 200 rounds of ammo...

    Which .416 and why?

The .416 Taylor I believe is a .458 Win Mag necked down to .416 - I have been keeping the option open of getting a tired 458 win and rebarreling to 416 Taylor - just not sure how available ammo would be in Africa - must plan the logistics better if I go with a caliber that is not so common...

I have nothing against the .458 Win or Lott. I am just partial to the 416s or 404 Jeff - nostalgia I guess. :)
  45. BangFlop

    Which .416 and why?

I think the .404 Jeffery is really my first choice - I do have a soft spot for things that are the stuff of legend - just don't know if my resources will allow me to purchase a rifle configured for it. One additional question, if I may - which of the 416s or 404 has the most ready supply of...

    Best off-the-shelf rifle cartridge.

Federal Fusion - 150gr for deer and hogs, 175 gr for black bear, elk and moose. It uses a bonded bullet and is the most accurate factory load in my Rem 700 7mm rem mag. That's what works for me ....

    Which .416 and why?

I am in the process of collecting the necessary resources and equipment for my first African hunting experience (1st of many I hope). After much thought, I believe for a dangerous game rifle, I will skip the 375 and go for a 416 (don't have the money for a double - will stick to bolt action)...
