The late Gerry Blair called in & shot many with a .22-250... BUT his AO was AZ & many cats didn't go over 100 lbs. I would personally error on the side of more engine/heavier bullet.
Our deer hunting group has been doing it for decades. Some of the "elders" that are gone now, bought industrial processing equipment that is still in use today. We can usually process all of our deer (usually 20-25) in one Sunday morning. We typically grill up tenderloins & some of the guys...
I have a Savage striker in .308, I started with light H4895 loads & went up...but not much. It's been years since I played with it, have to look up the actual data. Shot a lot of cheap Hornady 150 fmjs.
Started out at age 8-10 at the local Boy's Club/Jaycees air rifle team. Did a little bit of shooting in the Army. Later in life, did a little local pistol shooting (IDPA & "zombie" shoots). Became an NRA certified pistol instructor about a dozen years ago.
I've been selling Leupolds for over 20 years (own more than a few myself). I have had to send one back for a clarity problem (it was actually an owner abuse/stupidity issue, not a scope quality issue). I had my 7/08 with a VXII 3-9 fall off the back of a 4-wheeler at speed. I was amazed that...
Growing up I had a neighbor across the road that was a "big game" hunter (i.e. the only person in the neighborhood that had more than a whitetail or two on the wall). Ronnie had an old school glass faced gun cabinet with a couple of shotguns, a few .22s, an unused model 94 in .30-30 and the...
Congrats! Before the covid-craziness I was looking at booking a black bear hunt in Canada, now that they're open for business again, I make book for 2024.
A few years after the manbun came out, I bought a barrel for one of my Savages. It's soft shooting and clangs my gongs well but, I think I'll stick with my .308 or 06' for general hunting use.
I've killed a truckload of raccoons with a .22 Mag (I have chickens, so they come near the coop all the time). The coons were so thick for a while I even took the mag squirrel hunting in case I ran into one.
I find the mag a little more effective for longer shots in the river bottom behind...
Nice! Sounds like an awesome rig...I actually buy the cheekpad/shellholders from amazon or ebay (I probably have 8-10 of them variety of manufacturers). They hold up fairly well for being dirt cheap.
This is the last one I bought for my Tikka .30/06...
I live in IA & up until a few years ago we were straightwall (now we can use bottlenecks .35+). I ran the .357 Max in a 14" T/C Contender pistol for several years. When we were finally allowed to use pistol cartridge rifles, I ordered a 24" MGM barrel in .357 Max for my Encore rifle. The...
I have considered that in a Whelen since I have a pile of '06 brass but will probably use a spare Tikka SS action that isn't seeing much use. I still have an itch for a Sauer 9.3x62 which will probably come before the Whelen project. Having cataract surgery in a few weeks so new toy funds...
I put this one together for IA whitetails a couple of years ago. Still haven't taken a deer with it yet (Covid in 21, flu in 22). But it's clanged my gongs a bit! Savage model 16 that I've had for some time, it started out as a 7mm-08 but I believe there are 4-5 other barrels floating around...
Yes sir, the cartridge is new to me, the great state of Iowa is finally allowing bottleneck cartridges for deer season but the have to be .350 or larger. I screwed a Shaw barrel onto a Savage 16 that I've had for years. Have done lots of load testing this fall but the components shortage isn't...
I was looking for similar data for my .358 Win. I have a surplus of 760 but none of my books listed anything, ended up settling on H4895 for now until TAC becomes available.
L-R: 1947 BSA No5 MkI, 1943 Long Branch No4 MkI (bubba'd) & 1944 Lithgow No1 MkIII.
The jungle carbine was my 1st centerfire rifle, it was given to me by an uncle 37-38 years ago. He recently passed away, I'll never part with it.
from NE IA, I've been a lurker for sometime, figured I would join up. An old squirrel hunter, I go by Tree-ratsniper on 1/2 a dozen other forums. Mostly a midwest whitetail & predator hunter but I've dreamt of Africa since I was a child. Still plan on getting there with my .375 someday, cape...
