Ha ha I’m thinking some where in between like the 7mm08 is a better cartridge then either the 243 or 308. It has more energy than the 243 and better SD and BC with the same weight bullet than the 308.
Something to think about……
I had a 5.6 x 57 in my Mauser 66. It’s a great performer but a tricky one to reload. The necks get very thick and need to be turned and thinned down to avoid high chamber pressures. I know from experience as my rifle blew up and destroyed the rifle . Knowing the problem now I still wouldn’t go...
Regarding riflescopes I use the Z6i 1.7-10 x 42. It’s compact, brilliant optically and all the power I need. I have a Blaser 2.8-20 on my 300 Wea barrel but it is to big for such a dainty rifle.
Hello there
I’ve had mine for close on 30 years. During which time I have collected 6 barrels. I had a 5.5x50 mag but here in Australia cases are only available from RWS. They cost or they did around $5 each if you can get them. Didn’t see the point with putting up with this so I had it...
Hello HWL
I also am a great fan of the 9.3x64 Breneke . My first rifle was a Mauser 66 which I had 30 yrs ago and now I own a R8 in the same caliber. It has always worked for me and never let me down.
I am also a big fan of the 8x68s, hunted all my Alaskan animals with it. If I had only one...
I have a old mate here in Australia who was a PH here in the top end. He had two rifles he used a 375 H&H along with a 458 win mag. He much prefer the 375 and said it killed our Asian Buffalo which are considerably larger then the cape better than the 458. Nearly all animals were shot with the...
They’re a great scope bob. Best value for money you can buy. I saw a new 3 to15 and told Nick to buy one for the test firearm reviews. Most of the time they send a new rifle with a crap scope on it.
I use the Swaro Z6i 1.7 to 10 x42 on most of my rifles and find it’s magnification never wanting. It is compact in size, has I fine illuminated retical with superb clarity. There not cheap but you have it for life and with its versatility you can put it on any rifle.
Yes the 340 Wea is a great cartridge. I have used one for over 30 years and a great fan just like our lost old mate Bruce from Western Australia. He too also favored the 9.3 x64 Breneke.
Yes so it’s the load not the cartridge. If you remember old Len Richardson, probably one of the best Sambar hunters of all time . His favorite caliber of choice was the 6 mm. Before he discovered it he used a 222 Rem . Nick Harvey shot quite a few Buffalo with his 6 mm Rem, worked perfectly...
Hi Bob
I know how much you love the 6 mm but I have used one on and off for over 40 yrs and my wife now, I carn’t ever recall tracking a wounded animal ever. All game up to Reds can be taken with the 6mm. Use the right bullet for the game intended and shoot straight like any cartridge and you...
There you go, I have only had brilliant results with the Oryx in 9.3 and 375 cal. This bullet penetrated 5’ of muscle and spine, in a perfect straight line and weighed 88% of original weight.
You can pick on a lot of cup and core bullets for lack of penetration and poor weight retention but not the Remington core lock. It’s been consistently killing big game for a long long time.
Totally agreed with you if you keep your shots under 300 yds , we all should try and do this
Well I guess the 340 Wea is to the 300 Wea what the 375 is to it. All I know is it’s a superb round for the person who wants one rifle to hunt around the world.
I hunt with the R8 pro in the standard 17 mm barrel profile. It has a left handed bolt and one of my favorite rifles to use. With a swaro Z6i 1.7 to 10 and saddle mount it tips the scale at 8.5 lbs. In calibers like the 340 Weatherby or my 9.3x64 which weighs 8lb , I wouldn’t want them any...
Bigger caliber’s can be and are just as accurate as smaller ones, only most people carn’t handle or shoot then as accurately as the smaller one . This maybe why PH’s always have a 375 or 30-06 caliber in camp.
Another caliber that I have and is an excellent all round cartridge for any game , anywhere, is the 340 Weatherby. Shoots as flat as the 7 mm mag and hits as hard as the 375 mag.
Personally I would not worry to much on what the PH recommends. There’s been far more buff shot with the 375 or 9.3 x 62 for that matter than any 416, and they are far more versatile. A bigger caliber is no substitute for shot placement.
Yes the 270 was one of the calibers I wrote up in the March sporting shooter. They all work brilliantly. If your after meat, put the bullet through the rip cage and not the shoulder as the damage when hitting heavy bone is massive.
I have two Blasers which I hunt with. A K95 single shot with 6 barrels and the R8 with 4. I don’t see a problem with changing the bolt face when swapping barrels. It takes less then a minute and you don’t need any tools. I also opened the barrel channel up to take the 19 mm barrel, which leaves...
A animal is never going to know the difference between the H&H or the Weatherby. A hundred or two hundred fps is irrelevant in killing power. Some people use the 280 Rem while others prefer the 280 AI it’s all a personal preference. I think the improved version is a sexier looking round and if...
He tells me that he much prefers to use the 375 h&h on Buffalo then his 458 Win. Still after shooting over 160 Buff with the H&H he thinks the 375 Wea is a much better option.
Yes Bob
Nick loves his 375 Weatherby. I have shot it a number of times and it was such a pleasant thing to shoot. May have been the wood grained synthetic stock it wore but it kicked less than some 300’s I have shot. Nick still talks about it as the perfect long range big game caliber rifle he...
