SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Kuche Safaris?

Hi, I’m asking for a friend who won a donated hunt with this outfitter recently. I have hunted in the Limpopo area before, but I was not familiar with them. Any, and all information will be helpful and greatly appreciated. Many thanks! Cheers, Beech McConnell

    New "classic" .318 Westley Richards?

Yes, it is a 1909 Argentine action. Satterlee Arms redid the bolt handle in the classic Oberndorf tear drop shape. I am excited to get it finished and ready to go.

    New "classic" .318 Westley Richards?

Thank you, sir!! Being a fan of the classic rifles I’ve tried to duplicate the original stock lines and patterns in the rifles I’ve built.

10 days buffalo and plain games with 458Lott and 375HH - how many ammo of each?

If buffalo is the primary target carry the Lott, but keep the .375 in the cruiser just in case the kudu of a lifetime shows himself while driving around. Once the buff is in the salt go with the .375 I agree with IvW on ammo number. 20 rounds is plenty for buffalo and 40 is more than enough...

    New "classic" .318 Westley Richards?

The .318 WR has held a special place in my heart for a good while now. So much so, that I am currently in the process of building one on a vintage Mauser 98 receiver. Stuart Satterlee did the chambering of the Lothar barrel, feed work, etc., and I am currently finishing the stock myself. For...

Heading to the Save in August 2023

You will love hunting in the Save!! My buddy and I hunted Cape buffalo and plains game there this past August/early September with the Duckworth family at Mokore. Beautiful area and full of game. African hunting at its finest! Planning a return trip soon.

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

Apologies for the ads from Graf & Sons!! I didn’t realize I attached them to the thread.

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

I’ve attached a few pictures of the 9x57 I mentioned earlier in this thread. The stock was soaked in oil and cracked, so putting some new wood on it. I do most of the stock finishing myself, save the checkering, who I leave to the experts! Love these old warhorse Mausers!

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

Thank you. I’ve been a fan of the Oberndorf Mauser for many years. One of the best platforms for a custom rifle or, if in good original shape, a true joy to hunt with and carry afield!

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

Agreed. I always comply with their laws and don’t want to take any chances. That’s usually why when I hunt in Africa, I take a rifle in a caliber that is common even over there. Good chance you’ll find a box of 30-06, .375 H&H, .458 Win mag, or .470NE lying around most safari camps in case your...

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

I have been to Africa many times and hunted in several countries. I have yet to have someone check for proper head stamped brass. On my recent trip to Zim, they counted the number quickly and verified it matched the number on the permit. Not to say they won't check, I'm just saying it has not...

Thank you! I reload for almost every caliber I shoot. It is a fun hobby.

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

I know Buffalo Arms loads .356 bullets, both RN and Spitzers for it on proper head stamped brass. It would be a neat gun for medium/short range in heavy bush. Might add a low power scope in quick detachable mounts, just in case.
  23. D

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

I know Buffalo Arms loads some for the 9x57 when you can catch them in stock with 250 grain RN or Spitzers using proper headstamped cases.

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

Amen. I could not agree more. I just returned from Zimbabwe and carried a .470 double in the bush for several days. Like you said, hunting with the nostalgic calibers makes it all the more sweeter!

    9x57 Mauser for plains game?

I have an original 1912 Oberndorf Mauser chambered in 9x57 that I am restoring. If it is a good shooter, I am thinking it would be a good option for plains game. If not, possibly rebore to 9.3x62? Any advice or thoughts are welcome! Many thanks!

No, the .458 is a Model 70 and the .505 Gibbs is a Bauska.

ZIMBABWE: Dagga Boy In The Save Valley

I tried to get into position for a shot on a zebra but it didn’t happen. Used the .375 instead. I did take an old bull giraffe at about 85 yards with it. Turns out he had a badly damaged foot from a poachers snare. It is a Chapuis.470 NE. Go Tigers!

ZIMBABWE: Dagga Boy In The Save Valley

No, just hunting on this trip. I enjoy the quiet solitude of fly fishing on the small streams in NC not far from where I live.

    Chapuis .470 PH1

Agreed! I have always given elephants a very wide berth when encountered, especially the cows. We had a close call in Mozambique a few years back with a small herd of cows which I will not soon forget!
