COVID vaccination required by Safari Company or not, your suggestion

Not sure why it's an issue since you have to be fully vaccinated to get on a plane to get there.

    Scopes for safari rifles

I like the Z6 1X6 scopes. I have them on both of my go-to rifles, a .416 Rem., chose illuminated reticle, and the identical scope, sans illuminated, on a M70 .30-06. The illuminated has a small circle at the juncture of the crosshairs and just isn't as precise, at least on paper. But I like...

The soul of a poacher. Primarily. Why?

There are really two types of poaching: Commercial and subsistence. Ivory and rhino horn poaching is commercial by definition, but meat poaching has two subsets, commercial and subsistence. It's pretty hard to condemn a man for trying to feed his family, so as long as he's not using an AK-47...

5 Reasons Why You Need Medical Evacuation Coverage

You absolutely need it. If nothing else to give your widow someone local to sue if they screw up. Kinda joking. But I've done insurance coverage and bad faith litigation on the insurer side for around 35 years. If these companies mess up, they are hanging out there big time.

458 Win Mag. Short Barrel Chrono Results...

Never understood why you'd want to chop a barrel that short. Never had a problem with a longer barrel and you'll get more velocity.

Unicorn Bongo in Central African Republic

On a buffalo, I'd take a broken horn in a heartbeat if he was old. Not so on a bongo. Maybe on an antelope I have a lot of.

Most surprising/had to have animal on your first Safari

I agree that hunting eland is as tough as hunting roan and a lot like hunting buffalo if you track them. Frankly, I love hunting eland and they are the best eating antelope in my opinion.

    Half Moon Club Pictures

Been popped a few times, but only was cut once. In 2008 was checking zeros in the Selous. They did it stretched over the hood of the gharri, not great. First riifle, my .416, was spot on. Backup rifle, a .375 that was a bit short for me cut me on the first shot. It was about an inch off, so...

    Model 70 in 375 scope

I'm partial to the Z6 1-6, and I've got a Leupold 1.5-5 all with QD mounts for a backup.

    Hunter mistook for elk killed

For those speculating on the caliber, a .243 is ample to kill a man with one shot, but this was a muzzleloader. It bothered me when I hunted there that while muzzleloader hunters were required to wear orange, bow hunters were not. Makes sense because bowhunters need to get closer, but what...

    Murder

I guess you could carry a roll of quarters in your pocket, but that's hard on the knuckles, unless they'd let you put it in a sock.

    Hunter mistook for elk killed

I bow hunted elk in Colorado during muzzleloader season back in 2001 (during 9/11 in fact). We had a bull bugling and set up for him, with my partner behind me bugling and some cow calls. The bull answered. Looked like it was going well. Then I saw some orange through the brush. We were...

    Murder

Hey Doc, Can you not carry at least a knife in Australia? I carry either a switchblade or a Spyderco everywhere I go and a pistol or revolver when I feel the need. All perfectly legal in Texas.

    Recoil and Eye Damage

My father has macular degeneration and can no longer shoot big bores. I have my retinas checked on a regular basis because the only thing I can think of that would be worse than not being able to shoot my favorite rifles would be to be blind -- and not being able to shoot.

First Shot, Right Barrel or Left?

Grew up with a s x s shotgun. Agree with others that unless I needed a tighter choke, always shot right barrel first. Same with a double rifle. Unless they are loaded differently, softs vs. solids, I'll always shoot the right barrel first, left second. Seems to be what all the old hunters...

    What’s everyone using for Buffalo?

I've shot buffalo with Nosler Partitions, not my favorite, Woodleighs, TBBC's, and my favorite, Swift A Frames. All with a .416 Rem. They all died. Just got back from Tanzania with four on ticket. Swift A frames did fine when I did my part. Botched one.

Tanzania Research: Dream Hunt to be Realized

If you hunt cats, they will rule your hunt. But I love hunting cats. Michel Mantheakis is the cat man, he thinks like one. Sometimes I think I'd rather just hunt buffalo. It's a lot less work.

TANZANIA: Has Anyone Hunted With Michel Mantheakis Safaris?

I just got back from my sixth trip with Michel's company. Dating back to Miombo. You won't go wrong hunting with him. On my last trip, I was reintroduced to trackers I hunted with in 2008 and 2013, which was great. His areas are great, I've hunted in his Masailand areas and in Lukwati...

Distance of first shot on the big 5 or dangerous 7?

I've never hunted leopard at night or hunted where that was legal. And I've passed shots when it was just too dark. I've done it closer, but think you are better off getting the leopard to come to the bait with a little more distance. A hundred yards off of a steady rest is a pretty easy shot...

    Intentionally Wounding Big Game Animals

I disagree that it was intentionally wounding an animal. The shot was always lethal and only resulted in a short trail. Difference between a shoulder shot and a lung shot. Never took a questionable shot too far back. Some might take a similar shot to avoid breaking bones and ruining meat...

    Intentionally Wounding Big Game Animals

I would never intentionally wound an animal, but when I was a teenager, I used to make an ethical shot that would result in the animal not dropping to the shot so I could practice following them up. Sorry, but I got good at it and never took a shot that caused the animal to suffer, at least not...

    Peter Capstick...who knows the truth?

Don't know why this topic continues to persist. First time I heard about it was from a PH in Namibia in 2004. I think his problem was he was a real bad-ass in the wars, he truly was, but Capstick had a bigger name. I got hooked on Africa long before Capstick ever authored a book, but I've...

Distance of first shot on the big 5 or dangerous 7?

Take what Diana gives you, but in general, closer is better. I do agree that elephant needs to be close, and buffalo ideally. I disagree on leopard. If you shoot well, and the terrain cooperates, I think around 100 yards between the bait and the blind is ideal.

Dangerous Game Follow Up - Client and Professional Hunter roles?

Biggest "fight" I ever had with a PH was when he said I wasn't going on a follow up. Rather long shot on a buffalo in Masailand, steep downhill angle. Not a problem, my only concern was the steep angle. The bull ran down into the drainage, the rest of the small herd ran over the ridge, so my...

Why is Tanzania so expensive to hunt and is it worth it?

Tanzania is expensive, but depending upon your interests, it can be a real bargain. Always hunt with a reputable and great outfitter. Now I dearly love hunting buffalo and the multiple buffalo available in Tanzania is attractive to me. I also can't be away from my practice for a month, so I...
