Am I being scammed? Import into Toronto

It’s all a scam right now. Just got hit for $5,000+ USD for importing a blackbuck, buff skull and stag from Argentina. The stag and blackbuck having their skulls split to ensure the smallest crate possible.

African Trophy Export real time follow along

They are estimating as follows. Clearance - $525, Terminal handling – Airline Fee $225, Storage at Airline $130 a day Average 1-2 days, $93 CITES, $550 delivery to residence. The delivery fee is aggravating. We chose to send to Miami so that I could go grab it myself. It’s only 3 hours from...

African Trophy Export real time follow along

So AHG referenced out my case to a few other providers, including Coppersmith. They concluded that the charges are fair, and that I should be paying the US based importer. To summarize, the grand total of $4,400 to ship across a single crate from JoBurg to Miami. It contained a shoulder mount...

African Trophy Export real time follow along

Had a single crate arrive this week. A Buff Euro pedestal; two Nyala Euros, a shoulder mount Sable and some flat skins done by Highveld. Export agent was AHG as recommended by my outfitter. They sent by air from JoBurg via Tel Aviv to Miami. $2,700 for the dip and trip. Crate arrived in...

Calibers that make your Professional Hunter shudder

I’d heard the stories of PH’s not liking Weatherby Mags. So I was a bit worried when I showed up with a 300 WBY. Brake and all. A 20 year old first generation Ultralite. As a lefty; we don’t have many options. We headed to the range on the first day. We set up for a 100 yard shot. Rather...

The new Heym 89B got his Buffalo…

Hans was awesome. Between him and Jannie Nel I felt like I had two way overqualified PH’s. Took great care of me and put my then 12yo daughter on a fine Nyala. During my hunt I noticed Hans was wearing a pair of beat up boots. After some poking around I figured out we wore the same size...

    Bang flops on buffalo

The Buff in my profile pic expired less than 30 yards from where he was shot. Heym 89B 450/400 NE with 400gr Hornady DGX. Approximately a 35 yard shot. Broadside with a slight quartering towards angle. Put it on the point of the front of the shoulder/crease. Shot severed the aorta. On...

Africa is just not for me

I cannot wait to get back to Africa. Never met anyone who’s hunted there that isn’t a fan. Will say that it’s the opposite of my experience in Argentina chasing stags. Been there, done that. Won’t go back.

It’s in process. Will be my first straight pull rifle. Hope to pick the lumber in the near future. Setting it up with a Talley QD system to use both irons and a low power scope. With a bit of luck I’ll have it in a few months. Will be sure to share my thoughts when it does.

What is the BEST piece of hunting advice you've been given?

I did my first real solo international guided hunt when I was an early twenty something. When I arrived to camp; I was far and away the youngest hunter in camp. I ended up sharing a room with a hunter who had just retired. 65+ years of age. He told me something that really didn’t sink in at...

    Weatherby mark v

Love me some Mark V’s…. As a lefty Weatherby is one of the few left that offer a wide variety for southpaws. I’ve got the 257, 6.5-300, 300 and 416. Have shot the entire lineup. The 460 is a beast. Believe it or not; the most intense to shoot is the 378. The most punishing recoil I’ve ever...

Any recommendations for ocellated turkey outfitters?

Again, things may have changed. In fact, I’d bet it has otherwise they wouldn’t be in business any more. 10 years is a long time so my experience may be obsolete. Get some more up to date references before regarding my experience as gospel. I will also tell you that you are not obligated to...

Any recommendations for ocellated turkey outfitters?

It’s been a decade or more. I have recorded several World Slams, Royal Slams and Grand Slams at this point. I really only ask two things when on outfitted hunts. A legitimate opportunity at game and transparency in terms of pricing. Issue with Snook Inn Lodge is the latter. Indeed, everyone...

    Need help with boots

I’m a wide foot as well. I went with Courteney and now have wide versions of the Selous, Hunter and Safari. They are definitely available in wide widths. I did 10 consecutive days in the Selous boots on Safari last year. They are heavy. That weight did become more noticeable as the hunt...

Which rifle do we crown as the best looking ever?

I grew up hunting wood lots in the Southern US. Lever actions were abundant. Old Marlins and Winchesters were everywhere. Every now and again; you ran into a Savage 99. Those old timers who carried them also swore by them. The gun was so far ahead of its time. Lever action, controlled...

    Best looking round

I know Weatherby rounds don’t get much love amongst the AH crowd; however, no single round has been more effective for me than the 300 Weatherby Magnum. Whitetails, wild boars, bison, moose, bears, pronghorn, mule deer, sable, zebra, nyala. A true workhorse. That double radius shoulder is...
