    Resurrecting the 270 Win

Anyone who thinks a .280 is a better killer than a .270 doesn’t have much field experience with either. They perform exactly the same with the latter having a slighter flatter trajectory. To move up in lethality you need a stoutly loaded 7mm Remington mag. Even then some of the factory ammo for...

    Suggested 9.3mm Wildcat

A number of years ago John Barsness/Charlie Sisk put together the .360BS (.350 Rem mag case necked up to .366 dia). Wrote up a piece in Handloader if anyone’s interested.

    Loading .375 H&H

83grs H414, 70grs IMR4064 Both shoot well in a variety of bolt guns I've owned. These run in the 2600-2700fps range. You can drive them up to 2900fps but they'll come apart on the bigger stuff. Great, cheap bullet for the 375.

    The 7x57 Revisited...

Jack O'Connor's load for his wife's 7x57 was a 160gr Nosler partition over 52grs of surplus H4831. Velocity ran just shy of 2700fps. With today's H4831 I'd drop down 10% and work up. This load is perfectly safe in any modern strong action. I used it for years through an old Ruger tang safety 77...

    General opinion on .416 Taylor?

I've owned a Taylor since the early 80s. It's an old tang safety Ruger 77 RS that had been rebored/rechambered. I'm guessing it started life as a .338 but am not sure. I'd always wanted a rigby but in those days it was a dying caliber and what 21 year old had the money to buy a used gun or...

    375 H&H moose bullet

Try the Speer 235gr, semi-spitzer at 2600fps. Works well on any big game. You can drive them to 2900fps but they won't stay together.

    375 H&H in North America

The unsung hero of .375 bullets is the Speer 235gr. Driven too fast it comes apart on anything bigger then deer. Keep it in the 2600-2700fps range and you've got a reliable killer for bigger N.American game, too. Great penetration AND expansion. I used it on quite a few elk and black bear during...

    CZ 550 stock

Sorry folks, I should have been a bit more specific. I was comparing the 550 bigger bore caliber guns, 375 H&H and up, in my previous post.

    CZ 550 stock

Comb differences aside, the shape of the pistol grip between the two types is night & day apart. The Euro has a sharper curve to it making it quite a bit more comfortable/controllable and easy to reach the trigger. The American has a very wide, open grip making it harder to reach the trigger and...

    .404 jeffery on the cheap...

I'm going to keep the Rigby so selling it isn't an option. I can handle the recoil but just want another classic African caliber to hunt and play with. I can bring this project in under $1000. The cheapest .404 bolt gun I've found, new or used, is $2000. I think I'll go ahead and see how this...

    .404 jeffery on the cheap...

I want a .404 Jeffery badly but just can't afford a new or used one. So far I've been downloading a .416 Rigby to approximate .404 specs but it just isn't satisfying my lust. Recently I've been offered the opportunity to purchase a used wooden stocked Remington 700 in .300RUM for a few...

    235gr bullets for .375?

I shot a lot of them through a Ruger #1 .375 H&H over a 20 year period during my salad days of BG hunting the American West. Run a bit over 2700fps with a healthy dose of H4350 at this velocity the bullet held together well and killed deer, antelope, elk and the occassional black bear with...
