Who goes for shoes over boots?

Dude. My first Rolex GMT Master served me well for 33 years of flying in the USAF, including at least a thousand hours of combat time. There are very few watches that match it. Dude.

Buffalo Hunt in the Northern Territory Australia ended very badly

Your opening sentence as a premise for an attitude of accepting accidents is totally vacuous. Additionally, suggesting that airline training programs are geared towards accepting accidents is equally vacuous.

A Sad Day Yesterday. Had to Put My Old Dog Down!

My sympathy for you, Phillip. On saying goodbye to my beloved yellow lab, Jazz, two months ago, my sister-in-law expressed in the simplest, most poignant way. "Jazz was loved and he knew it". Phillip, Rosco was loved and he knew it.

Buffalo Hunt in the Northern Territory Australia ended very badly

The next time you board a commercial airliner, ask the Captain if he agrees that it's acceptable to "make a mistake" and share that you understand that "accidents can still happen". I can tell you that after 33 years of military flying that that attitude is "not acceptable".

    Best bullet for 30-378 Weatherby

Dare I mention that Hornady loads a 220 gr ELD-X (MV 3025 fps) for the 30-378? I'm interested in feedback from those that have taken large bodied plains game with this load. I think that I've heard criticism of the ELD-X bullet at short ranges, as well as positive feedback.

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

We've found that the "younger" generations don't have an appreciation of many of the things that we've traditionally valued. For example, a friend, who recently passed away, attempted to sell really nice China, Crystal, dining room furniture, plus artwork, etc after her husband passed. She and...

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

Men who wear Rolex's attract women of all sorts.

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

Likewise. I've worn a Rolex GMT Master I & II for 55 years now, including 33 years of military flying, including combat. Can't beat it for ruggedness and reliability. "Overhaul or oil change" has become very expensive, though.

What is the worst rifle you have ever owned?

My most marginal rifle was my first, bought it when I was 15 years of age, for deer hunting in MN. It was the 740 Woodsmaster in .30-06. I believe it was only sold for one year and replaced by the 742 model. The rifle worked fine as long as I used "iron" sights. It's major fault was that if one...

The Difference Between An Agreeable & A Difficult Client From A Professional Hunter Perspective...

Question from a newbie: Presuming that the shooter's Winchester rifle is Control Round Feed...is this not an example of one of the disadvantages of CRF? That is, with an empty chamber and magazine, the next round must be inserted into the magazine so that the extractor can then engage and...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

I used football as an example because I assumed that the experience thereof is a common experience among Americans, and not necessarily anatomically identical to shooting. I don't know many people of my generation who didn't play football....as I recall, we didn't whine about big "hits", we...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

In SEAsia, we were issued "jungle boots"....the idea was that they would be cooler on our feet. They were, however, the same boots issued to service people and they had steel shanks in the soles (to prevent against poisoned spikes, bamboo, etc.) As a result, they were very hard to break...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

USAF was the first service to buy the M-16, for the purpose of airfield defense. It made a lot of sense for that mission. I first fired one in 1964 while attending ROTC summer camp. USAF was collecting data on "first time" shooters and if there was ever a population of shooting neophytes, it was...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

We didn't walk in them much because there's not a lot of room to walk in a fighter cockpit and they hurt and were slow to break in.....McNamara had decided to save a lot of money by buying cheap flying boots and that's what we got. A lot of us coughed up personal funds to buy Army Jump Boots...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

At 77 years of age I have absolutely no reluctance to shoot a .460wm, .416wm, or .378wm. If I ever go on a DG hunt I expect that I will purchase a .416Wby....because I know my Weatherby rifles and I trust them. I took my bull elk last Nov with my .340 WM. I've had spinal surgery, both hips...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

I have had flying squadron mates who wore the same pair of leather flying boots through their entire 20+ year flying career because they didn't want to "break in" a new pair.

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

My comments about "budgie" hunters, who proliferate in the Dangerous Game videos, reflects their lack of physical conditioning and personal discipline when they pursue big or dangerous game.....that wealthy or poor slob who doesn't take seriously his personal responsibility for his performance...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

In some of the videos that I've watched, and obviously criticized for watching, the buffalo was not stopped on the first shot, but turned away from the shooter and ran away. In one case, a second shot in the rear end didn't have sufficient energy to slow the bull down, yet alone drop it. In that...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

For those who have shoulders dislocated while making football tackles there isn't much difficulty in understanding. My point being that we experience strong impact in a lot of the things we do....especially for fun....and we don't complain or whine.

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

Actually, the same line of thinking was espoused by DOD in the early to mid sixties about the M-16 rifle and 5.56 round. I know, because I heard that in "official" M-16 training classes.

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

I weighed 161 pounds when I first fired a .460 and .378 Weatherby. I didn't find the recoil to be unmanageable. In fact, I enjoy shooting my .340 Wby and it's my preferred rifle. No one on this site who played football, if at only the high school level, dared complain to their football coach...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

i'm raising my B.S. flag on this guy. I've owned 6 Weatherby's, have never had such a problem, and have never talked to a WBY owner or shooter who has.
