A custom gun made just for you (not someone else's custom - but that can also work depending on fit) is quite special in itself so don't discount the starter pack rifles to use as an action for your custom. With the Ruger I'm assuming it's the RSM and not the regular 77mk II as you can't get a...
Just look at the case sizes? The 9.3 X 62 is basically a 30-06 sized case necked up to 0.366". To say it's the equal of a 375 H&H is just wishful thinking. The benefit in a 9.3 X 62 is lethality without excessive recoil or at least giving the shooter a choice of a recoil level less than a 375H&H...
I use the Peltor TEP -100 and find it brilliant. Just keep it your cargo pocket till you are ready to do a stalk and the 3 AA batteries are foolproof no matter where you go, none of this finding a USB charger in the bush. They are a bit pricey but worth in IMHO. Have used them on 2 safaris and I...
That's what I heard too so I replaced the claw extractor with one Williams made which is supposedly from spring steel rather than the cast metal factory part.
Dual spring ejectors in the bolt face instead of just 1. You can view on their website, the ejection angle is now very flat relative to the opening on the action.
Sako finally addresses the ejection issues in the Sako 85 which occurred in some rifles with the model 90! And they never admitted they had a problem before!
All scopes can fail even the most expensive European ones. I put a VX 3 1.75 -6 on a 375 RUM and it failed within 10 shots sent it back and it failed again. Told Leupold to replace it and to their credit they did and sent me a bore sighting device to compensate me for my troubles. A great little...
Absolutely agree about being square on. An important side benefit is you don't get wacked in the forehead by your scope .
Good taste MD! My Lott is also an M03! One calibre where I don't mind the weighty all steel action.
You have a Sako 85 "deluxe" which I take to mean the wood stocked model. The recoil lug/plate is only held in by 2 wood screws. There are instructions in various forums on how to epoxy bed this in. Test to see if your barrel can move in the barrel channel. The 2 screws just cannot hold at the...
That is so cool to get the headstamped brass! Congratulations. Big fan of the 423 Bore myself as I have a 404J made by Bob of Kudu Services. If you ever get sick of the recoil the classic Nitro load of 2150fps with a 400gr Woodleigh just plain works on Cape Buffalo. Proved it to myself last year...
Lookup the Galco Safari Chin Sling. It's split in middle which makes it rest on the shoulder without slipping and extremely comfortable. Then you can put your hand though the split pull elbow back into the leather strap and have a hasty sling. All leather too and hopefully still made in USA.
If your gunsmith is happy with the action I think it would be a great build. But my MRC action was quite poorly made and would not eject nor feed without a lot of gunsmithing expense. Mine was a short action magnum in 300 WSM.
My 375 is a custom based on a Winchester M70 action. I basically...
To each their own! I don't think you can say that 2350fps is the correct load with the 400gr either nor is 2150fps. I think 2150fps was a common speed for a lot of the big bores historically but with modern powder can be easily exceed but is there any need?
It's up to the shooter and what the...
I just use the 416 Rem factory crimp die and it works just fine for my 404 Jeffery rounds. I posted the pictures on another thread. The Rigby FCD looks the same as the 416 Rem on btw.
See photos below. The jaws of the collet measure 0.455" taken out of the die. My loaded ammo Norma Brass & 400gr Woodleigh measure 0.445". Tight but it works. Don't know if you can see it at this resolution but the loaded round has been crimped. Hopefully you can see the line at mouth of the...
If you don't scope it you will give up a lot of shot opportunities. In your case since you already have a set of the AHR quick release mounts get another set for a scope in the 1-4 or 1-6 range. I have a Schmidt & Bender 1.25 - 4 x 20 on my M98 404J in Talley QD rings plus express sights on the...
Both are RSM as in the action is the Magnum length M77 style Magnum action. The one with the sling stud thru the forend is the original RSM. The complaint was it was too heavy. I dare say close to 11lbs bare. The second with the barrel band they lightened it a bit due to customer demand I guess...
I have shot Cape Buffalo with both a 375 H& H with 300gr Woodleighs and 404 Jeffery with 400gr Woodleigh. The 375 was going at 2550fps and the 404J 2150fps. They both killed Buffalo equally dead! However the 404 had a noticeable increase in "authority" or thump. Can't say one killed better than...
450 Dakota very nice. Since you had a 300 RUM before can you get 3 rounds in the Magazine? My M70 was originally a 375 H&H stainless rechambered to 375 RUM. Had to go to a couple of gunsmiths but it now feeds reliably but only 2 down. Was looking for RUM mag box & follower but none to be found.
We use this a lot in shotgunning. What you are experiencing is cross firing. If you want to see if you really need it just use some black electrical tape on your glasses so you cannot see the front & rear sight with your left eye when mounted. If you want to still see through use the non...
You Sir are a man of good taste. I have never seen so many rifles listed by one person in 404J. My Argentine 1909 M98 404J with S&B 1.25-4 weighs 10lb 6oz and my M70 375 H&H with Swaro 1.25-4 weighs 10lb 1oz. As you said balance is so much more important that pure weight. Both barrels are 23"...
Have a look on YouTube for Craig Boddington videos. He demonstrates well the use of sticks.
Also demonstrated in Boddington on Buffalo video Part 1.
Here's a tip: Practice dry firing on your own sticks in your own living room. Pick little targets like light switches a vase etc. It will benefit...
Aussie I'm from Oz too. Have owned a 404 Jeffrey since 2000 but only hunted with it in 2022 in South Africa! I was lucky enough to buy Bob De Vries of Kudu Services personal rifle on an Argentine 1909 Mauser. Absolutely beautiful and he custom worked the magazine and floor plate so it fits 3...
The Woodleigh PP's open up slower than the RN's. I have used the 300gr PP's in my 375 H&H to take Buffalo, Sable, Eland & Blue Wildebeest all with one shot. They performed in a stellar manner. You wont have any issues with the PP.
I have used the 400gr RN in a 404 Jeffery (they don't make a PP...
Mdwest you are absolutely spot on. I have both the 375 H&H & 404J and taken both to Africa and both have taken Cape Buffalo. One is not a better DG calibre than the other. I too was concerned that the 375 was only just "enough" for Buffalo. Turns out it is easily enough with good bullets and...
Perfection is in the eye of the beholder. 30/06 or 300 Win? Really either with the right bullets. 5 down v 3 down, more recoil v less, over 300m v less? Or just bring 1 gun then it's the 375 H&H. But who likes vanilla ice cream all the time? That just wouldn't be fun!
Indeed not true at all. Have brought ammo out and back to Sydney no issues multiple times. In fact never even checked on return but if you have it listed on the RGP no issues. B709 no longer required in NSW only an RGP.
What a coincidence! I also shot my Roan this July with a 404 Jeffery 400gr Woodleigh RNSP with PH Marius Venter of Kruger Hunting Safaris also in Limpopo area
I just came back from Africa where I brought 2 guns a 30-06 and a 404 Jeffery. Shot 2 Buffalo and a Roan with the Jeffery and it was wonderful. The 400gr Woodleigh Softs were devastating at a mere 2140fps significantly more so than a 375 H&H 300gr @2550fps. It just packs more wallop. The 30-06...
+1 on the Tuffpak Rifle case for 2 rifles. My second trip to Africa. Make sure you get the Tuffsack too then it's so easy to just slide it out open guncase one by one and allow the various authorities to verify serial numbers. I'd also suggest taking bolts out of rifles and packing in bubble...
FYI Lee 416 Rem factory crimp die will work on a 404 Jeffery. Sometimes the whole internal collet will come out but most times ok. If it does come out easy to put back in.
The main thing is case length. The 416Rem is 2.850" and the 404J is 2.860". My new Norma brass is around 2.870 and I trim...
I have the ebook as well. For the most part a great resource but I could not make any sense of what he said about the Weatherby double radius shoulders resulting in a case that are "prone to splits across the shoulder and neck". Certainly not my experience nor those of my friends who shoot with...
Had a chance to handle a completed rifle with the defiance CRF action whilst visiting at Hill Country Rifles. Had high hopes but if I wasn't going to chamber it in a DGR calibre I'd go with their non CRF action.
Not as smooth in operation which was very noticeable. It is not like an M70 action...
The biggest downside to a custom is not the cost but the wait! Mine was promised in 12 months it took 3 years. But given I never hunted with it for another 16 years I should have told the to take it easy instead of worrying about it!
Most of these guys are artists, perfectionists but certainly...
A Lot!!! Is the answer.
But after you forget how much it costs you'll get years of enjoyment!
Have way too many rifles and several custom guns. But I only have 1 rifle custom built for me. An M70 375H&H which took 3 years to complete and 16 years before its first hunt in Africa in 2019! It...
It's the 7mm STW all over again. No pressure signs amazing velocity for case size no pressure signs. Then they get pressure tested under lab conditions and they are all over 72k psi! Even worse for the 9.3 x 62 as load manual data is at very low pressure and we all know that our modern actions...
Hi Mike, I also used the 300gr Woodleigh PP in the 375 in Africa for Cape Buffalo, Sable, Gemsbok, Waterbuck, Blue Wilderbeest & Eland all just needed 1 shot except for the Waterbuck which needed 2. The Woodleighs performed wonderfully and being an Aussie made product being where I come from all...
