    Rifle Actions (Ranked)

Ruger No.1 '03 Springfield 98 Mauser Mannlicher-Schoenauer The 98 should probably be above the Springfield, but I have a soft spot for the '03. Every built '03 I've ever handled has been amazingly smooth and fast to cycle. Best regards,

    Info on Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine

Due to the 1934 proof dates, it is likely one of the Greek 1903 "1930 System" rifles that has been modified. Possibly one of the post war Mannlicher-Schonauer rifles that Stoegers had Steyr build on a cache of unissued Greek 1930 System rifles they discovered. This might explain the plastic...

Picked up a Sedgley Springfield Sporter; with a story

A few weeks ago I attended an auction and picked up this very nice, un-molested 30-06 Sedgley Springfield Sporter. This is a somewhat scarce model because it has a cheek piece, which was special order only, and it has the Sedgley “Speed Lock”. I have a real soft spot for classic pre-war...

Which rifle do we crown as the best looking ever?

I may have already stated this in this thread, but I think some of the best looking rifles ever produced are coming from Joel Dorleac of Dorleac & Dorleac. Everything I've seen from them is spectacularly elegant, with just about perfect lines. Best regards,

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

I have no experience with the 375 Ruger, but one more thing I'd put in the plus column of the 375 H&H is one thing I haven't seen mentioned yet in this thread, and that's the amazing smooth, and sure feeding and extraction of the 375H&H. Best regards,

    Old National Geographic Magazines

I subscribed for years and always saved each issue. I finally got to the point where I realized that I was never going to go back and reread or use any of the old issues for research or out of curiosity. Before I tossed them I checked with a local shop I knew that dealt in old magazines...

    Limpopo Malaria

You don't want to mess with Malaria, I came down with it once as I was returning from a trip to India. The headache I developed before I could get to the Doc I thought was going to split the top of my head wide open. That was over 35 years ago, and it still rates high as one of my worst...

    A. Francotte Mauser 10.75x68

I attended the auction and looked at this rifle. A beautiful gun that I don't think had been messed with very much except the probably refinished stock, not even drilled and tapped for a scope; nice old school gun. Two things kept me from bidding, one was the likely refinished stock, the other...

    Who is your favorite Tarzan?

I don't think there was a Gold's or 24 Hour Fitness gym in the jungle where Tarzan was living, so Alexander Skarsgard's overly ripped body just looks ridiculous as Tarzan. Johnny Weissmuller looked a bit more reasonable. Best regards,

    Decisions, decisions...Looking for some help!

Another possible "classic caliber" choice for you could be the 9.5x57 Mannlicher-Schoenauer aka 375 Rimless Nitro Express 2-1/4. Also, I'm sure 8x56 M-S magazines are like hens teeth, and could be sold for a pretty penny to someone looking for one. So I suggest not modifying it, and find a...

    Decisions, decisions...Looking for some help!

A bigger problem than the magazine spindle is overall cartridge length. The construction of the magazine limits you to cartridges basically the same length as the 6.5 x 54 (3.02") or just slightly longer like 7x57 / 275 Rigby. When Styer decided to build M-S rifles for longer cartridges like...

    Rifle rich and pistol poor...

For a first handgun you kind of have some conflicting priorities to consider if looking primarily for CC; compact and light weight vs. comfortable enough to shoot a lot to develop skill. I'd suggest going with a medium to full size semi-auto that fits you well, or a 4" revolver. And I'd...

    Rifle rich and pistol poor...

First, +1 to those that have suggested stopping by a well stocked gun shop and handle a number of different guns to see how they feel. Second, many public shooting ranges have guns for rent; try out a few and see what you like. If you're looking for a semi-auto I suggest you check out a CZ 75...

Hello from Bwana Moja. Africa is NOT "The Dark Continent"

I agree with most here that I don't consider the term "Dark Continent" as overtly racial. Though to maybe put a slightly different perspective on it, I doubt the term was originally coined by those who were actually living there, but more likely originally was applied and used by the explorers...

full length sizing 450/400 3" issue, maybe?

As an easy first step I'd contact RCBS. I'd also check the shell holder, if the shell holder is too thick it could be keeping the die from sizing as far down as it should. If that's the case before I started ordering other dies, I'd grind down the top of the shell holder to allow the die to...

    260 rem versus 6.5 CM

Another thought in support of 6.5x55. Since this will be for the kids, it'd be nice to introduce them to one of the classics so they can learn that there's not much that one of the new "Whizbang" calibers can do that hasn't been done as well as by the Swede for over 120 years. Kind of what happened with the Ranger VI mission to the moon. There was a camera failure, with stories circulating of a failure to remove the camera covers before launch. The reality was a power failure to the cameras, but failing to remove the covers was a better story. Best regards
