I use a 1x6 Leupold and leave it on 1x until I'm on the sticks and If there is enough distance and time crank it up to 6x although 1x is really enough for any realistic range on buffalo.
I celebrated my 45 birthday in Zimbabwe on my first safari and was 58 on my second trip to Zim in 2019 and my last safari in Zambia I was 60 and hope to return soon as I have an elephant waiting on me.
I believe these had Oberndorf actions and the 44580 serial number is the Oberndorf Mauser serial number.I have one simular but is in 8x57 and the serial 1121 number dates it to 1899 as it is a transitional intermediate small ring action.
The previous owner sent me this today and said there was more information if he can find it in his Dad and brothers records as they kept very detailed records on their guns.
A good gunsmith can install internal cross bolts if you feel the need external cross bolts look great properly installed.I like quarter ribs properly done but as said above it doesn't carry quite as well in hand.
So far for me it has been buffalo but I see elephant and leopard in the near future so that may change. For non dangerous game hyena would be my favorite.
This is another one I picked up recently and really don't need so I thought I would offer it here before it just gets buried in the safe.It is a very nice rifle with very good bores and per the previous owner shot very well.It has 23 5/8" barrels and 14 7/16" LOP to front trigger. It was retailed...
Dale was a good friend of mine and sadly passed away a few years ago and I just acquired it from his brother who is also a good friend. The only other proof mark I can find without removing it from the stock is in this pic there is also some kind of mark on the top of the front receiver ring...
I'm not sure of the proper name of the maker that's why I just posted a pic of it.I haven't done a search on the maker yet and was hoping someone here was familiar with him.
I picked this up last week to help a friend out so he could get a roof put on his garage and I really have no use for it.I thought I would post it on here to see if anyone had any interest. The makers name is on the pic of the rib.It has a 24" octagon to round full ribbed barrel and the LOP is 14...
Jack Haugh also had his own version of the 416/404 that was called the 416 Haugh.Champlins has one on their website and a friend of mine owns one but those are the only two I'm aware of.
The only DG rifle I've used on my last two hunts was a pre 64 M70 custom by Gene Simillion in 416 remington with a VX 6 1X6 and probably will be used from now on.It is light and very comfortable to shoot and it just fits me.
For all of you lefties out there Cabelas in Glendale Arizona has a Winchester M70 classic LH in 270 win.It is stainless and walnut for $999.It also has a weaver scope.
As mentioned above the Smithson mounts are very nice and many options such as a peep sight on the rear bridge and the option of mounting a red dot.You could also have an extra scope in mounts ready to go.
I'm lucky she doesn't question what I do with my money and I don't question her spending. I also don't bring up what I pay for some of my guns...she may have me committed if she knew what I paid for my H&H 500/450.....lol
