    .308 rifle recommendations?

Most would say shoot it and see. I personally dislike that design aspect so much that I would bed it even if it shot well.

    .308 rifle recommendations?

Sakos are beautiful, accurate rifles. I like the short actions for balance - it brings the weight of the barrel closer to the user and seems to make for a pointier rifle. Functionally it doesn't seem to matter. Only two things to be aware of :- 1/ In only some cases, the high angle of ejection...

    .308 rifle recommendations?

The Tikka mags are long enough for 2.810"(?) SAAMI OAL rounds so no more restrictive than many factory 308 mags. Waters Rifleman 308 family mags are a couple of mmm longer than standard, if wanted, and I don't think the extra couple of mm needs the bolt stop changed, but I'm not 100% sure about...

    .308 rifle recommendations?

I'll chime in on the suppressor issue, as someone has already mentioned it. The Tikka T3 muzzle diameter is 16mm, or .630". Kimber muzzles are .560". Much more meat in the Tikka muzzle for threading. To avoid muzzle swelling, the Kimber would need to be cut with a very shallow thread. I'm not a...

    Headed to Scotland Fall 2023

I've been there a few times. Hunted on only one trip. The hunting (roe deer) was good fun and reasonably priced. A bit of research and enquiry should find some options that aren't priced for wealthy sports, wherever they may live. The less trophy oriented places will be more reasonably priced...

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

"Predicted" data ? Ahem. "64000 PSI" ? another Ahem. As has been said, equal bbl length, equal pressure, equal SD projectiles, and using the most suitable powder for each is the only valid ballistic comparison, and one which will show the 375 to be ballistically superior. On game performance...

    Veld binocular suggestions

Good to see the love for 8x. Far more versatile than 10x, especially at distances under 300/400 yards. 8x can also be useful with 32mm objectives, whereas 10x32 is not so.

    Transitioning To A Blaser R8 - A Two Months / 500 Rounds Review

Depends what the intended usage is. I am no fan of small bore mags, but remembering that the setup already has a 300mag bbl, I would probably opt for the lighter bullet options of 257, rather than the greater grunt of the 270. If more is wanted than the 257, simply use the 300.

    The last pair of binoculars

Thanks for that. Good strategy to avoid having too many model ranges under the one brand. The SLC was always popular so good move to retain it, even if under another brand. That leaves the choice of NL or EL with the Swaro label. Sensible business all round.

    The last pair of binoculars

Got my doubts about the Kahles being a rebranded Swaro. My understanding is that they are made in different countries ? or is it different factories ? Also IIRC the Kahles are/were significantly cheaper than the SLC Swaros. Happy to be educated.

    Transitioning To A Blaser R8 - A Two Months / 500 Rounds Review

I've had a standard weight 300Win barrel threaded without complaint, although the smith was aware that Blaser barrel steel is hard. Since the US doesn't know what metric means, I would suggest caution in selection of the imperial/US thread diameter to ensure that sufficient muzzle wall thickness...

    The last pair of binoculars

I have the 10x42 NL Pure. For the reasons in my previous post I prefer 8x to 10x for all around use, but I wanted something with a little more punch than my Zeiss 8x42 HTs. The FOV was the tipping point for me with the NLs - near enough to the same FOV as my 8s. Theoretically there should be a...

    The last pair of binoculars

@redriverjake If your ranges are 300 or less, 10x42s offer no benefit over 8x42s , but they do have significantly disadvantages compared to the 8s. Namely, they have significantly reduced FOV, and significantly worse low light performance, depending on what you regard as low light. Up until...

    Reloading with Hornady ELD-X bullets

Wait and see. You may find that the standard stem is fine, as die manufacturers now seem to be making seating stems that suit long tipped bullets. I use Redding, and when I was developing loads for Sierra TMKs, I purchased an optional VLD seater stem, but it wasn't necessary. If yours doesn't...

So the 308 Win seems approved by AH, what about the rifle?

I forgot the Sauer 202. I have handled one of these in 308 with a synthetic stock and it would fit the bill perfectly, despite being a little above the weight target. Unfortunately I think that the 202 has been discontinued.

So the 308 Win seems approved by AH, what about the rifle?

A mild calibre in a 5kg walking rifle - seriously ? That really is unnecessary, but seems to not be uncommon in the UK for some reason. I have hunted roe there using a rifle which would been close to that weight, but I wasn't carrying it, and if I had been, the country was pretty easy and it...

@deewayne2003 Post it up in Blaser forums. US Blaser owners in particular are always baffled by the european stud size, and looking for swivels to suit. Someone with an R8, or any Blaser for that matter, would probably love to help you out.

    Blaser R8 for Dangerous Game

    Recommended Binocular Carry Methods

It works for me if have them high on, or above, the hip, and pushed a little to the rear. This carry doesn't work for my hunting at home, but would be very workable in the right place (Africa?). Easy to get at for me and minimal bouncing around. A pleasant surprise when I tried it. Don't...

    Blaser R8 for Dangerous Game

I have also found the configurator a little confusing and inflexible. I believe that this is due to the Euro clientele that Blaser sells to. Many wouldn't even dream of sighting in a rifle, as this is left to the "expert". The consumer is not as gun savvy as many consumers outside Europe, so the...

    Blaser R8 for Dangerous Game

Any Blaser mount and/or ring is designed to be strong enough for any cartridge that Blaser chamber. I still don't understand how those two piddly little lugs that hold the mount to the barrel can be so strong, but strong they definitely are. Ditto for the rings. The previous generation of Blaser...

Nosler Partition - Efficacy and Defects

And not forgetting that the John Nosler was reinventing the wheel, as the H-Mantel, which has a very similar design, predates the NP by at least 10/15 years. The H-Mantel has a partition, although not a full partition. Both are designed to expand very quickly, partially fragment and keep on...

Well I've Done It Now!!! (Joining The R8 Cult)

Nosler Partition - Efficacy and Defects

We are really brainwashed (or maybe we brainwashed ourselves) on weight retention. 100% is necessary in some circumstances, but not in many. The 60% to 70% works for me and kills quicker for me than 100% bonded. The partition is placed where it is for well thought out reasons. The further...

Optics Advice From Experienced Elephant Hunters or Professional Hunters

Scott, I have the 2 MOA dot in my Micro and it is certainly fine enough for 100 yard use on deer. Big 4moa dots were what held me back from buying a red dot sight for many years, BUT I am not hunting ele at 30 yards. I agree that the apparent size of a dot increases as the brightness is...

I should have included in my post that the Aimpoint with which I have experience is the Micro. I agree with @One Day on the older tech Aimpoints being a heavy tube with a red dot. This, and the size of the dot, put me off Aimpoints until the advent of the Micro. The Micro is a different kettle...

Optics Advice From Experienced Elephant Hunters or Professional Hunters

Yes, and yes !! Never hunted elephant, but have used Aimpoint. Nothing faster or with a better view. Look through one mounted on a rifle and you will understand. Note - I haven't used reflex sights, but would expect them to have similar benefits to the Aimpouint.

The Difference Between An Agreeable & A Difficult Client From A Professional Hunter Perspective...

It's the opposite for me. Pushing a round down into the magazine of either CRF or PF is less fiddly and much less likely to cause trouble than the much vaunted "dropping one in" of the PF. Unless the single load of the PF is actually started into the chamber with your fingers, there is a high...

    R8 Custom Barrels-Dream Come True!

I used the same barrel for many days in all weathers over maybe 10/15 years, and the finish was unmarked. Occasional surface rust in the flutes simply rubbed off with an oily rag. It's very, very good.

    Blaser 500 Jeffery

Nothing like a bit of weight to soak up recoil. I didn't really give it much thought until I spent some range time with pistols, and any added weight was very noticeable recoil wise. Used a ballasted smaller calibre rifle a few years ago and it was wonderful. The owner had been able to get the...

    Transitioning To A Blaser R8 - A Two Months / 500 Rounds Review

@Tanks and @TOBY458 This has all been discussed previously. 1/ A 458 barrel fits fine in the standard alloy receiver. The standard receiver is strong enough for the 458, but will kick harder than the heavier steel receiver. A separate stock/receiver is not necessary. 2/ Standard barrell is...

    Rifle slings

Like most of us, I have a few different types. Two that haven't been mentioned so far are the Safari or Boonie sling, which is great still hunting or in some country where having both hands free, but the rifle easily accessable, with minmal movement, is a big help. No use as a shooting aid or in...
