I book all my own travel domestically and for international non-hunting trips. But using a travel agent (@TRAVEL EXPRESS) for a planned hunting trip to RSA turned out great. In addition to being on top of all the info for traveling with rifles with a connection in Europe, they secured a timely...
US-based hunters made up a big portion of the overseas trophy hunters in pre-COVID RSA and Namibia. Moderators (aka silencers) are highly restricted in the US. Depending on the state, they are either expensive and a hassle to acquire, or just flatly illegal. However, if you use a rifle provided...
Received my hides back today in the form of Gemsbok and Kudu throw pillows along with Waterbok seats.
No idea what to do with hides from the next safari as I think my wife's patience is wearing thin.

I hope this issue has already been resolved. If not, BWI is the nearest US Fish and Wildlife port to DC . The trophies would be trucked there from Dulles. I used Laing International for customs clearance/brokerage at BWI with zero issues.

Yes, it was a great time. But without local friends to put it together, might be tough to arrange. If you do set it up and don't mind doing your own shopping, cooking, and laundry, it can be really good value.
A farm off the N12 about 40km southwest of Kimberly. Some South African friends organized it and we drove up from Cape Town and stayed in a self-catering house on the farm.
Heck, I had no qualms about hunting fallow deer in the western cape, and it doesn't get more non-native than that. Personally, the non-native thing doesn't bother me, but I'd take a pass on hunting a captive raised animal released into a not very big fenced enclosure a day or two before the...
Finally got the taxidermy from my first safari, which was last June in the Northern Cape. Given the limitations of my house, particularly ceiling height, and budget, I went 100% European mount, along with flat skins. I'm headed back in 2021, not sure what the plan will be on the taxidermy front...
So I was fortunate to get my taxidermy loaded onto a SAA repatriation flight last week as outbound cargo. My safari last year was my first, and I have euro mounts and flat skins for a kudu, gemsbok, and waterbok.
My question is, what interesting things have you all done with plains game hides...
If the airline cancels a flight that was marketed/sold in the US, the customer is entitled to a refund by DOT rule. Our tickets for June were just refunded by KMG. Personally, I'd take my cash back than any airline credit these days. It's not clear who will still be in business a year from now.
The chances of a planned June safari in the eastern cape just went from slim to none - KLM has cancelled our flights from IAD. While disappointing, this will let us go for longer in 2021, and hoping things are closer to normal then.
If you bought those tickets in the US and the airline canceled the flight, you are entitled to a refund to the original form of payment under DOT rules. If the airline refuses the refund, the next course of action is to open a dispute with your CC company and file a complaint with DOT here...
agree with tipping PH's in USR/EUR. But for those ZAR denominated expenses before and after the hunt, like hotels, rental cars, intra-country flights, etc. might be worth thinking about.
After Moody’s announcement today, all three major ratings agencies rate RSA sovereign debt as junk. Not helpful in the middle of a three week national lockdown. Will probably see a USD/ZAR exchange rate of 18 in the near term. Anyone with 2021 safari plans might want to convert funds in the next...
Actually, hypertension alone comes close to covering 40% of the population. In the study the condition was self-reported, which might mean it only captured those who were being treated for hypertension. About 9.5% of Americans are diabetic, 10% have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease...
It may come down to that if a vaccine turns out to be a multi-year effort. The issue is that the complications include age, obesity, hypertension, heart and respiratory issues and so forth that encompass something over 40% of the adult US population. It's not just asking the over 65's to stay home.
Well, I just checked and Qatar airlines has suspended service for 14 days. flights are still bookable from WDH-DOH starting April 1, but I wouldn't bet on them actually happening. Foreign nationals also aren't currently being admitted to Qatar, so if you did manage to get there, you would have...
In normal times, there are direct flights from WDH to both Frankfurt and Doha. I don't believe Frankfurt flight is currently operating. There are also flights to Luanda (Angola), Addis Ababa, Harare, Lusaka and Lubango. All of those destinations seem to have "out of the frying pan" potential. If...
As it happens, I remembered the H1N1 year clearly as my wife was pregnant with our first son and ended up standing in line (outside) for 4 hours to get vaccinated. They are both fine, and I was looking forward to taking my 10yo son on safari with me to the Eastern Cape in June.
Taking your...
It's going to be pretty devastating to the whole industry in RSA. They already had huge challenges with SAA's bankruptcy and potential restrictions on flying from the US through Europe.
South Africa friends let me know live during the presidents speech.
Here's president Ramaphosa's twitter: https://twitter.com/PresidencyZA?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author
Scroll down and you'll see the details I quoted in the first post.
Looks like South Africa is closed to hunters from the US and Europe until further notice.
Don't be surprised if the rest of Southern Africa follows suit quickly.
“We will limit contact between persons who may be infected. We’re imposing a travel on ban on foreign nationals from Italy, Iran...
Cape Cobras are bad news. If you get bit and envenomed, it's a major medical emergency. At least they aren't a spitting cobra. This is why I don't hunt in the early season in SA. Come to think of it, I don't go after quail in Georgia until late in the season for the same reason. :)
Good luck on your hunt! We vacationed in RSA last year and are going back for a 7 day safari with KMG this June. In addition to passports, you'll need to bring your son's birth certificate (original, not a copy). If his mother isn't also traveling with you, you'll need a notarized letter from...
2nd safari coming up in June. Plan to spend a few days visiting friends in Cape Town, then 7 days hunting with KMG in the Eastern Cape. It will be a family affair, taking along my 8yo and 10yo sons. If I am able to pick up a good trophy or two, that's great, but really looking to focus the trip...
That is going to be an awesome addition to your house! In terms of lighting, you might want to consider what you use to light trophies and art, as well for general lighting, elsewhere in your house. If you use soft white in the house (2700-3000k) and go with a bright white (4000-5000k+) in the...
I just used existing gear. Darn Tuff socks paired with 8 inch boots. Orvis briar pants in OG. Light weight, but long-sleeve, camo shirts with poly quick-dry undershirt. Mornings were chilly, so I did pick up a lightweight down jacket locally. This was for the Northern Cape, where the chance of...
I was in the same area, about 55km west of Kimberly mid-June this year. Crisp mornings (29-35F), warm afternoons (65-75F) that cooled right down again as the sun set. Cloudless each day. Wind was generally not a factor until close to sunset (after 5pm) , when it picked up to maybe 10mph with...
Why would the FLO really care about .375 vs. .416? If anything, it would be more of a risk that the license holder would stockpile .375 in excess of what's permitted on the license as it is much less expensive. The .375 also gives the shooter more reach than the .416.
I'd love to know the answer to your question in regards to RSA. Another question I have is that if I am traveling with a rifle and ammo, can I also travel with bullets (that is bullets not loaded in cartridges) in the same caliber?
Culls? I wish. :) The boys are 10 and 8 and shot a trophy black springbok and bontebok (sigh - $$ and a hassle to import) this year. I'm putting together a youth sized savage .243 right now and hope to keep them to common springbok, impala, blesbok, warthog as far as trophies go next year. On...
