    Safari Clothes

I wore Carhartt dungarees and they were perfect, a dark khaki pair and a mushroom/brown pair. For shirts , I have an Orvis Bush shirt that was perfect, as well as an LL bean poplin shirt that worked well. Olive is better than light khaki or the "traditional" safari khaki. Also, one of my...

    trophies are on the wall!

FYI.. I contacted the taxidermist about the block of wood in the warthog snout, and he indicated it is in there for permanent support. He said I could place some bondo in front of it and paint that white to disguise it. He seemed distressed that I was not 100% satisfied (even though i was not...

    Doxy,Cipro, ???

I took both doxy and cipro with me but did not need either . If you are taking doxy as malaria prophylaxis, then yes, you need to start it before your trip, usually 2 days before entry into exposure prone area. However, it does not work like that (prophylacticly) for tick fever. So unless...

Thanks! I am not sure what that white block of wood is for in the snout cavity. I have emailed the taxidermist to see if it was put in there for support for shipping, and if so,hopefully I can remove it. I got the idea for that mount and the skins on the plaques from some examples I saw in...

    trophies are on the wall!

I forgot to mention that we used Red Dune Taxidermy in Kimberly. They were air-shipped in one crate from SA to ATL. We used Coppersmith to arrange clearance in the US and ground shipping from Atlanta to our home (3 hours south of Atlanta). And no, we did not pick up a pintail drake and...

    trophies are on the wall!

Well, I have intentionally stayed away from the site for several months because hanging out here just makes me want to go back to Africa immediately. However, my trophies from my May 2012 hunt with Nico Smith at Amakulu Lodge arrived this week, and I now have them on the wall. While I am no...

    Shooting Sticks...

We took the primos tripod trigger sticks and they worked great. My only criticism is that won't quite go low enough for me to be 100% comfortable for sitting and kneeling shots. Our ph thought they were the best thing since sliced bread so we left them with him. I like gillettehunters...

    Hard Cases for Rifles

Pelican 1750. Can fit two scoped rifles in it if you need to. Plus it has wheels. And you can order replacement foam inserts to use with different guns. Absolutely worth the money in my opinion.

What are you wearing for boots?

I wore Irish setter soft paw chukkas, the model without the waterproof membrane, and loved everything but the sole, which was a little too hard and noisy. A softer rubber sole, like a crepe sole or nonchunky vibram sole, would make it a perfect boot.

    Barrel shot out

Diamondhitch I feel your pain. After shooting two weeks ago I noticed my wood stock browning xbolt .300 winmag was starting to crack on both sides by the bottom metal. So I call browning and there is no way they can fix it before I leave (may 17). So I bought a new composite stock from them...

Any Experience With Federal Fusion Ammunition For Plains Game?

Thanks again for the input. I have since decided to stick with federal premium vitalshok 180gr NP's and feel very comfortable with them in my rifle. I have averaged about forty rounds a month over the last few months in prep for my May trip date but the confidence gained from shooting from...

Any Experience With Federal Fusion Ammunition For Plains Game?

Wondering if any of you have had any experience with Federal Fusion ammo, especially in 165 or 180gr 300 win mag, for plains game. Considering that for 20 rounds a box is half the price of Federal vitalshok 180gr NP's, I picked up a box to see how they will group in my rifle. Thanks!

Russell or Courteney - Safari Boots...

After much deliberation, I have decided on the Irish Setter SoftPaw chukkas. I have a pair without the ultradry lining, and a pair with the ultradry lining, and I am going to take both. They wear like a glove for me, are quiet, and I have worn on pair or the other every day for several hours...

CHOICE in .375 - Guidance please!

Although I don't see this specific model on your list, and granted I have not placed my hands on any of the above rifles -- I was watching the "Gun Nuts" from Field and Stream on the Outdoor Channel on Wednesday night, and one of them did an in-depth review on the new Winchester Model 70 .375...

"waterproofness" of Russell Safari PH boots?

yep; I ordered a pair of the Irish Setter 7" wingshooters, but they are a little heavy. So I have now ordered a pair of the 6" wingshooters, and a pair of the softpaws that are waterproof and have a gussetted tongue. I will post my impressions. I like the sole on the wingshooters, it is a...

    Standard cartridges really are important

Ouch! What a nightmare. Note to self: I will either wear my primary pair of boots on the flight, or pack them in my carry-on! Can borrow or rent a rifle and buy some ammo for it, but I would hate to walk 10 miles a day in brand new boots! I am more scared of getting blisters than I am of...

I am considering a new pair of boots, specifically for use on my trip to RSA in May 2012 (hunting out of Kimberley with Amakulu Safaris). Several years ago I received as a gift a .270 winchester Model 70 Ranger from a family friend, who has since deceased. It was basically a "hand-me-down," so I do not have any documention, etc., associated with the rifle. I plan on taking it as a second rifle on my trip to South Africa. Is...
