Some great deals to be had on chrono’s because the new Garmin is the easy button. Any will work for occasional use.

Problem with ruger M77 RLS in 270

Lots of good ideas. Another thought. I’d inspect the back side of the claw extractor, look for a burr or odd bend or something preventing it fully snapping into place.

Truck - what do you drive, and why?

2019 Tundra. Cab space, reliability and all old out of date well proven technology, it's perfect because everything works. Were I to do it again, I'd look for a 16 - 18 to have the better transmission cooler and still have the 38 gallon gas tank.

    Anyone else butcher?

We do all the processing on most game we take. Including a variety of sausages. Only use a processor if unseasonably warm and humid and can’t get home to process within a day.

    USA: Eating buck

Congrats! Same story in SE MT as far as deer numbers. We have rested the ranch we hunt for two years now. Where there were hundreds, you are lucky to see 5. Drought then blue tongue hit them hard and last winter was beyond brutal.

    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

You are on the right path. As I've often said if it took ft lbs to kill, arrows wouldn’t. As long as you accurately place a properly constructed bullet of adequate mass for the chosen quarry, within its designed velocity envelope, stuff dies. Ft lbs has little if anything to do with wounding...

    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

I use 5x to just over 400 yards while hunting. Too much power makes it harder for me. I’ve practiced enough with my crossed sticks that I am good to just over 350 sitting, but if over 200 I prefer an attached bi-pod or being prone. I do sort of load my sticks a little, like one would a bi-pod...

    25-06 Ammo?

Have had stellar results with 117 interlocks, 115 and 120 partitions, 115 ballistic tips, and 120 fusions. All on game up to and including cow elk. Shots from bow range to over 350. I have used 100 ballistic tips, but up close they create quite a splash”, but kill effectively.

    Long range target shooting

Those are generally good rugged scopes and holding up to the constant dialing very well. They tend to be calibrated accurately too so one can rely on the moa/mil input. Have fun.

    Best Shellfish?

From the west coast, I favor Dungeness crab in a Cajun style boil. I pull them out and cover with ice to cool them immediately to avoid drying out. Eaten when still warm or later when cold, that’s my fav. Scallops and very fresh raw Kumamoto oysters are contenders too.

Why was the bring back Von Gruff thread deleted?

I was told this after my thread was deleted. “There will be no discussion on AH regarding Garry or his knives. ”. So hopefully that is a help and won’t get me in any trouble.

    Re-Barrel a .30-06 to ??

With your current battery and a desire for no overlap, 338-06 is where I’d go. I say that while fully enamored with my 9.3x62 and it’s ballistic twin the 35 Whelen.

Looking for a really good handheld GPS

Garmin is what I use and recommend. If using in bad weather the models with buttons are good. Otherwise a touch screen can work fine too. I prefer the tactile certainty a button gives me. Especially if things get cold, wet and/or sticky.

    Otter 841 wanted for theft

Funny. Maybe 841 is taking some lessons from the Killer Whales near Spain that are biting off rudders and sinking some boats.

    Scope Question

I’d be sourcing the rings with inserts. Burris used to make some, others may now too. Anyway, they come with several different inserts that fit snuggly inside the ring that can correct elevation and help.

    9.3x62 Bullet Swap Question

The Nosler Reloading manual shows both bullets together with one set of loads, so you are good. Where folks get in trouble switching bullets is where the bearing surfaces and/or constriction are different enough, singly or together, to materially impact pressure.

    Best precision rifle suggestions?

From that list, Seekins. Although I can make a case for a Tikka and spend more on the scope. The others are more hit and miss on accuracy in my experience. The Browning X-bolt would be a good choice to add too.

Ballistic data 25/06 and 300 Winchester Magnum

As to which boom stick is best over 1k, probably come down to the fastest barrel twist. You are running into the reasons the 6.5 CM, the PRC cartridges, and a number of others came about. Also the larger the bullet the easier it is to see where it splashes if you are not on target. That and...

Ballistic data 25/06 and 300 Winchester Magnum

Pretty area. Sounds like quite a challenge. You may want to factor in spin drift and Coriolis effect too. Especially if you are trying any of those longer shots over 1K. But at 1k they will have an effect. I hadn’t considered the high humidity, that may start tipping the scales to the higher BC...

Ballistic data 25/06 and 300 Winchester Magnum

I’d run a ballistic calculator for both bullets at the hi and lo velocities. Then compare the expected drop “error” due to velocity variation for a given bullet at 1k. Hi - lo for the same bullet = what I’ll call drop “error”. Compare that to the wind drift difference for both bullets at hi and...

Ballistic data 25/06 and 300 Winchester Magnum

In that case the 195 gr. load has promise. If it holds 1moa or close to it with 10 or better yet 20 shots and a SD in the single digits, Ron could be in trouble. For beating buddies, you can usually get away with a little more error, both in accuracy and SD. So I’d bet a 10 shot 1 1/4 moa ish...

Ballistic data 25/06 and 300 Winchester Magnum

Have fun with it. I shoot to 600 yards, so I can get away with fairly large SD’s and if I can make fair wind calls I am shooting OK. That practice really helps me hunting when faced with 350 - 400 yard shots, which is almost my limit. 1K is a whole different game. It can get humbling fast.
  28. T

Ballistic data 25/06 and 300 Winchester Magnum

Your instincts are spot on. Once you get way out there, the velocity variation, or more properly standard deviation, becomes a major component. If your SD varies much, the further you shoot the more vertical stringing you will see regardless of inherent rifle accuracy. The other huge factor is...

    Barrel twist for close shots

Some bench rest shooters call it the bullet going to sleep. I have seen it once, I think. My rifle shot OK, not great at 100, just under 2”, but at 200 it held the same group size. 2” at 200 I’ll take, to 300+ things opened up per usual. Go figure.

Bob Nelson I sold my .243!

Agreed. I regret selling a Savage 99 in 358. But he wanted it much much much $$$ more than I wanted to keep it. Still have my BLR in 358. It hits hard with 225’s and 250’s.

Bob Nelson I sold my .243!

    Or use the wrong bullet.
  37. T

Bob Nelson I sold my .243!

It’s not a bad idea. Drive the price of 243’s down. I’d buy a few more. It’s a great cartridge. Anything one could sensibly do with a .257 bullet, one can do with a .243, with the caveat of the right bullet. Too many 243 big game horror stories are a result of the wrong bullet choice. That’s on...

    Single Shot 500 Nitro Express

I have a light single shot 12 ga slug gun. NEF/H&R I forget. Was trying to find a reasonably accurate slug gun for a youth hunt 25 years ago. It’s no fun to shoot. For shipping and $100 you can be the next proud owner and see if your dental fillings are still secure. Trust me, if they are not...

MAULED: Lessons Learned from a Grizzly Bear Attack

If it doesn’t, I‘d be carrying a short barreled 12ga stuffed with stout slugs. Are those allowed? My friend looked up while fishing in AK, big brown in full charge towards him. He’s knee deep fishing. Dropped his pole, swung the 12ga around and stopped him with one shot at about 10’. Zero idea...

    Wyoming Winter Kill

Only in places. Listened to a UT biologist a couple days ago, decent fawn survival of collared fawns in some areas, almost 0 is parts of NE. Collared doe survival varied greatly by area too. Even NE, one spot 20%, another 80%, both in NE.

.25 Caliber Rifle Cartridges and the Future of Them

Phil Shoemaker allowed the 270 as a min for Brownies. He said anything smaller was a stunt. That would be with him as a guide backing things up. Suspect he preferred a little more bullet weight, but he was OK with it. As I recall, neither bullet weight or bullet type were specified. Grizz are...

.25 Caliber Rifle Cartridges and the Future of Them

I recall that or a very similar article. Seems it was whitetails in TX? Memories fade, but the 25-06 performed the best. Actually matches my results with game up to the size of Mule Deer. 117 gr. Hornady InterLock performed very well for me. But any 115-120 gr. bullet I used worked well. Would...

    Wyoming Winter Kill

Ranch I hunt is SE Montana has been hit hard again this winter. That’s after a winter die off a couple years back, back to back drought years and a blue tongue outbreak summer of 21. Local ranchers have lost cattle. It’s bad. Where there were hundreds of deer, we see few. Maybe only 15 deer...

300 PRC for long range hunting cartridge?

The advantage the 300PRC has for long range hunting and shooting vs a 300WM is a faster barrel twist rate. Allows those heavier bullets to be stabilized. But most of that advantage does not start to come into play until 500-600 or more imo. But finding ammo can be challenging. So for your use...

Long Range Precision Hunting - Recoil/Caliber vs. Terminal Ballistics

It tends to be a horses for courses fit in terms of internet opinions, imo. The ability to kill effectively at distance is one of those better to have and not need than need and not have skills. That’s how I roll anyway. The need and not have is where bad things often occur. The funny thing for...

Long Range Precision Hunting - Recoil/Caliber vs. Terminal Ballistics

You asked about practical rifles for more rugged hunting, probably smaller than your 300 mag. I’d look hard at a Tikka T3X lite stainless in something like a 270 Win. Not pretty, just brutally effective. I practice to 600 yards and am confident taking game to that range under ideal conditions...
