Hunt over water; Shoot from truck

I’ve learned there are many different traditional hunting methods, based on the game and the environment. They including tracking, spot and stalk, different types of blind or high sit hunting, baiting, driven hunts, hunts with hounds etc; each best suited for a specific context. I’ve often...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

425 WR. Built in bolt guns, take-downs and doubles. Gets it done!

New and pristine or used with patina?

I had a PH I hunted with in Tanzania some 20 years ago, Ian Lennox (RIP). Without the scope or sling, this looks like it could be his rifle. The stories it could tell…

New and pristine or used with patina?

It’s a beautiful rifle. I think the length of the fore end and the long slender slope to it contributes to its graceful appearance and draws the eye away from the height at the rear of the action. I’ve seen some H&H rifles proportioned similarly. It’s truly well executed.

Big Elephant Reportedly Taken in Tanzania

I’ve hunted Longido with Michel, albeit not for elephant. I did see elephant there, and they didn’t seem anymore habituated to people than those I’ve seen in the Caprivi, down south in Tanzania or elsewhere. I know Michel to be an articulate, grounded, committed, steadfast proponent of ethical...

    Financially ready for a Safari?

You may find is insightful to ask how old people were when they went on their first safari and, frankly, whether they were single. I think you’ll find a smaller population that makes a first trip in their late twenties or early thirties ahead of having family obligations and a larger group that...

Opinions please: .375 H&H Custom Built on Remington 1917 Action

Another way to look at “what’s it worth” (which the auction will most precisely determine). I think the best 375 express rifles likely have open sights, barrel band sling swivel, recoil pad, cross bolts that you mentioned and perhaps an ebony forend tip to boot. If this rifle had all of that...

Ranking Plains Game, Ranking Dangerous Game

X3 LDE would be really hard to beat IMO. I don’t have the same interest in trudging around the rain forest for a glimpse at a bongo. Tracking elephant is hard to match. And you get close, very close, typically.

    Rifle Actions (Ranked)

I was hesitant to weigh in, but I see so many misguided souls: 1) M98 and all its variants; M70, Springfield etc 2) Farquharson and its variants, including Ruger #1 3) Anson and Deeley boxlock and similar 4) Semi-autos designed by Browning and Garand 5) 1895 that shoots the pointy bullets and...

Convince me to look at South Africa

Put and take operations, and a large property with self propagating populations are two different things. I’m not judging either one…. Be very candid with your outfit about your expectations. Many operations in RSA are not put and take. Focus on the animals native to that part of RSA, large...

Going to Africa looking for a Winchester 416

Having piloted both November and Zulu Sierra registered aircraft, it sounds like it could be more sporting than hunting a buffalo with a push feed! :)

Alternatives to wired transfers of money

I’ve used wise.com to pay for hunts, guns, cars, tuition to a number of places, including Japan, which can be complicated to get right. I’ve found it to be easy, reliable, traceable and inexpensive. No more waiting in the lobby while the local credit union to tries to figure it out….

How inaccurate a double rifle when?

Rare Breed’s experience matches my own, tinkering with loads for about five different doubles. Bullet weight and velocity go a long way in matching the recoil the rifle was regulated for, or the position the end of the barrels are in, when the bullet exits. I’ve read a lot about powders and...

Going to Africa looking for a Winchester 416

Early in my years hunting in Africa (>25 years ago) I had the good fortune of hunting with some remarkably experienced PHs, that themselves carried a 375 on buffalo hunts (as some insight, one of them had the cast and set of the Hatari movie hosted in their house, as their farm was what is now...

    Fill this Rifle Gap

If you reload, it’s really just finding the bullets or waiting for Woodleigh to make them again. I have 3 WR 318s and a WR 280 Ross. The Ross is harder to keep fed. If you’re a real glutton for punishment, venture into the 6.5 kurz mauser or 242 Vickers/Manton/rimless nitro express. The 242...

    .223 for Steinbok, Duiker, Klipspringer?

Experience does not support the “either or” construct, that the shot is either an ethical, quickly effective heart/long shot, likely obliterating the animal, or an agonizing gut shot that allows for good taxidermy. These shots being discussed are reliably, remarkably, quickly effective. That...

    .223 for Steinbok, Duiker, Klipspringer?

To the original question, I recommend bringing whatever rifle your wife is most comfortable with, and relishing the fact that you get to enjoy this together. Especially if your interest lies mostly in kudu, gemsbok and the like, you have just the perfect hunting companion. My concern with the...

    .223 for Steinbok, Duiker, Klipspringer?

I’m not that much of a tiny ten guy myself, but from what I’ve seen first hand with many different species, the biggest challenge is having enough left so that the taxidermist can sew back together a full body mount. I’ve seen a few almost cut in half. Some of the full body mounts you see with...

Third Bite/Greener Crossbolt On Double Rifles. (Or Lack Thereof)

Rising bites and greener cross bolts are super cool. A lot of these third bites were introduced when metallurgy was a little less predictable than today. Anyone other than Kevin have first hand experience with a failure? Kevin- can you share more about that?

Generations separated by a common language...

I’m familiar with all three terms but have been using “base layer” the last few decades. I too grew up calling them “long johns”, having no idea why or what that really means. I think thermals are also what glider pilots use for lift. At least the most recent term makes sense - it is worn...

Truck - what do you drive, and why?

Sounds like an electric Edsel. I pointed out a Tesla Cybertruck I saw in traffic to my wife and she said “that redneck Delorean looking thing? It looks like back to the future with a mullet” I think the Dodge Ramcharger may be the first one that actually makes sense, particularly if you tow...

My Path To Regulating My New 470 DR

This is great to see. I appreciate you sharing. I’ve found that dialing in the load to the targeted velocity for that round, generally dials in the regulation as well. I’m glad this is working so well for you and your upcoming hunt. It can be a maddening, elusive black magic at times.

Westley Richards Retail Customer Service (UK)

+2. They are great to work with, even from the US. I recently had my first return and it went very smoothly. Buy with confidence. I think many of us are pleased to see that Westley Richards is still in business, still making best quality firearms their traditional way, and didn’t move to...

Dangerous Game Hunting and the case for bigger not always being better

All good points and very insightful, as I find your posts to consistently be. Ref 458 and 375 solids on hippo on land (presumably for body shots?). Many here feel solids are obsolete given the quality and reliability of premium bullets such as the A-frame. I think the still have a place in...

Dangerous Game Hunting and the case for bigger not always being better

I’d start with swift’s break away solid and see where that goes, literally. It’s worked well for me. I’ve had a Woodleigh solid (not hydro) rivet and wander off course. I like the metplat type solids.

Dangerous Game Hunting and the case for bigger not always being better

I’ve never seen a well placed 300 gr premium bullet from a 375 H&H fail, on buffalo or anything else. With solids, or a highly controlled expansion bullet, it’s even well suited for the tiny ten. Even at 300 gr, it has more reach than many think. What the 300 gr loses in muzzle velocity, is...

    Good Gun Deals This Week

It was admitTeddy lot far and intended to provide a little humor. Let me provide a more substantive response. This is the good deals thread. There is a definition of a good deal in the first post, but in summary, its an interesting or desirable rifle at a price below market value. The market...

    Valmet 412s .308 Double Rifle

If those are 1” squares, I think its shooting as well at 100m as many doubles, that likely cost much, much more. I’ve met a number PHs and local hunters in the Limpopo that swear by the 308. You have a great scope for the conditions I’ve seen there, in a short, fast handling package. How well...

Yeah, really wide open… mostly Robert’s gazelle and the like…. A little like hunting pronghorn, but in Africa….

    Offhand vs. Sticks

My rifle, not my sticks. I’ve always used the PH’s tripod, adjustable for height, like Tally Ho mentions. This is west of Lake Natron on top of the rift valley wall, near the Serengeti NP border, and amongst the longest distance shooting I’ve done in Africa.

When is the load good enough for Dangerous Game

Your load is good enough and you’re well prepared. In the spirit of preparation, the DG PHs I’ve hunted cycle their rounds through the action each time they load and unload, or basically daily. Some them also put the “new” round at the bottom of the magazine, by unloading the rest, once...

    Offhand vs. Sticks

“6” circle easily enough at that range and much better if I was slow and took my time”. I recommend you use sticks and get comfortable with them. The PH will carry them and have a set etc. I don’t bring my own. You’re likely not shooting a still target and taking your time. You are likely...

    Ghosts of Darkness 2024

I used a 300, as it was what I had for “everything else”. I’ve never known them to need a more potent round than anything else their size. Impressive bushpigs above for sure. They are a challenging hunt, largely underrated by foreign clients. Hunting them over hounds with the locals is a hoot.

    .375 H&H 300 grain Nosler Partition vs Swift A-Frames

I think you will find most will tell you the partition is a “softer” bullet, with less weight retention, less penetration and a front section that far more easily fragments apart. I think the A frame is a far better choice than a partition for buffalo, and amongst the very best choices for...

    .375 bullet weight

I’ll be the third to pile on. I use 300 for everything - from Thompson’s gazelle to buffalo. There is something to be said for consistency and simplicity. There is an old adage that goes something like “beware the one rifle rifleman”. I don’t have the discipline to stick to only one gun, but...

.400/360 Westley Richards - Is this a suitable cartridge for DG?

Sounds like a really cool rifle, and perhaps a little of “labor of love” to shoot it. It would be great to see a few pictures if you have them. Have you found the brass, dies etc to reload it?

.400/360 Westley Richards - Is this a suitable cartridge for DG?

Cool cartridge, but it’s ultimately a rimmed, obsolete 358 Winchester, more or less….maybe a little less…. I would be curious with what Bob 35 Whelen could do with it given a few pounds of CFE223!

    Auction Hunt in Africa?
