Time to go long on CRF rifles?

I am a left hand shooter and I like classic CRF rifles. This is a problem so I have been buying them when I need / find them. I have had quite a few built by custom rifle makers and my hunting rifles are built on Granite Mountain (1), Winchester Model 70 (3), Dakota 76 (1) and Ruger M77 Mrk.II...

One gun or two? On safari

Makes sense to have two rifles for a DG and general game safari. I carry two rifles and have two sighted scopes for each rifle fitted with Talley QD rings. You could do well with just a single rifle in .375 H&H, provided that you have thoroughly vetted the rifle and it's fitted with an extra...

    Reloading for Dangerous Game

Some calibers (like the 375 H&H) offer a wide range of factory loaded ammo so the reloading of ammo is not an imperative, though the expense can be rather high if you really practice as much as you should. In my own case I have both a .375 H&H and a 404 Jeffery. Ammo for the .375 is easily...

Federal packaged the 160 Grain TBBC in 7mm RM, but I am not sure they still offer it. 1990s Winchester 70 Better Infield Than Pre1964

re: the original trigger on M70s, most of mine are fine, but on a Classic Sporter I have in 7mm Mag, the original trigger was faulty... set for any pull weight under about 6.5 lbs it would fir on closing more than 50% of the time. It resisted tinkering and was unsafe. This developed shortly...

    Steel vs Tungsten

Turkeys are usually shot in the head while standing on the ground, thus a tight choke is "better". All other birds are (or should be) shot on the wing where a open choke is much more effective. Tungsten is deadly in either case.

When is the load good enough for Dangerous Game

Sounds like your load will work fine. You will be very unlikely to shoot DG at much beyond 100 yards. Probably more like 40 to 60 yards for the initial shot. I suggest that you build using new or once fired brass, crimp every round using a Lee FCD, load every finished round into the magazine of...

The 404 Jeffery history and related information

Gert The 400 gr Swift semi spitzer A Frame or some of the older Barnes TSX type bullets may be a bit more efficient for shooting at longer ranges. I used my 404 on an eland at 200 yards plus with the rifle sighted dead on at 100 yards. I needed to hold higher on the shoulder. I did, but...

Powder thrower capacity with big cartridges

For years I've used a $35 digital scale I bought off the internet (dead reliable to two decimal points), an RCBS balance scale to check it, a teaspoon and a trickler. Face it ... you are not going to load 100s of .375 rounds at a time.

    Scope recommendations on a .404J

I have two scopes for my 404J with Talley QD mounts... a Leupold VX3 1.5-5X and a Leupold VX6 1-6X with no. 4 reticle and firedot. I've shot it with both scopes and prefer the VX3 - it's smaller and lighter. The VX6 has slightly better optics, but is bulkier and heavier.

Yes, I know. Large bore, big bore, super bore, etc. I can kill ANYTHING on this planet with a 30-‘06, but will it die before it kills me? Academic, perhaps, but germane to the discussion.

    Whitworth ,451" English Sporting Rifle

I have become interested in a muzzleloading rifle for informal target shooting and occasional use in hunting. .375 vs .404 jeffry

Lengthy discussion here. IMO, the comparison is 'apples and oranges'. The .375 H&H is a MEDIUM BORE cartridge that is broadly applicable and can handle buff in a pinch f backed by a appropriately armed PH. The 375 can be used at distances up to 250 or, perhaps, 300 yards, so it is a 'heavy PG...

Will a Tikka action be a good start to build a 416 Ruger?

I think the Tikka is a nice little rifle. But I do not think it is a basis for a DG rifle, if that is what you have in mind. The magazine is problematic, as pointed out, and no CRF, the rifle is too light, etc. I would just buy a Ruger Alaskan or Hawkeye in 416 Ruger and be done if that is the...

    Help identifying a rifle

It's a M94 or M96 Swedish Mauser. You may find that simply warming it up with a heat gun will soften the Loctite and epoxy and careful work with a turn screw will get the scope rings off.

    308 Norma Magnum

I am building a 308 NM right now. I like the cartridge. FWIW, I doubt going to any other 30 caliber magnum will tame the recoil at all... it will probably increase the recoils some. My advice would be to re-barrel in 7mm Remington Magnum - it has a lot less recoil due to the lighter bullets...

    .270 vs .280

I own/owned rifles in many calibers. For run-of-the-mill hunting up to PG I like the 7mm rounds... 7X57, 280, 280 AI, and the 7mm RM. They work. With appropriate bullets I've killed deer, elk, roan, zebra, impala, reed buck, and more. One shot kills 80% of the time. I am building a 308 Norma...

    .375 vs .404 jeffry

Probably optimal, but if recoil is a problem, you can go lower and still get great performance. I load a Swift A Frame or Barnes meplat type banded solids at 2250 or so and the 400 grain Swift AFs are a smack-down buffalo round with good accuracy.

Suitable versatile Rifle types for mixed Bag

OP - - I were you I would just buy a Model 70 Safari Express in .375 H&H, carry it and shoot it - a lot. When you start thinking/booking an African Hunt you'll probably have plenty of time to decide and order something different if needed. Then take both rifles on your hunt. Asking for...

    WJ Jeffrey, double barrel rifle

Since the OP stated that the rifle was purchased IN AFRICA it is a good bet that it was a 'production' rifle' resold by a dealer. Therefore it is probably not a 'custom' or special ordered rilfe. My two cents.

This is also typical of blind magazine rifles - the magazine well in the stock is the magazine - no magazine box per se.
  42. Nevada Mike

    .375 vs .404 jeffry

Part of the feeding issue with 404Js (if there is indeed an issue) is that many are built on standard Mauser actions, which are a bit too short in the action, magazine and follower. They do take some careful work as many here have realized. On a long (magnum) action that has the correct Mauser...

How do you rank/compare/contrast the difficulty and overall experience of hunting each of North America's Big Game Species?

In the 60s and 70s mule deer populations were much better than today. In northern Nevada, eastern Idaho, Arizona Strip, western Wyoming, or southern Utah you could expect to find a good mule deer buck if you worked at it and had a bit of luck. My best mule deer was a 31-1/2" buck taken in 1973...

Which Action For custom Dangerous Game Build

I would choose a standard DG caliber in a standard length CRF action. I think, also, that a detachable magazine is more a potential liability than an asset. Personally, I prefer a 40 caliber to a 375.
