The goal is to drop your game. That you did and the bullets worked. Could they have worked better? Yep.
I had excellent success with Federal's Trophy Bonded Tipped, 180's in my 300WM. They held together and mushroomed superbly after going through Impala (end to end), Waterbuck, and Kudu...
I can tell you from experience that they are excellent bullets. I took all of my animals in southern Zimbabwe with factory 180 grn TBTs out of my 300 WinMag (as mentioned by my brother above). Animals ranged from a Jackal and Baboon to Kudu, Waterbuck, and Wildebeest at ranges between 80 and...
Glad you're back, Dennis! You've been through quite the ordeal. I think many of us have been hoping and praying for you on the sidelines not wanting to clog up your emails and other accounts. We're here and happy that you're on the road you recovery!
Best healing wishes to you!
Jeff
Nice write-ups! I too used a 300 WM. Only I used Federal factory loaded 180grn Trophy Bonded Tipped ammo. Didn't have enough time to work up a handload. The factory loads were just over 2900 fps which is perfectly acceptable in my book. (Though we will be working up a handload.). I found the...
Nice write-up @Tommy Teas !
The 225 gn bullets performed very well!
I would think that 2300 fps MV of the 285 gn TSX probably was not enough to initiate expansion. Perhaps it didn't hit anything solid enough?
Again - Good report!
Thank you, Bob. The safari was a fantastic time! Even now, almost 4 weeks after the hunt, I can't get my mind out of the bush and my hands often search for my rifle! Neither of us are keen on the idea of shooting game in a fenced in area - too much like shooting "fish in a barrel" and not...
Scouting around that area we found these odd logs... no, those aren't logs! Those are Giraffe legs. There wasn't any sign of the rest of the animal – just the legs. I believe there was a giraffe taken a week or three prior and they removed the legs for ease of transport.
To give you an idea of our positions yesterday and this morning please see below:
A – Where we were the day before.
B – Previous Bushbuck sighting.
C – Where we parked this morning.
D – Where crossed over the top.
We scurried down from the hill and across the dam. Coming around through the trees we start looking in the grass. In the photo you can see the large pale boulder up on the hill and the dead tree that I shot from just down and to the left of it.
Jeff and Dana: Day 10, morning.
(Friday, 27/7/2018)
(Oh... that dreadful alarm!)
“C'mon honey. Time to get up...” After hearing about how difficult the climb was to get to the area where we were able to see the Bushbuck, Dana decided to opt out this morning and let us guys put ourselves in...
Jeff and Dana: Day 9, morning.
(Thursday, 26/7/2018)
Ugghhhh! I think we drank a little too much last night... “Honey, where's the ibuprofen??”
Breakfast was relatively quiet and fluids were being consumed in quantity. The crepuscular Bushbuck aren't going to wait for us! So we get moving.
We...
It was a fantastic time! You're welcome and thank you!
If it were easy I wouldn't have enjoyed it so much and I firmly believe trophy appreciation is directly related to earning it.
There are two more days for us to report on. Don't go away just yet! ;):sneaky:
Jeff and Dana: Day 8
(Wednesday, 25/7/2018)
Redemption
Mmmmmmm... Strrrretchhhhhhh... and a smile creeps across my face as I open my eyes. I can't possibly think about trying to top yesterdays triple. But I can try! Ed and I both have tripled at least one day this safari – awesome!
At...
Dana seems to prefer Jack Daniels with her water - frozen water that is! :D Barman::D Beer Bottle:
She also has taken a liking to shooting my guns... and would happily shoot game given the chance...
I just have to make sure those two things don't get mixed because I can't run as fast and as...
Lots of good techniques mentioned here and the photo above is excellent.
I am not proficient at much of anything but I do like to shoot so I offer my 2 cents as food for thought.
While my .300 Win Mag isn't what I consider a "big bore" rifle, at 7.5 lbs all up shooting weight including a 1 lb...
Jeff and Dana: Day 7, morning
(Tuesday, 24/7/2018)
*Alarm going off*
It was getting easier to get up now as the hunt seems to have gotten over a rough patch and things are starting to happen.
At breakfast we decided we were going to head out and try to find an elusive Bushbuck. We loaded up...
I was thinking this morning that I forgot the first attempt at a Hyena. Thank you for the segue to add this! :)
Jeff and Dana: Day 5, Evening
(Sunday, 22/7/2018)
As it turns out, the day before - the day we had a picnic in the bush - Mike asked if we wanted to try the Hyena bait with a...
Thank you. This was actually the 4th bull I had seen. The first one I had a misfire. The second one I took a hail Mary shot as it went up through a narrow pass between two hills amongst trees. The third was very distant glimpse. I have a hard time remembering all of the incidents during the...
Jeff and Dana: Day 6,
(Monday, 23/7/2018)
I'm not sure how this particular morning went but most assuredly Dana and myself dragged our bodies out of bed and to the dining hall for breakfast!
We piled into the truck and made our way to the far Northeastern part of the property. We hiked up and...
Thank you! Adding to what Ed already said, this is about as o'natural as it gets. Sometimes we had LUCK on our side (Laboring Under Correct Knowledge) and what was presented to us couldn't be passed up. Maybe the trophy didn't quite make Rowland Ward criteria but the effort used to acquire the...
Jeff and Dana: Day 5,
(Sunday, 22/7/2018)
We wakened to a change in the weather – again. It is a bit colder today and the skies look a bit threatening. Nevertheless we make our way to the dining hall for some well needed breakfast and coffee.
The morning plan was to continue the search for the...
