    Blaser R8 in 458 Lott

Hi Green Chile, Opinion of course, but I wouldn't open up your wood stock to accommodate a thicker barrel, just to take to Africa. The biggest matter is probably sheer weight, as guys above have pointed out. I'm thinking that you'll be much better off getting a heavy/steel receiver synthetic...

    Blaser R8 in 458 Lott

What scope do you use? I have the same setup, but also have a rather heavy low power Zeiss V8, that I’m a little concerned about rattling with Lott recoil. Thanks!

    2023 SCI Convention in Nashville

I know this thread is dated, so there is an update, which most everyone knows I’m sure….. Nashville for 10 more years. Indy (2026?) would have been very convenient, but deciding to stay in Nashville is a very good move. Keep hoping I’ll run into Carrie Underwood some year.

Saw that one. Went there to size up and order a Sporter, and they showed off that one (pretty sure) as well. Stunning work, as you’d expect. Maybe in the $45,000 range?

    Mauser 66

Had two, sold one. I’m not sure, but I think it was a very early model, as it didn’t have the bolt release button on the right side. Finally figured out (nothing about it in the manual) how to release the bolt with it extended, but what a pain. The 66 I kept of course has the button and is...

Need some knowledge on a Dakota

I’ve got a little of everything…. Blasers, Rigbys, Mausers new and old, pre 64s, Krieghoffs, a Purdey, Dakotas….eh, who cares. But mention them only to compare the Dakotas with the rest of the fleet. They are superb rifles, no question about it, and easily fit in with the rest. It’s been a...

OEM stocks cracking and or breaking

Hi Shootist, Mine’s in .416 and it seemed like the wood used was rather low grade. As a preemptive measure, I bought the MacMillan composite stock and it’s been a wonderful ever since. Giving up the wood before any real problems is pretty obsessive for sure, but now it’s a workhorse. FWIW.

Went to London earlier this month to order a Purdey. Dropped in on Rigby to get a look at their operation. Craftsmen in the shop working hard, and a lady on a microscope looking device to do engraving. Marc Newton came out of his office to introduce himself, and it was nice to finally attach...

Knowing several people who’ve worked as military attachés and now in the Dept of State gives a whole other perspective of things compared to what’s on TV. More than a few Gulf states especially, don’t like factions over there any more than we do. But, what’s given publicly for worldwide...

.458 Lott recoil is no joke

Found it…. 2217 fps at the muzzle. I was a tight end, and got hit by a linebacker quite often, so the brain damage is probably already done.

.458 Lott recoil is no joke

Hi Forrest, Used a Zeiss scope and maybe 2 or 3 rounds in the magazine, which brought the grand total to about 10.5 lbs. Swift 500gr breakaway solids, not sure on the velocity…not written on the box, so I need to dig. Definitely true on your accuracy point, I was not impressive at the range...

.458 Lott recoil is no joke

Sorry about the necro of this old thread; I’m enjoying the topic and the replies. One important thing I’ve found when shooting a Lott is stance. I was coached about this, so it’s certainly no brain power from me. The idea is to open up your body to the target, ie shoot more “shotgun-like”...

R8 3 accidental discharges, human error or?

So glad for this discussion and for all of your inputs. I’ve had two R8s for quite a while, but never used either under any hunting pressure or duress. Have to “chair fly” (aviator’s term for practice) both and see how close I’ve come to an AD/ND.

    Transitioning To A Blaser R8 - A Two Months / 500 Rounds Review

Yeah, and Swaro has an especially nice rail with teeth to help prevent any movement. Problem for U.S. market is that even though Swaro, Zeiss, and S&B have very nice integral rail scopes, they haven’t caught on well here for some reason. So, ordering, waiting, etc. Certainly not impossible...

Good work showing those. Had the exact thing happen to me with a Zeiss V6 scope on an R8. Unfortunately the eurooptic guy apparently didn't know, but gave me bad advice anyway on which rings to buy. They're standup people and they made it right, so no foul there. If a scope does bottom out...

Hey Mark, OK to veer a little? Just wondering if you ever had your CZ worked on, or if you’ve been using it as is from the factory? I have one (I think) of the last .416 Rigbys made by them, but the guys in Colorado seem really booked solid with their CZ improving work. So, just wondering if...

Is the CZ 550 Gone or Not?

Got an R8 steel receiver, along with some Selous big bore barrels. What a setup, a beautiful gun. So what’s my obsession? Getting the 550 (.416) smoothed out, synthetic stock, Timney, Warne rings for the 550, and parts for a Model 70-like safety. Must be the fear of losing the R8 in airline...

Is the CZ 550 Gone or Not?

Totally agree….the big bores gave CZ a lot of positive notoriety. At the show, it seemed like everyone had a 6.5, 7, or 300 super duper chambering of some kind in their product lines. The pistol gripped metal frames have made that jump from the bench to hunting, many in that $1100-2000 range...

Is the CZ 550 Gone or Not?

Spoke with a CZ rep at the NRA convention in Indy, concerning the CZ 600 and Africa chamberings. First, he explained that the 550 was made entirely on old machinery that they wanted get rid of, and modernize to the now CZ 600 production machines. As for the big bores, he said “they’re coming...

And if you go with a Selous barrel and a steel receiver, the weight skyrockets. I’m not complaining at all, though. Have those barrels in .308, .300, and .375 and the recoil is far lower than anything else I own. It’s a beast, so a long mountain stalk wouldn’t be fun, otherwise it’s...
