    450/400 3” DGX performance

These two 400 grain Hornady DGX bullers were retrieved from a buffalo bull. About 2160 fps, from bench set up. The first shot on the buff was with a 375 and it was badly placed. The buff took off and the follow up guy put in two rounds from his 450/400 double. The buff continued on it’s way a...

What do you think of the new Rigby Shikari?

The new Shikari is up on Rigbys web site. I saw the prototype in the white when it was touring South Africa early last year and I had mixed feelings. It is certainly looking more the piece now, very well finished. A few of my friends have opted for it and have orders in. What do you think so far?

    Kreighoff Classic

My friend is considering buying a second hand Kreighoff Classic 470. It looks in solid condition and shoots well. It is pretty basic, completely unadorned, but there is a charm to that. The LOP seems a little short, but I confess I do not know how to measure LOP on a double (would appreciate a...

    Holland and Holland today

On my resent trip to London I popped in at Beretta and took a look at the little Holland and Holland enclave in their shop. It is small, not a patch on it’s former glory, but it is there. Apparently the gun room is next door, but I didn’t get a chance to visit that, will do next time. Taking a...

    Be Calm

These days there are so many reasons to feel anger, disappointment and frustration. I am not even going to list them, the object of this thread is not to get your blood up even more, but to give you some relief, as I have found. The biblical part of it is easy to read, but hard to get to grips...

    Improving my shooting

Hi all, as you know I shoot double rifles mostly, and I really enjoy our monthly Big Bore competition. Problem is, I was not good at it and it was really frustrating. Being a time as well as accuracy event, much as real life situations would be, I had the tendency to rush and snatch - result...

    Non-hunting holidays

Just come back from a week on Mafia Island off the Tanzanian coast. Nice place, coconuts and palms etc. Highlight was seeing a whale shark, the water is bath warm there, even I can tolerate a dip. Downside is those eco type places attract liberals, green sandals everywhere.

    The ultimate buffalo hunt

We have seen many posts on first buffalo hunt questions, best value buff hunt questions, a hunt in this country or that, but what I am asking here, and putting my own wish list up rhetorically, is the ULTIMATE! So obviously it will be subjective and it may borrow snippets from what you all have...

    Airport hopping not fun

The wife and I are sitting in Nairobi airport waiting for a connection to Dar, delayed nearly two hours and counting. Yes, it is after midnight. Stick to your direct flights to ORT guys, African airports are not fun.

So what is it about hunting?

What is it about this pursuit, this sport, this way of life that grabs your interest and keeps your interest? It is more than just interest, it is passion, devotion, longing, all strong feelings. I think it is a lot of things, for some the beautiful animals themselves, others the rifles and to...

    Craddock kudu charge

This was a short biltong hunt to the picturesque area of Craddock in the Eastern Cape. With just two hunting days our group of five descended from Maclear, Cape Town and East London with high expectations and excitement to give it our best shot, so to speak. This was my first chance at kudu so...

    Marlin 336 jammed

Our Marlin 336 is jammed with the lever down and the action back. There are four rounds in the tube, it looks like one of them has come partially back to be fed but wasn't in position and the case bent a bit when I tried to close the action. Can this be fixed by removing the lever pivot pin or...

Off to Craddock for a kudu

We are about to head off from Maclear to Craddock for a three day biltong hunt. Springbok, fallow dear, reedbuck and springbuck are possibilities, let's see. Just wish my Ruger No1 was ready, but we will use a Sako 85 Barvarian in 30-06.

I am partial to good wood on a gun stock, and whether actually seeing it in person, or seeing a photo you just know - that is spectacular. So whether it is your own stock, or someone who has posted a pic on AH that needs to be recollected, lets see what you have. Here is one from Westley...

    Spurs

No, not the bronco tamers, but heel spurs. Many years ago I jumped down from a railway carriage and landed on the ballast, splitting the cartliege under the left heel. It was blinding flash painful and took a full year to be able to walk properly. Now all these years later a heel spur has...

What makes a perfect buffalo hunt?

Buffalo are special, they are iconic. They are dangerous and they epitomise the real Africa. Their smell is unique and they look proper, as dangerous game should, with those menacingly curved horns that can toss you to the tree tops with ease and that boss that will crush you when you land. Yes...

    Tiger Fish and Land Rovers

Every year our Hamba Bamba group enters four teams in the Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament in October and a few of us try to get up there beforehand to investigate tackle and tactics. Up nice and early with the dawn having a half-hearted attempt in the east, sitting in a canvas chair with a cup of coffe and the subtle morning smells. I can only speak of Zimbabwe but this may be true of South Africa and elsewhere. I am seeing an increase in the number of young people wanting to enter the PH and guides profession. Long trousers?

I have switched back and forth between wearing long trousers or shorts, both have their pro's and con's. Double-up

Many here own two, or even more double rifles. The category I am interested in here is those folks who have a heavier double for DG, and a lighter one for PG, and I know of at least five of you who have gone that route. The light double has always been around, I handled a vintage Rigby rising...

    Budget double rifles

I am frequently asked by the local hunters here what they can get for US$10 000 or less? They are talking new and understand that there would then be the cost to land it in Zimbabwe, which by the time the dust has settled is 45% on top. Most want a DG capable (legal) double which is 375 minimum...

    Who to take?

Some of you come to Africa to hunt on your own because you prefer it that way, but several come as a group or at least two of you. Another Johannesburg rifle bargain

I also found a Heym 375 H&H bolt rifle going for R141 000. Compared to the Rigby 450 we talked of before and a VC 375H&H the Heym is not only much lower price, but seems to have better finish and definitely the best balance of the three. This is at Safari and Outdoor Johannesburg.
