I love photography as well and on both my trips to Africa I have carried a full size Nikon DSLR on my back in the field every day while hunting. I also use the camera in my phone.
Yes the DSLR and lens is heavy, but this is part of what I like to do. So take it and use it on your hunt.
The trick...
I have ended up owning three 17HMR's
1. Sako Quad - Accurate. Feeds well from the 5 shot magazine not so good from the 10 shot magazine. Option to get additional caliber barrels -22lr & 22mag.
2. Anschutz 1517 classic - The most accurate rifle of the three (1/4 to 1/2" groups at 50yds) with...
I have three .25 cals - .257 Roberts , .25-06 and .257 Weatherby.
The .25 cals suit a lot of our Australian game from pigs up to deer - they all have have performed well.
As long as you place your shots of course.
Day 10 – Continued - More Bushbuck
We drove back up to the top of the ridge ready for more glassing.
We parked the bakkie in the shade of a large row of green bush and Mitchell stayed back at the bakkie cleaning up my Warthog. Victor and I walked over the edge of the hill to glass for...
Day 10
The next morning, we were up well before sunrise packing for a day trip down to the coast.
Chris and I are going to hunt for bushbuck today. The property we were heading to was approximately two hours’ drive from the lodge and according to Victor it had good numbers of bushbuck. Chris...
I also use the FG knot but it took me a while to learn to tie it.
Last year I saw this video below on the "Pinky Method" of tying the FG.
I use this now. Its quick and can be tied in the boat while rocking about a little.
Also works well when you need to use a light main line to heavy leader...
Day 9
The next morning we were up early well before sunrise and drove to the Addo Elephant National Park. All of us were indulging in the tourist thing at the National Park today.
So if your not into National Park images of animals then wait for the next instalment that is Day 10. We will be...
Seems strange. I have a half dozen hunting rifles coated in Cerakote and none have ever chipped.
My Win .280 AI has been Cerakoted for over 12 years. It has bruises and marks on the coating from use. Maybe who ever applied the Cerakote did not prepare the surface well enough or sprayed it on too...
Day 8 – Afternoon Hunt
Both Chris and I had been keen to hunt the common duiker. So Victor said that he and Arnold had an area where there was a blind and a pile of old oranges from the local farm dumped across from the blind next to a water hole. He said there were often duikers and other...
Day 8
The next morning we were up early well before sunrise. Today we were going to look for a Nyala bull. Nyala are the next animal on my list of spiral horned antelope. Victor said that we were travelling over to the back of the property to an area that the Nyala love to hide in.
So we filled...
Day 7
The next morning we were up early again before sun rise, sucking down some coffee to get our buzz on for the day. It was another cool morning. But today it was above freezing and the temperature was much milder than the previous days. Today we were packing up and heading back to the Karoo...
Day 6 - Afternoon hunt
Pig Hunting – A passion of mine
Back in Australia a lot of my hunting time is spent chasing wild pigs. We have no seasons or bag limits on them. So long as you have permission from the farmer to hunt on his land they are fair game. A lot of the time they are in pest...
Day 6
We had a bit of a sleep in this morning until 6am. Victor had said that we did not have to get up really early as the Klipspringer would wait until the sun was out before they ventured out to warm up.
So we had a leisurely breakfast in the lodge by the fire washed down with a couple of...
Day 5 – Afternoon Hunt
After we had refueled we were back in the bakkie along the flats for an afternoon of hunting.
There was game crossing the road everywhere, monkeys, warthog, wildebeest, red hartebeest.
Warthog
Red Hartebeest
We drove along the flats for a while until we could see...
Day 5
The next morning we were up early well before sunrise. A few heart starter coffee’s had me firing on all cylinders again ready for another day of hunting. Today’s plan was like the previous day, was to travel back into the mountains looking for plains game.
We were looking for both large...
Day 4 - Afternoon Hunt
After lunch we headed back into the mountains to look for Blue Wildebeest and Gemsbok. Two of the classic African plains game animals. We had left Mitchell back at the skinning shed to finish removing the cape from my Eland. We had picked up Donovan again to give us a hand...
Day 4
Up at 5am this morning for another light breakfast and a couple of heart starter coffee’s. Today we packed a small bag of clothes because we were driving a number of hours to another hunting property in the Camdeboo mountains of the Eastern Cape. The plan was to spend three or four days...
Day 3
Up early again today with a light breakfast and the obligatory heart starter coffee. This morning I am off chasing Steenbuck again. There was a solid frost on the ground this morning and I was shivering like a wet puppy. Africa is certainly a lot colder than I thought it would be. More...
