So top contenders at the moment continue to be 9.3x62, 300H&H, or .350 Rigby NE. I have pondered the .300 for a few years but for some reason I’ve never been a .30 cal person.

So today i acquires a rather handsome 1909 that’s been mildly sporterized. Luckily no modifications have been done to the metal. I currently have a .275 Rigby and .404 rifle. I want to build a middle of the road cartridge leaning abit more on the larger bore side of things. I’m looking for ideas...

what would be a good source to learn more about how early Rigby Mausers were built? Pics, parts used, barrel lengths, etc? For example would a Mauser 7x57 have been rebarreled for .275 or merely a remark of a factory Mauser barrel?

Definitely a knowledge drop! I may go with the Redding for now and I’m going to look into the custom die once my rifle is built.

Hornady of course comes in the cheapest and I’ve had no complaints with their die sets before but would I be any better served with Redding or RCBS?

I spoke with MRC. Besides fire blue of the trigger and some smaller components the conversation seemed to point in them building my way as long as i don’t mind waiting. And by that would involve me sourcing a front sight, preferred express leaf sight, and barrel band. Given the financial costs...

I’m actually planning to call Montana Rifle this afternoon to talk custom options. Prices seem phenomenal if the reliability is there. I’m unfamiliar with them although seeing they offer a .275 Rigby option I’m inclined to as I’d love to have another .275 Rigby rifle in the safe

I’m looking for more of a working rifle. It’s primary quarry will be bear but with African plans as well. My vision is a 21” barreled rifle with express sights and possibly a claw mount system for the optic. Blued/fire blued trigger/accents. No engraving, M70 style safety with a drop belly...

I should also mention I have access to a Columbian Mauser as well that a friend would be willing to sell. I understand they were designed for a slightly larger cartridge length than some other large rings.

I strongly considered using my M70 .375 for the project but the Mauser action seems more proper

Ok I think I’m gonna go with this. I was also looking at the Sako rifles but I much prefer the 3-position safety. Slightly shortening the barrel may balance abit better and shed some of the weight.
