I would stick to the 30-06 for the following reasons:
1. Variety of loads - if you reload you can load anything from a 130 grain for varmint hunting up to 220 grain for bigger animals in bushveld conditions.
2. Availability of factory ammuniton- you could walk into any firearm store in South...

I have recently bought a second hand .243 for my 9 year old son to use on Springbuck, Impala and Blesbuck.
The rifle shoots like a dream and the action is as smooth as butter.
