One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

Tough choice, but I’d choose my .416 Ruger. I shot my only buff with it and it performed perfectly. Ain’t broke, don’t fix it. However, my next buff hunt will be with a #1 in .458 Lott, jut because I want to.

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

Either one will fulfill your needs. I have a .416 Ruger Alaskan and it is one of my favorite rifles. I used it to take the buff in my avatar.

One gun or two? On safari

A .375 will serve you well on everything. Take 300gr TSX, Swift AF, Wodleighs or TBBC along with about ten solids and you’ll be good to go. However, and this is just my quirkiness, I like to take two rifles, just because I want to. I like using my rifles and I can look at them and think of the...

    Financially ready for a Safari?

Had a mortgage that was almost paid off. Had a car payment. Never have credit card debt. Spent about 60% of a year’s family income. This included taxidermy and shipping. I didn’t finance any of it. I did save for several years, just for it. Near maxed contributions to retirement. I was never of...

    Reloading for Dangerous Game

In my approximately 45 yrs of hunting, I’ve only shot one animal with a factory load. That said, if after DG and with minimal reloading experience, I would choose factory loads. Once you have several years of reloading experience and know that your methods work with the utmost reliability, only...

    300 PRC

Congratulations on your first safari and welcome to AH. I really can’t add to anything that’s already been said. The .375 is considered minimum on DG for a reason. The .300PRC should do a great job on PG. I think you were wise to step up from the 7mm.

    Why Buy A Blaser K95?

I’ve long been a single shot fan: #1’s, Encores, Contenders…. But the K95 is an exquisite firearm. I handled one and almost drooled on it.

Age of first African hunting trip

    56. I’d wanted a cape Buffalo since I was 15 but never considered it possible. When I divorced my first wife, I set two goals: Hunt buffalo at 55 (well I booked it at 55) and retire before I was 60. Accomplished both.

    460 Weatherby Magnum Scope

I’ve only shot a .460 on one occasion. It had the Pendleton brake. Recoil was still “snappy“ but not as bad as the .378 Wby I once owned with no brake. The .378 wore an old Redfield Widefield with the TV screen ocular lens. It touched me a few times. For your .460, I’d either go with Leupold or...

    Preparing for 1st Safari

Welcome to AH and congratulations on both your engagement and your first safari. There is nothing like your first safari. I did my first safari, to Zimbabwe, at age 56 and weighed about 275# at the time. For about three months prior, I walked 2-3 miles each day. For boots, I wore Rocky Outbacks...

So, I Was In The Loading Room Today...

I finally hit the reloading room Wednesday for the first time since October. My wife had a stroke and I’m now seven weeks out from having a knee replaced. Fortunately, we’re both doing well. The range opens March 1st so I need to get busy. I cranked out 100 .223 and prepped some 9.3x74R brass...

    .223 for Steinbok, Duiker, Klipspringer?

My only experience with a T10 animal was a steinbok. I used a .30/06 with a 180gr Barnes TSX. I hit behind the shoulder but hit the opposite shoulder. My taxidermist had some work to do. If I get a chance at another T10, I’ll definitely hold further back with whatever rifle I’m carrying.

240gr 30-06 - how would you use it?

Aa I’m an old fart and my memory might be playing havoc on me, but didn’t the original Barnes produce a 250gr .30 cal bullet? I think I remember reading Jack O’Connor doing an Alaskan bear hunt with them.

Is Blaser Trying To Price Themselves Out Of The American Market???

I just joined the Blaser clan in late ‘22. It was a financial stretch but managed it. I soon added two additional barrels and scope mounts at the time. I haven’t regretted the decision. I’ve been thinking of adding a .223 barrel and bolt head plus another scope mount. I recently looked at the...

    165 or 180 grain bullet for 3006

To my knowledge, the GS weren’t bonded. The first version had a heel crimp and a harder bottom core with a softer front core oon top. The second version had something similar to Hornady’s Interlock, a ring protruding into the core to keep it from slipping. The third and newest version has a...

What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

I’ve only been on two safaris and I think the only thing I used it for was to open an obstinate protein bar wrapper.. iMO, you’ll get more use out of a Swiss Army knife or multi-tool than a hunting knife.

9.3 X62 brass and bullet powder recommendation

I had some issues with PPU brass. About half of each bag wouldn’t fit, we’re tight or would only go into the shell holder at a certain angle. No problem with Lapua brass. I ran a penetration test with 250gr Barnes TTSX, 286gr Swift and 270gr Speer. The Barnes penetrated the best.

    Buying Ammo in Africa

It’s been ten years, but when I went to Zimbabwe, they counted my ammo on arrival. One of my rifles was a .375 HH. My PH’s camp rifle was a .375 HH. I left him a box. Too Much Gun?

My first safari was for buffalo plus PG. Unless someone going to Africa, lacks hunting experience, I’ve never really seen the logic in doing a PG hunt first. I wanted a buffalo since I was 15. If you want to hunt buff, go for it. If you do opt to do a PG hunt first, talk to your outfitter about...

    Hornady

I wouldn’t call Hornady bullets “bad”. As they produce a variety of designs, you have to be selective as to which you choose for the appropriate application. I will however say that the Interlocks at high velocity at closer ranges are extremely destructive. I don’t have any experience with the...
