Nice strawman you set up there. Be a shame if somebody had to put a match to it. Government involvement in markets always makes the products/services offered in those markets less affordable, not more. Pouring money into a market will serve only for those receiving the money to bid up prices...

The only other bullet mfg I can *always* find bullets from is Hornady. I've got loads worked up for Nosler, Swift, Lapua, and Woodleigh for my rifles. There's just none of that stuff out there, at least not when i'm looking.

My wife is the same. When that LH MRC 404J came up at gunbroker, I went to talk to her about it. "It's like 10k, right?" she asked. "Oh heavens no, it's only 2500." "Oh, ok, you're getting it then, right?" Headed to RSA in August, I was planning on doing all Euro mounts. "You should get...

    Load info for Browning BLR

@MarkCZ I'm pushing Speer Gold Dot 168 gr at around 2880 fps on 47.2 gr CFE223, COAL is the standard 2.80" for 308 Win. My 308 does have a 24" barrel, so that's probably helping a little. If you're worried that's too hot, back off to about 43.2, then do a ladder in 0.5 gr increments to 47.2...

Help me decide: which Plains Game Bullet for my 7mm-08?

Don't worry much about "flat." Nearly all modern bottle neck cartridge loads are within a few inches of each other out to around 250 or 300 yards, especially with a 200 yard zero or using Maximum Point Blank Range. Since you are headed to Africa to hunt multiple species, keep it simple and zero...

a 9.5 twist will stabilize all but the longest 175 gr bullets - NABLR won't stabilize in 9.5 well, but a Partition, SGK, Grand Slam, or Swift would.

Help me decide: which Plains Game Bullet for my 7mm-08?

100% agree. any 7mm is just begging to use the high SD 170+ gr bullets. if OP is going with the lighter bullets in the 140 gr class, I'd recommended bonded premiums or monos like Hammer or Barnes, if he can find any. I chrono'd Hornady's 139 gr American White Tail at a skosh over 2900 fps...

    Black owned hunting safari businesses?

As per the article I was reading, USAFA attrition for white cadets is about 20%, and they somehow believe that the 33-ish% attrition rate of black cadets is attributable to a lack of support for them once they get in. I'd suggest that's pure rubbish. In their rush to get more black cadets...

Need help, Load discrepancy Swift vs Hodgdon

You'd be catching as much crap from everybody on this board if you'd asked about white-only outfitters and PHs. I've never met a more color-blind group of people in my life as hunters. "Tell me your stories. Show me your guns. Do you hand load? What's your pet load?" Skin color shouldn't...

I think that's optimistic, even for a 7mm RM. 2750 with that AF should get you to about 550 or 600 yards at 5k feet elevation, and around 800 yards at really high altitude 10k feet or so - and still be right at 2k fps

GRT shows same starting pressure for swift, talked to them about it on their discord channel because my MVs weren't anywhere near what GRT and QL say it should be, like a couple hundred fps slower than predicted 10k starting pressure is just wrong. My LD with A Frames shows them with an...

    7mm Rem Mag

That's not likely a stabilization issue. A 9.5 twist is fast enough to stabilize all but the longest 175 gr bullets like Accubond LR, TSX, and Hammer bullets longer than the 160 gr Hammer Hunter. Berger has an online twist calculator if you're interested.

    7mm Rem Mag

My 280AI is pushing 175 gr Nosler Partitions at ~2740 fps. I would recommend any 7mm 175 gr bullet in the 2700 - 2800 fps MV neighborhood and a BC of maybe .45 or higher. I'm a big fan of Norma Oryx. Great bullet, but terrible BC in both the 156 & 170 gr. I had really good groups with the...

Yes, it's safe for contact with skin. Truth be told, pretty much all of the Pyrethrin (it's a flower, used to be huge plantations of it in parts of Africa) analogs* are safe for human contact. Hornady makes 2 Superformance loads - one with CX, the other with SST, both showing nearly 3100 fps MV on the box. No mention made of the BC on the CX bullet. Refer back to my "can we please stop talking about flat-shooting cartridges." Everything with a sufficiently high BC (say low 0.4x to...

    Hornady ELD-X

I'm looking at Hornady's 11th edition manual (I have 9 and 10 as well) - they don't make a 150 gr ELD-X, though they do make a 155 gr ELD Match. Looking at Hornady's published data, and using MPBR (4" vital zone) for either the 155 gr ELD Match (210 yd zero, MV 2900 fps) or 178 gr ELD-X (198 yd...

    Scope Setting for Cape Buffalo?

Haven't hunted buff yet, but I can speak to hunting in the thick stuff. All the rifles I use for the thick stuff in Louisiana have nothing larger than 2X magnification on the bottom, and I very rarely increase the magnification. For close in shooting, there's no substitute for FOV, IMO. And...

    Hornady ELD-X

There is a non-trivial effect of Coriolis firing E/W. Firing West against the earth's rotation, target is rising with respect to the flight path of the bullet, so unaccounted for, shots will be low. Firing due east, the target is falling away, so shots will tend to be high. Coriolis has zero...

300 WSM, 300 WM, or 300 PRC for Freestate Plains Game

Lots of guys like shooting heavy bullets. If 180 gr 30 cal is somebody's thing, 300 WSM is fine. If they like 200+, then pretty much every 30 magnum is a better choice.
  50. sgt_zim

300 WSM, 300 WM, or 300 PRC for Freestate Plains Game

I'm not a huge fan of 300 WSM. With its short neck, it isn't as suitable for 200+ gr bullets as the other 30 cal magnums. Bullet run-out is a thing, after all.
