    .223/5.56x45 ammunition question

I just figured I'd share my hunting story from this year. My girlfriend (She's sharp and learns extremely rapidly, as in, she had never shot anything but a .22 before, and I had her making accurate and rapid hits on a 25 yard target using my pump gun and 12ga slugs in about 3 hours of shooting...

Canted reticle in a Swarovski scope

When you buy a Swarovski, kahles, S&B, Leupold Mk6 or mk8, etc, it's more than a product. It's the reputation of that company. They tend to back it. I'd not let anyone but Swarovski touch it.

    New Vortex/Hornady Ammo

It's only a matter of time before this isn't a 4/1 thing. I mean, at the rate technology is going, would it really be that hard to do with a .30 caliber projectile in 5-10 years time?

    Two scope setup?

This is an example of why I prefer a LPV over a RDS. I took this picture WELL AFTER sunset. You must excuse the potato I used to take the photo, obviously resolution of the optic is not this poor. I took the photo to emphasize how a LPV on 1x with an illuminated reticle works VERY well when the...

    Why the 30 Caliber Magnums?

Chuck Hawks has his own opinions... That said, the .30 magnums are popular because that caliber has spawned some amazing bullets. So what did wildcatters and companies do? They took amazing bullets and made them go faster. I think they are popular because their development was economical. It's...

    Optic Overkill?

It's not so much overkill as iti s going to be annoying as hell. A) It's more weight to lug around. B) with the lowest power being 5x, it's going to suck for things up close. C)If you ever choose to set it at 25x, I hope you're shooting off of a bag, or sled, at least a bipod with a rear bag...

    Two scope setup?

Far too many people will compensate for crap glass by "adding x's" to the equation. "For $600, I can get 4x more power with this brand vs. $600 for that brand giving me 4x less...." is a common sentiment. I cannot count the number of scopes I've looked through at the local shooting range that...

    Two scope setup?

Red dot sights, I would not like for this. 1) Light transmission is far inferior to an actual scope 2) You are not shooting from under a vehicle bumper, etc. You don't need a super super super forgiving eyebox. 3) You can buy something like a MK6, K16i, Z6i that will do 95% of what a RD will...

    Federal trophy bonded tip

This bullet is barrier blind, accurate, and a very solid performer in the LE arena. What my concern is, and maybe you guys (you might be the BEST guys to answer this...) can help me with something...does that nickel plated jacket foul the bore? If so, how does it (or does it not...) clean up? I...

    Two scope setup?

I'm waiting for the Kahles version, personally. I hope they field one. Much prefer rheostat to the ocular doodicker Swarovski likes.

Any Experience With Federal Fusion Ammunition For Plains Game?

Keep in mind that the Fusion/Gold Dot line is only going to penetrate about 16-22" in tissue. It was designed for killing deer and people. Not big African animals.

Any Experience With Federal Fusion Ammunition For Plains Game?

I am a huge fan of fusion. It is extremely accurate in every gun I've used it in, the most impressive being a group measuring just under 1.1" ctc. 10 shots, 100 yards, using a 4x night force on my 16" chrome lined m4 type rifle with gov. Profile barrel. Terminally, it's killed a lot of animals...

Slug hunting Plains Game and Dangerous Game?

Respectfully,re: bear and Alaska The people I spoke of are law enforcement and have killed many Grizzly. One dept. Uses 3"brenneke black magic, the other uses 2-3/4" brenneke classic magnum (the old rottweil load, basically). Both have used it to very good effect numerous times. Again that...

Slug hunting Plains Game and Dangerous Game?

I'd not take a 12ga after a croc, hippo, elephant, rhino, or buffalo, but against a Bushbuck, Lion, or Leopard, why would it be a poor choice?

Need some solid dad advice from experienced hunter dads

I am not a parent, nor have I hunted Africa. I have, however, shot with and helped a lot of people. The classical mistake is to ask more experienced people what to do with less experienced/no experience people, regarding their firearm. This is to say, I have helped many women dump the terrible...

    Shotgun Cleaning?

Don't use it until it breaks. I have NEVER broken one, and I've used the snot out of them. They are cheap...buy a new one before it gets to that point! I never noticed any scoring of the bore from the brush, and I'm pretty darn OCD about such. You gotta thing, this thing was made for mild steel...

    Shotgun Cleaning?

Stout rod tipped with a "Tornado" cleaning brush. You have a TON of lead on the walls of that bore. I get piles of shavings out of Benelli's when I clean them this way, and that's a mirror-smooth chrome-lined hammer forged bore...

Smooth bore, Rifled, or Choke tubes

Smooth with a MOD or IC constriction. I have had VERY good accuracy from Brenneke as well as cheap "Slugger" Remington slugs from a MOD choke Benelli. As in, 2-3" groups at 50 yards, 1/2"-1" groups (center to center) at 25 yards. You can also shoot buck and all manner of things through this...

Slug hunting Plains Game and Dangerous Game?

Why not? Serious question. When you respond, please understand that the largest thing I've killed is a smallish deer, I've never been to Africa, and the closest I've come to a Lion is at the zoo, but based on what I know of terminal ballistics, what makes a 12ga repeating firearm loaded with...

    Slugs for Bear

A regular 2.75" Remington or Winchester foster slug barely manages 12-14" penetration in the lab in ballistic gel. I would never use this on an angry bear.

    Slugs for Bear

I know an Alaskan LEO who used to use an 870P for bear control. Brown bear, so pretty good size. They were issued 12ga Black Magic 3" Brenneke slugs, and he had zero complaints. He did indeed use the combo a number of times and it killed bear. He switched to a SCAR17 and TSX bullets because...

    .223/5.56x45 ammunition question

Velo, I respect your stance on it. For me, the choice of 5.56 came down to platform. I can use a 6.2# rifle that meets my requirements. The optic and suppressors I have are the same weight in .30 and 5.56. So that's a wash. However, about 7.5-8.2# is about the lightest 7.62x51 platform I can...

    .223/5.56x45 ammunition question

It works well. It's a very tough bullet. The gold dot 75gr does more damage, but the 64gr nosler is a good round, too. Just not as disruptive. They penetrate similarly. I sent a box out for testing and that was the impression I was given by the shooter.

    .223/5.56x45 ammunition question

I typically refuse to discuss my gear in public. For exactly this reason. But hunters with bolt guns are just as dumb and annoying sometimes. "Is that a five five six? Whooooweee! Those bullets is hot! Them casings burn so bad. I dunno what it is, but they is hot. They will scar you! Other...

    .223/5.56x45 ammunition question

I like to compare bullets in gel, as well as real animals. When they coincide with each other (which they always do in my experience), you know you have a winner. This Gold Dot 75gr stuff is a winner, in my book.

    .223/5.56x45 ammunition question

This is why I have standardized on the 75gr Gold Dot. That 69gr was probably a SMK, and they only penetrate 3-6" after striking autoglass, and retain VERY LITTLE WEIGHT. The 75gr Gold Dot penetrates over the FBI 12" minimum after striking AG, and retains significant amount of weight. Much better...

    .223/5.56x45 ammunition question

Just an update. A few friends of mine have now killed deer with 75gr Gold Dot. I saw one. The bullet entered right behind the left shoulder, and exited near the back of the (aft part) ribs on the right side. The result was a deer that ran a confused 50 yards while literally pumping blood out of...

    Deer Hunting with .223??

I have friends who have a .3030 and who also hunt with the .223. The deer they have shot travel shorter distance with the .223, so far. I do not have a .3030 to compare.

    Deer Hunting with .223??

My experience was that it took out several ribs on the way in, slushed a good portion of the left lung, blew a massive hole through the apex of the heart, and slushed a good part of the right lung, and took out a couple of ribs and left the deer, which bled out into its thoracic cavity in about...

    Deer Hunting with .223??

When you destroy the heart and lungs, you're not likely to have something travel 500 yards. Further, the .30-30 has been used for years on deer. It doesn't have a massive TSC.

    Deer Hunting with .223??

I am not a fan of headshots for that very reason. That said, I am failing to see how over 1/2" expansion and just shy of 2 feet of penetration in gel (usually equates to more in an animal because some of that is dead space/softer than the muscle gel simulates.) is not sufficient for a White...

    Deer Hunting with .223??

I feel comfortable taking anything but a Texas Heartshot with the .223. The ammo I use and have used is excellent, and I can put it where it needs to go with a confidence of +-2" in field conditions out to 100 yards, which is about as far as I can see where I am hunting due to terrain. That...

    Deer Hunting with .223??

No offense taken, at all. Here is an example of the precision I demand from myself. I was sitting, shooting over a sandbag, every similar to the position I will be in from the stand, with similar stability. This is a 100 yard cold, clean bore "first shot of the day". Because that's what will...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

OP, I greatly enjoyed your post!!! I have personally seen the same exact things happen in the "tactical world" when students bring their home-build (incompetently) or DPMS/Bushmaster bargain-basement type AR15/M4 to a multi-thousand round 3 day course. I have seen Eotech's die. I have seen...

    Rifle zeroing

I prefer a 100 yard zero, although I will readily admit that I hunt deer and paper and steel with my rifle. I find that the 100 yard zero provides good hits out to 200 yards with point and click interface, and within 100 yards, offset is not bad at all. In fact, I was able to hit, aiming...

    Monometal bullets for Deer

I am curious what kind of velocity a .220 Swift could achieve with a 50gr GMX. It would obviously hold together through the air because it's a monometal bullet, and I predict that it would shear the petals instantly upon hitting game at closer ranges, but may well be absurd at longer ranges.

    New ammunition from Swift

I'm not so sure, honestly. I equate this stuff to TBBC loadings, and it's right in line with them, even though SWIFT is a much smaller company than FEDERAL/ATK. Take also into account their claims about how meticulous they are about loading them, QA/QC, and their claim that they are...

    Should I replace my scope?

Eye relief on most modern 1-6 optics is fixed. My vcog did not vary, nor do I recall my k16i (kahles military version of z6i) varying. Eyebox did shrink thiugh, as you would expect.

    Should I replace my scope?

Well...on one hand, it has 30+ years of history working just fine... On the other. ..yeah, there are better scopes out nowadays. I don't think anyone could fault you for going either way, really, but I wouldn't eat Ramen noodles for a week to replace it, either.
