SOUTH AFRICA: Trip With Cabassa Safaris

I posted this on another well-known forum and is cut and paste as I didn't want to type it again. ;D =================== A buddy Mark, his wife Kara, and I got back from our third RSA hunt on Aug. 23rd. It’s taken me a bit of time to gather my thoughts and put them on “paper”. All in all, it...

Botswana bans sports hunters after Cecil killing

Botswana's stupidity is painting a desolate future for wildlife in the country. It all started with the elephant and the foolishness continues.

SOUTH AFRICA: Family Safari At Huntershill Safaris (If my wife & kids can do it so can yours!)

We were there for a buddy's handgun cape buffalo in Sep-Oct. 2012. Everything for the meal was served as a "course", no buffet style. I would have definitely liked your experience better. And it seemed like we hung out at the main lodge a lot just waiting to go hunting. It was fun to go check...

SOUTH AFRICA: Family Safari At Huntershill Safaris (If my wife & kids can do it so can yours!)

Cool to see that you and the crew had a great time. The time some buddies and myself were at Huntershill, it seemed too "organized" and structured to cater to high-dollar European "hunters". Not overly impressed with the skinners and their facility. Nor the eatery. Wayyyyyy to stuffy as...

    Handheld GPS

Yup, a Garmin Oregon 500(?). I had it clipped to my belt during all hunts and tracked most trails though I lost track of several unsuccessful hunts. I did take position settings from all "shot" positions, if possible, and a waypoint of each animal recovery. Makes it fun to look on Google Earth...

New USA requirements in addition to the form 4457

I think that you're a bit misguided in your distain for the NRA. It's the National RIFLE Association and has nothing specifically to do with hunting. They focus their efforts on domestic gun rights, via the 2nd Amendment and the protection of that right. I'm sorry that they don't fulfill your...

    SportEAR GhostStryke electronic ear plugs?

Yes, I've seen this before. Keep in mind, that it all depends on the frequency of the sound. Onc may say 30db but at what frequency? I've had no problem with mine on the range as they behave just like foam plugs when the electronics are "cut off" on muzzle blast. In regard to your SportEar...

    SportEAR GhostStryke electronic ear plugs?

I've not tried those particular SportEar brand electronic plugs. I did try the SoundGear brand http://www.soundgearhearing.com/products/hearing-protection-for-hunters-shooters but never could get the baffles inserts to seal in my ears. I've since ended up buy some Etymotic brand. They have...

Free Range Buffalo Hunt in South Africa

I like all of these offers but I will *never ever* hunt with a group that puts a different price on the various animal sizes. If I happen to find/hunt a bigger trophy during a hunt than someone else, I don't expect to pay more. Maybe I worked harder for it, or spent more time in the field for...

    Cordoba, Argentina Doves Shooting $2100...!!!

As you say, one has to compare apples to apples. Last I checked I didn't have 10's of thousands of kudu swarming my stand. Not the same at all. I did do a bird hunt in SA for franklin(sp?), guinea, and doves. It cost me the price of shells plus a daily rate. No limits. There has still been no...

    Cordoba, Argentina Doves Shooting $2100...!!!

I have hunted plains game in Africa and don't have a buff in my profile pic so maybe that's why I think that the dove hunting seems expensive as I don't have your deep pockets. Shooting birds that are considered a nuisance is the equivalent to paying to shoot hogs in TX. It's a bit tough to...

    Cordoba, Argentina Doves Shooting $2100...!!!

I've always been curious as to why it's so expensive to come shoot doves. At a rate of slightly less than $700/day, it seems a bit steep especially when that doesn't include the gun or licenses. I'm not trying to be a jerk as I'm really curious. I've always thought that a dove shoot like this...

    Home made indoor range

I did the same thing with my air rifle to get practice off of the shooting sticks. My sticks were three pieces of bamboo and a vacuum cleaner belt from Lowes. I 'stole' this idea from someone else who posted it. I also used the sticks to practice at the range with .22s, a CZ452 bolt action and...

    AFRICA INTRO

Very, very neat! The one thing that I might have changed is to eliminate shots of the fences in the videos. Those that have hunted RSA understand that the properties are fenced but can be huge(!), but to the uninitiated they'll think that you are hunting in someone's backyard. I've had to...

What is it like owning a game ranch in South Africa?

There was/is a beautiful property that was/is available for sale in the Eastern Cape that I would have jumped on in a second if I had the cash. It has a large expanse of diverse terrain, many housing units, a lake and lots of game. Absolutely gorgeous. I would have allowed a PH buddy to add some...

    Handgunning Africa? Dangerous Game?

I'm trying to remember the meet-and-greet cost and think it was around $140. There are several different folks that offer the service and some searching the forums will pop up some names. I used PHASA on my first trip and then used the Afton House on the second trip. No real reason that we...

    Greetings from Texas

Do a bit of research and you might find that a trip to Africa won't be quite as expensive as you might think. A guided elk, moose or bear hunt would probably cost more than a plains game hunt in Africa. Don't let the dream die. :)

    Handgunning Africa? Dangerous Game?

Not sure about answers to all of your specific questions but.. I've taken handguns on two trips to South Africa. A T/C Encore in .308 Win and a Ruger Super Redhawk in .480 Ruger. Neither time was there any hassle getting them in country. I've heard conflicting reports that the guns need to have...

Trophy Buffalo and Sable Hunt Available

We did. It was our first trip to RSA in 2009. We saw some of the sable there but we weren't after them at the time and given the 6 years since we saw them, they should be quite nice. My buddy took a great eland on the property. I spent most of my time on the east side of the lake were as my...

    recommend a hand held GPS

On our last trip, I took my Garmin 450 which is bit aged, given how fast technology changes. I kept locations of shot/downed animals and it even kept an elevation profile. I was able to pull the locations and see them on Google Earth to get an overhead view of where I was. It was fun.

I was going to post what I 'wanted' as my most valued trophy but since I've not, and probably won't, get to hunt it, it doesn't count. I think I'm with enysse and Rob44, any kudu that I've shot is my most valued trophy. I don't know what it is about these spiraled-horned beauties but I can't...

REPORT: My bad experience with Highveld Taxidermists/Oxi Logistics

Completely agree. Even if it wasn't directly their fault, since they made the recommendation, they should make an honest effort to help you get this fixed, or at least assist in getting the copy of the documents that you wanted. There are plenty of good, honorable outfitters in RSA that will be...

Good advice for first timers to Africa

Yeah, buddy, it can indeed feel overwhelming but I agree, the big payoff is when you get to the hunt and all goes smoothly. Planning the Next Plains Game Safari...

For the game you shot, you both had plenty of gun. I'm not a big fan of rifle recoil (handgun recoil is another story) so I chose to use a Remington 700 in .30-06 on both of my trips to RSA. The other guns used were a .480 Ruger in a Super Redhawk revolver and a T/C Encore handgun in .308 Win...

    What firearm should I use?

That's way plenty gun. I've taken two kudu with a .30-06 using 180 gr. premium bullet the longest being at 350 yrds. The black wildebeest was shot with a .308 Win using 150 gr. premium bullets out of a T/C Encore handgun. As others have mentioned, it's about shot placement. You should get...

    Cape Buffalo with a handgun

Looking forward to my attempt with a .480 Ruger handgun for buff in a couple years. Not a big fan of Steve and the show. Too many hunts and not enough excitement when taking the animals. Too far removed from folks that have to save for years to pay for their own hunts.

SOUTH AFRICA: Great Time Lousy PH

Sorry to hear about the poor PH situation. HUNTING Kudu

What Rocket says is spot on. Take what you have confidence in. I've taken my two kudu using a .30-06 using 180 gr. bullets, with the longest shot be just a bit under 350 yds. My gemsbok was taken with a .308 Win fired from a T/C Encore handgun. So it really doesn't take a cannon to be effective...

Rifle selection for South Africa plains game hunt

Most of the guys in RSA seem to have availability to most items though they might cost them more than they do us. We did leave some good LED flashlights and rechargeable batteries (along with spare ammo) with our PH's. They seemed to find good use for those, afterall who couldn't use a good...
