.470 NE versus .500 NE Felt recoil

As far as recoil I shot a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in .458 Win Mag W/some hot reloads (500 grain Hornady's at 2150fps) I could shoot 10 or more as long as I held the rifle tight to my shoulder from some type of standing rest and no bench rest. The .500 is a little stouter kick but manageable with...

.470 NE versus .500 NE Felt recoil

When you go to Africa you could be faced with a charge. It may be the animal you shoot, one someone else shot on another hunt and wounded or that animal could be pissed off just because you're in his neighborhood. Anything is possible in Africa. That .500 Nitro will be the best bet if you're...

Is there a sweet spot in the performance/cost spectrum for safari-grade rifles

AHR did the work on the CZ while it was still a .458 Win Mag. I could maybe send it back and let him do some more work on it however, I have sort of fell for the Merkel for the the simple fact that all I had to do to get it to work was reload some shells for it . I used the Woodleigh reloading...

Is there a sweet spot in the performance/cost spectrum for safari-grade rifles

Kevin Robertson in his book Buffalo Shot Placement and Trophy Evaluation says the 6 o clock hold is what you want to use. The CZ was rechambered by Triple River because I read on this forum that that would make it feed better. Some days it will not feed any blunt nose bullets coming from the...

Is there a sweet spot in the performance/cost spectrum for safari-grade rifles

I have the utmost respect for everyone here. If a person on this forum can get a 1200.00 DG rifle that works great my hat's off to them. It just didn't work for me. I have some small caliber bolt guns in CZ and Winchester , assorted AR 15's, 1911 Kimbers , S&W revolvers, and assorted autoloader...

Mr. Phil, I have three bolt guns CZ, Portugal made M-70 and a Kimber Caprivi two in 458 Lott and the 70 in 458 Win Mag. I went into detail on some other posts of the problems that I had with these rifles. I'll be be brief here. CZ has feed issues. Some days it feeds and some days it doesn't...

Is there a sweet spot in the performance/cost spectrum for safari-grade rifles

Friend, Take out a loan and be ready to spend 10,000 or better to get yourself a DG rifle that's going to work right out of the box. If you think Africa may be in the future don't go below .458 Win Mag. Bigger is better, bring enough gun, one shot bust em' on the spot. All this holds true with...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

I'm sorry friend I have to call like I see it. That being said if I have to buy another bolt gun I would look into a H&H, Heym, Mauser or Rigby and go ahead and pay the money. Especially in the .458 or bigger calibers. Its like buying a 28,000.00$ bass boat. If you're going to Africa to hunt an...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

My first bolt gun was a CZ Safari Magnum in .458 Win Mag. It shot good groups out to sixty yards. However it would not always feed round nose cartridges. I sent it to AHR for a rail job and back to Triple River for a warranty fix but still the same problem. I even had it bored to.458 Lott...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

I for one have learned my lesson buying cheap dangerous game rifles. I have three bolt guns to prove it. I finally wound up with a used Merkel double in .500 Nitro. It works. All my feed , accuracy and ejection issues disappeared with the Merkel. I believe there are good DG bolt guns out there...

CZ 550 classic safari vs Kimber 8400 Caprevi

I've had both in .458 Lott. The CZ want feed anything but pointed bullets. It went to AHR and back to the factory and still no help. The Kimber shot two feet low and after sight was adjusted all the way out it still shot 6 1/2" low. Also it would not eject loaded rounds. I sent it back to Kimber...

.500 Nitro Express whats your opinion

I have recently purchased a Merkel 140 in .500 NE. All I can say right now is that it blows way bigger holes in the ground behind my targets than the .458 WM and Lott does. It's a keeper.

    CZ 550 express sights... useless?

I bought all the different front sights for my CZ 550 Safari Magnum which is about 14 different sights varying in height. It made it a whole lot easier to dial in my reloads. Just remember a lower front sight makes the bullet hit higher and a higher front sight makes the bullet hit lower. I...

    Don Heath's 'All Round Rifle'

I just don't know if one rifle would do you in Africa. I feel if plains game is on the order a 3006 would be fine. However if I was going after the dangerous stuff I would take a 500 NE double for the simple fact that you could be charged by any animal from any direction and it don't necessarily...

    Kimber 8400 Caprivi

I also own a Kimber Caprivi in 458 Lott. Fit and finish is great. However, at 45 yards it shot about 2 feet low. Elevation is adjustable with the front sight. I run the sight all the way down as far as it would go and it still shot 4 to 6 inches low. It also was having problems ejecting. I sent...

    Completing the battery.....

I have just purchased a used Merkel 140 500 NE. I bought it after buying three different bolt actions in 458 Win Mag and Lott. Any experience with new M70's made in Portugal?

From what I've read on this forum and elsewhere the CZ works real well with pointed bottleneck bullets especially in the 375. The big shells is where you can have a problem. If CZ can get this problem resolved they will have the market cornered. I expect the price will be higher.

Any experience with new M70's made in Portugal?

I bought a Portugal made Model 70 in .458 Win Mag. It feeds and ejects everything I put in it. Accuracy wise it will only hold about two to three inch groups at 40 yards. My CZ 550 Safari Magnum in the same caliber will shoot about one and a half inch groups at 60 yards but it has feed issues...

Mark Sullivan kicked out of SCI

I feel like the man got a bad rap on the deal. I've never hunted Africa but I've hunted and baged game. When the bullets fly so does the blood, guts and the brains and preferably just the animals. This is part of it and it will never fly with the people that hate hunters and hunting no matter how...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

I have just purchased my first Dangerous game double in 500 Nitro. It's a Merkel 140 used. It shot about dead on from a standing rest at 50 yards. Group size was 2 1/2" W/ 4 shots. I shot two rounds offhand and they stayed within 3" dead on. I'm using Woodleigh 570 grain softpoints running about...

    Merkel 141 Experiences

I own a Merkel 141.1 in 3006 caliber. It has a single trigger. At 40 yards it shoots about 3 3/4" high. However, both barrels hit straight across from each other at about 1 1/4" from each other. Right barrel hitting right and left barrel hitting left. I am using reloaded Ammo with a 180grain...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

I here that they don't allow reloading in South Africa so you can only buy factory loads. I think if you're a non-resident coming into the country on Safari you can bring reloaded Ammo from what I have read on Africa Hunting threads.

    Kimber caprivi 458 Lott

I have a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in .458 Win Mag. I always had trouble with it feeding from the left side of the magazine. Big Bore Addiction Group

Mine started with a Shiloh Sharps long range express in 4570. The 405 grain hard cast bullet over black powder is extremely effective on white tail deer. .458 Lott advise

I have shot my rifle from the hood of my Toyota Tacoma using a shooting bag and set trigger with great results at 60 yards. It's the best bench I've found . I will look into those scopes. I wish this Leupold had more eye relief because I really like that fire dot.
