Rule Change May Devastate International Travel for US Hunters and Shooters

https://www.nraila.org/articles/20150403/rule-change-may-devastate-international-travel-for-hunters-and-shooters A 2012 State Department rule change added an important new requirement that the traveler declare rifles or handguns “upon each departure” by presenting documentation generated...

    30-06 recoil vs 300win mag.

Haven't heard that one before, In fact, I've heard more than one PH say too many clients hunt with too much rifle and don't shoot it well enough. On our last hunt, both the other hunters used 'manly' magnum calibers and took at least two shots on every animal. Everything we hit with the '06 was...

Bullets for Lion in 375 Rum

Seems to me like the accubond would be a good call here, but perhaps even the faster-expanding BT would be a good call. I'd ask your PH what he prefers though- after all, you are paying for his experience, you should take advantage. :)

Reminton 300RUM for Plains with 180 Barnes TSX

My wife and I took a bunch of plains game with a 30-06 shooting the MRX 180's and nothing took more than one shot, and we only had to track one animal (and that was because we went downhill and he went uphill, and though he didn't go more than 100 yards the brush was thick). every bullet exited...

Los Angeles trophy clearing and import duties

Does anyone know a good customs broker for the Los Angeles area? I'm considering using one, but I'd like to use someone local if at all possible. Also, I can't find any definitive information on the import duties due on hunting trophies... I know there are inspection fees, but does Customs...

Trophy's just about ready to ship. Need advice on clearing at San Francisco

I found this attached pdf document on the USDA/APHIS site (www.aphis.usda.gov), it's their reference manual for handling trophies and animal products... Good information here.

Traveling with Firearms to SA from the USA

We did this recently, a couple tips: Pay for the meet & greet and gun clearance services. It's not that much money (I think ours was $200 or so for two of us) and it will save you quite a bit of time and trouble. You can DIY but after all you've spent on the safari, this is a tiny amount that...

    BLUE WILDEBEEST PRACTICAL CALIBERS

I shot a nice big BW with a 30-06 using a 180grain Barnes MRX. It went all the way through both lungs and the major vessels of the heart, it walked about 40 feet and fell right there.

    6.5x55mm for Plains Game?

The 6.5 has killed thousands of moose in the last 100+ years.. It'll work great on plains game and give very little recoil. Bigger cartridges work too, but African plains game does not wear armored vests, despite what some would have you believe. Yes, a kudu is tougher than a whitetail, but...

    A question about optics

At least for me, optics help immensely and are much faster than iron sights. Iron sights are 'traditional' but date from a time when optics weren't a great choice for fast target acquisition and for following a running target. Iron sights require you to focus on the front sight for the most...

    Thumbhole stocks for heavy hitters?

I've always heard that heavy magnum calibers easily exceed the amount of recoil your thumb joint can take, and in a DG hunting situation they can slow down the handling of the gun.. But I suppose nothing is stopping you from giving it a try if you have very strong thumbs. :)

Looking for a quality light gathering scope for .308 BLR

+1 on the Zeiss Conquest, they are very good. Only downside is they don't make an illuminated version until you get into their much-much-much-more-expensive Victory line. Personally I find with my eyes I greatly prefer a little illumination when things get dim - those black crosshairs just...

Is the .375 H&H strong enough

Since the A-Frame is constructed similarly to the TBBC (except for the bonded-lead rear instead of a monolithic rear), and also generally retains 90-95% of its weight, I don't see how the A-Frame is better for light game only. Maybe you're thinking of the Nosler Partition, which isn't bonded...

ANYONE USING ONE OF THESE Caldwell Fire Control Front Rest...?

I have not personally, but I did find this short review online: Caldwell Fire Control Front Rest

    Mosin Nagant

I strongly endorse the 375H&H approach. There are plenty of used ones around, and several manufactures make relatively inexpensive and very high quality 375's currently. Load it up with some premium bullets and you're in business.

rifle for a 7 year old

The .243 is a great recommendation, but you could also try a 6.5x55. If you know anyone with any of those calibers, you might want to arrange a range trip so he can test-drive them and see how he responds. On our last safari in SA, one of the other guests had brought a 10-year-old girl who...

    338 Winchester Magnum

PS: If it were me, I'd probably just take the 375 (I love my 375, it's pretty light) or bring something smaller than a 338 as a second gun. If you don't need a 375 to kill it (which is just about anything under about 1600 lbs), a 308 or 30-06 will probably do the job very nicely and beat you up...

    338 Winchester Magnum

The 338 is great... IF and only if you can shoot it really well. It's more gun then you really need for plains game smaller than eland, and a lot of people bring heavy magnum calibers and a flinch, which is far worse than a smaller caliber you can shoot well. My wife and I took a 30-06 and...

    Factory ammunition for .375 H&H?

Another vote for federal premium here. My rifle really really liked the swift a-frame in 300g, and it's an awesome bonded soft point. The nosler partition didn't shoot quite as well for me, and I've never heard of a trophy bonded bear claw failing. The hornady 270 soft points didn't group quite...

CHOICE in .375 - Guidance please!

I have a Sako 375 and it's great, but it doesn't have a 'true' mauser action like the CZ does, though the bolt is a lot smoother (and doesn't jam or wobble). The CZ might take some work to make as 'slick' as the Sako but both are good choices.

    Effective range for a .375 H & H

The 375 has plenty of killing power out to 600+ yards, but the trajectory gets very steep after 400 or so... but the effective range is only as far as you can reliably hit the vital areas of the target. For some people that isn't even 100 yards. Practice until you know what your range is! It...

    Caliber Comparison

There's definitely the 'too close together' factor.. If you already have a 375 H&H, a 404 probably isn't a big enough 'step up' to be worth it unless you're just collecting rifles...

    Caliber Comparison

Also, since you asked.. Remember this doesn't reflect actual effectiveness in the field, and it doesn't account for shooter accuracy which is arguably the biggest factor. Also, some of these (like the 30-30) are a little weak for the larger plains game. Always consult your PH for advice on...

    Caliber Comparison

Most of your questions are answered by the actual data; the bullets used were 'heavy for caliber premium hunting factory loads' - Nosler Partitions, Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, or Hornady DGX, depending on what was available in that caliber as a factory load. If you're not familiar with the...

    Caliber Comparison

Based on some research I did to find the 'ideal' calibers for plains game as well as dangerous game, I did some analysis around the 'effective' power of various calibers. Based on the assumption that lower recoil = more practice = better accuracy, I wanted to find the combination of caliber /...

What 375 H & H rifle would you Purchase and Why

I would think anything upwards of 8 pounds would be acceptable for a 375, with heavier rifles kicking less, obviously. I suppose it's down to personal preference and how much you intend to carry it around. :) I've always heard that thumbhole stocks were a bad idea on big-caliber rifles, as...

What 375 H & H rifle would you Purchase and Why

I recently went through the same decision, and I ended up with a Sako Kodiak as my .375. It fit me better than most of the others, and it was the only one of the ones I spent time with (Kimber, Remington, Winchester, CZ) that didn't feel "cumbersome" (by this I mean awkwardly balanced, not just...

    Hunting ear protection?

Not true. Most rifles (especially magnum calibers) will make enough noise even without a muzzle brake to cause permanent hearing damage with each shot. The ringing will stop after a while, at first you'll think it's 'back to normal' but you never will be. It's cumulative. Muzzle brakes can...

Win Free Air Passes to Africa for 2011

In general, soft-sided luggage is better for carry-on items, as it can be squished a little if required to fit into an overhead compartment. Hard sided luggage is best reserved for checked baggage - you never know what kind of plane you'll be on, or how much overhead space will be available. If...
