    Thinking of selling my .404

What something was sold for years ago may or may not have a bearing on what it sells for today. Is my Chaupis DR still worth $7K because that is what I paid for it ~15 years ago or, is it worth the $5K~6K they generally sell for today? Like some of my custom knives that I bought for ~$300...

Those Fausti DR's look interesting! Thanks!

    Sako A7 in 416 Remingon?

I own 2 375H&H's and really need to sell one of them. I also own 416 Rigby that needs the AHR treatment or a new owner but, friends always ask about it so it still hangs around. Then there is the 470NE and the 458Lott. The 458Lott is a bit of the red-headed stepchild but, it does make a good...

    Sako A7 in 416 Remingon?

I like large diameter bullets! Classic calibers to me "seem" to recoil with more of a shove than the kick of the new trendy whizz bangs which is easier on my shoulder and back. Looking back through history, the 404 Jeffery was a solid working man's caliber. Unfortunately, the 416 Rigby was the...

Current (2021 - Covid Era) small caliber double rifle options?

Gunbroker is pretty thin right now. I was hoping I would find someone wanting to trade Grandpa's DR for a new 'assault rifle or pistol. Usually in times past, finding a few on Guns International was generally easy for reasonable prices in the 7mm calibers with .30's being few and far between.

Current (2021 - Covid Era) small caliber double rifle options?

Yes, I'm looking at an Angelo Zoli Double Rifle on-line in 308 Winchester for ~$3500USD. I'm a little hesitant to get a beltless and rimless DR but, this one looks interesting to me. I'm still thinking about a French 30-30 but, it looks like a 303 Brit might be a little better option for me...

Current (2021 - Covid Era) small caliber double rifle options?

That 30-06 rifle and a 308W are both options I've been considering Guns International along with a V-C O/U rifle.

Current (2021 - Covid Era) small caliber double rifle options?

Yes, a bit spendy for me right now. If I was shopping in the mid-teens, I'd be looking at a Heym or V-C. I know V-C doesn't get much love on this forum but, the one I have is really nice. With French O/U options running $4K in the calibers I'm interested in, I'd be hard-pressed to spend ~$14K...

Yes, that's where it caught my attention while looking for something else initially.

Current (2021 - Covid Era) small caliber double rifle options?

Where should one be looking for a SxS double rifle in a 7mm or .30 caliber rifle that isn't an expensive new build? I'm not really interested in a new Chapuis even though companies like Larkin and Moore generally stock double barrel set new builds in the $13K~14K range. I'm really thinking...

    Heym vs. Verney-Carron?

Yes, a .303 Brit is a good option for many in the EU but, a 30-30 is more widely available where I live in the USA. I can find 30-30 at places like Wal-Mart (at least prior to the current craziness) pretty easily but, 303 is a lot harder to find but it is easier to locate than my other classic...

    Heym vs. Verney-Carron?

He's my source for French rifles! When I was in the market a few years back, he was tops and I was fitted at the Dallas Safari Convention. I'm tempted to give it a go one more time for something like a 30-30 or similar that would see a lot more use than a heavy-hitting African caliber though...

Bummer! Did your delivery date slip? In my case, I always want to "brush up my skills" before I travel somewhere where I need to shoot well, whether targets or game.

Who’s going to Hunt Africa this year?

Biden's executive orders are apparently trying to emulate him. A Border Patrol offensive to arrest and deport illegals for sex crimes has been stopped. Deportations for DUI's and drug crimes have also apparently been stopped. So far, no $2,000 hotel prison stay requirement though. I hope he...

Who’s going to Hunt Africa this year?

Problems with travel restrictions locally in Canada or in Africa? Or like me, is reasonable airfare the problem? For me, the airline uncertainties with most options having a layover in Europe, plus costs that are all over the place with limited seating has me waiting for things to calm down...

Who’s going to Hunt Africa this year?

I was looking for basically any good opportunity outside of South Africa with good plainsgame opportunities. Anywhere that would take me within reasonable travel distance to Victoria Falls would have been sweet and Namibia has always been on my "bucket list".

Who’s going to Hunt Africa this year?

If you have the time and the money, you can still get to Africa but there are just too many uncertainties for me right now even if I had a free Safari waiting in Africa. What is the likelihood I could get my trophy out of Africa if I went? With no direct flights from the USA to Africa...

Stock Forend Separated During Shipping So, Slightly Bummed

rookhawk has been a totally "stand up class act". My intention was not to "out him" or imply any negativity his way. From all appearances, the rifle was packaged well and delivered safely. I can't fault him or the way it was packaged. I really like the rifle. This fix shouldn't be too hard...

Yes, that stuff is like welding two pieces of wood together. Some of it peeled the wood away before it separated at the joint with some of my hives.

Who’s going to Hunt Africa this year?

Yes, convicted drug abusers, robbers, rapists, murders, etc. are apparently more important than some other vulnerable groups in the public in some jurisdictions. I understand nursing homes and college dormitories for example but, prioritizing prisoners baffles me. With large numbers of...

Who’s going to Hunt Africa this year?

When I looked at possible flights from the USA to Africa, all routes went through the EU with most being Amsterdam, a few at Heathrow, and a smaller number out of Paris. Flying my rifle through Europe causes me some concern with EU and possibly local customs import and export issues. Now add...

Who’s going to Hunt Africa this year?

Best wishes for a good vaccine date and experience. I'm hoping I get a vaccine jab or two myself but, with 40 doses in my county (geographic region within Texas) and prisons and nursing homes in the area, even though I am in a priority group I don't expect to see one by Summer unless I get...

Stock Forend Separated During Shipping So, Slightly Bummed

Regarding furniture, glue joints typically do need to be reglued every few years. Moving during a household transition will generally ensure you need to reglue chair legs and similar things. I do reglue a lot of wood as a beekeeper and someone who has inherited a lot of older furniture...

Stock Forend Separated During Shipping So, Slightly Bummed

The only thing at the local Dollar General and Family Dollar were oil-based furniture polishes so it was a hard no to anything available to protect the wood locally. Instead, I got a little cling wrap to protect it from the rains and humidity we have right now. The rifle stock section appears...

Stock Forend Separated During Shipping So, Slightly Bummed

I'm a little hesitant to glue it myself as I don't want to mess up such a nice rifle. I'm headed to my local town to look for some furniture wax to protect the wood from moisture absorption induced swelling.

Wanted Good Used .470 Double Rifle

Where are you located? I'm in East Texas and could meet you near Dallas or OKC. I have a Chapuis 470NE I'd consider moving on as I don't see any hunts in my future that are in need of a 470NE. Plus, I have 4 of them so, I need to thin the herd to something I would use as I grow older.

Stock Forend Separated During Shipping So, Slightly Bummed

First of all, the rifle appears to have been packaged well so NO FAULT or negative feelings towards the seller! This is a really old rifle and I think it is mainly an age-related issue with the glue originally used. The rifle itself looks really nice, especially for something this old! What...

    Thinking of selling my .404

Without pictures, it is hard to say but from your description, I would say $2,000 to $3,000USD. I just recently purchased a 358 Norma Mag in a similar state without some of the extra flourishes of your rifle for $1200 plus shipping on a nice FN M98 action.

    Heym vs. Verney-Carron?

Yes, it is great if you can test-fire a double rifle from the brand you are considering before you buy one. Recoil and ergonomics can vary from different brands of double rifles, not just the caliber chosen. And as noted above, some just don't fit for reasons that aren't obvious to other people.

    Sako A7 in 416 Remingon?

A Heym Express in 404J! :p:love::p And yes, a ~$10K rifle is a bit hard for me to bang up with rough service but, you only live once and I'm not concerned about an inheritance to nieces and nephews or, my best friend who is doing well financially. I actually was turned onto the Heym Express...

    Sako A7 in 416 Remingon?

Whether I get this one and try a 404J conversion or just load some stiff feral hog medicine, a 404J is going to join me at some point. The nice thing about this one is throwing it in the gun rack on the tractor or UTV won't be a problem considering its low relative cost. I'm keeping an eye on...

That's a huge expense. Was it mainly taxation on an expensive shotgun or was it just "white glove" service?

    Sako A7 in 416 Remingon?

Why? What was better about the M70's versus the A7's? I know older Sako rifles had an awesome reputation and carried a big premium over similar USA offerings back in my early adulthood. Thanks! Sid

    Thinking of selling my .404

I'd like a guestimate of export/import costs to know if it is even worth contacting the seller. It looks like the rifle I am trying to buy but, I don't know if it is Rigby, Weatherby, or Winchester priced. ;)

    Sako A7 in 416 Remingon?

What are the thoughts on a Sako A7? Specifically, I'm looking hard for a 404J but, stumbled across a Sako A7 in 416 Remington. I'm not sure I would rebarrel it or try to convert it to 404J but, it looks like a nice rifle from the initial inspection. Cost-wise, initially, they are asking for a...

    Heym vs. Verney-Carron?

I can't speak to the other Heym's but, my 375H&H model is light and easy to carry, mount and, swing on target. If it had the 'sex appeal' of the V-C, I'd sell my other three and replace them with Heym's! What can I say, I'm pretty flexible with an attractive woman but, those French rifles...

    Chapuis

My V-C double came from them through the hands of its previous owner but, that was about 8 years ago. It looks like V-C might have changed their distribution in the USA though. Kebco certainly knows how to help you spec a superior rifle though.

    Heym vs. Verney-Carron?

JJ outside of Tulsa, OK is who I would use for any double rifle work I need. There isn't really any reason to send them back to Europe. I have heard he does some warranty work for some European brands.

    Heym vs. Verney-Carron?

Not ruffle anyone's feathers but, some of the comments here sound like an argument of Ford versus Chevy having some farkle the other doesn't and getting upset over the whole issue. I have done more than picking one up from a rack at a gun show. I have 'skin' in the game. I currently own the...

    Chapuis

You might reach out to Kebco. I know they brought in some Verney-Carron imports with splinter forearms. Since these are generally custom ordered and built, reasonable customizations are pretty easy for the most part. Regarding sanding down the forearm, that isn't an easy or practical thing to...

Price check on bullets and brass for double rifles

    Advice on self defense weapon

Trying not to get on a political soapbox but, after "freedom looters and rioters" being rewarded by politicians for looting to feed themselves and getting reparations before burning the store, I'm not holding my breath for people like Maxine Waters and her ilk sending the 'freedom rioters' to my...

    Advice on self defense weapon

Before we get off into the deep end of the pool, this member appears to be in Southern California with very limited firearms experience. An uncle's trophies apparently brought him here. That being said, I would recommend a local shooting club, not a gun shop, to find a firearm that fits you...

404J rifles custom build or secondary market?

404J rifles custom build or secondary market?

Lon, Your post is HUGELY appreciated! In a slow Safari market and tough economics here in the USA, I still hope I will stumble upon an older classic 404J that isn't priced out of reach. However, the M-70 rebuild is probably a very close facsimile to what the classic British rifles were in...

404J rifles custom build or secondary market?
