What Have You Killed with the 7x57

Hi Clodo, yes the barrel and action are from Zastava, but I hated the original stock so bought one in the rough from a stockmaker here in Australia. I finished it with about 7 coats of Tru Oil, and finished the inletting. Then I checkered it myself. I put the Pachmayr recoil pad on more for...

What Have You Killed with the 7x57

My 7x57 is still new but it's going out after Fallow deer in a week. My load for that is a Hornady 139gn SST with CCI primer and Norma brass. Powder is 51gn RL19. Nice accurate load. I've also tried 160 grain Woodleigh bullets. Great accuracy but have nothing to shoot at the moment that they...

    404 jeffrey or 416 rigby

I'd cast my vote for the 404. Great old cartridge, and with that little bit less recoil, probably easier to place your shot more accurately. I have a quote from a gunsmith to build one for a basic figure of $8,500 AU.

.404 JEFFERY - A Professional Hunter point of view

Funny I should stumble across this thread, I'm a CRF adherent, and if it doesn't have blued steel and walnut furniture, I'm sure it's not one of mine. My biggest dilemma at the moment is choosing between a 416 Rigby and a 404 Jeffery. The action WILL be a 98 Mauser regardless of the rest. I feel...

Rough it while you hunt it!

Thanks Jono, I'm a fit 70 year old and I hunt and fish in a lot of places in Australia so "rough" living has never been a problem. I'm also ex Army, and anything better than muddy bed and sleeping with leeches is downright luxurious. I have camped in the deserts here when the temperature got up...

    New one from Australia

G'day I'm John from Australia. I live in Northern NSW and hunt pigs, deer and goats. I may never get to hunt Africa, but if I do I have this idea that I'd like to do it "properly" not in a bit of private property where the animals are shot from hides or even vehicles. I have no wish to hunt...

Rough it while you hunt it!

I do plenty of bush camping in Australia regardless of weather, and I just think that what I consider a "traditional" African Safari is all about camping in the bush, and doing it the way people like Robert Ruark and legendary PH Harry Selby did it. Things have become too damn tame, we...
