    Short Barreled Double Rifles

I am aware of a Howdah rifle in 577 Snider, which is alleged to have 18” barrels and a short stock for use in the basket. I have handled a double pistol in the same calibre, whilst heavy in the hand, I imagine using it would be quite…..sporty. Mind you the circumstances behind it’s creation...

    CBL Debate Over, CBL Loses

HankBuck, J Ogilvie is 100% correct. You won’t see the ban reversed, it wasn’t really about CBL lions, rather it was an easy win for anti-hunting campaigners. The point being that the CBL element made it impossible to deflect. Note that the ban also included Leopard, which showed that the...

    CBL Debate Over, CBL Loses

I suppose now the link between petting zoos and bone exports can now pass directly, without the fig leaf offered by CBL shooting. Time will tell how long the zoos and bone export lasts.

Big Elephant Reportedly Taken in Tanzania

Something that is clear from this thread is that nobody really knows the full details other than those on the hunts and that the anti-hunting groups believe they have another opportunity to cast hunting in a negative light. Speculation is unhelpful and although there have been some quite...

What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

When I read the title I thought; “In case I stumble upon a lovely piece of mahogany I could whittle into an alluring shape”, then I realised that my whittling skills are more tuned to whittling my bank account away, so there’s that. I think the idea of taking one to leave behind is a great one.

Saw this on a FB page today

It took a few returns and some help to identify what Brickburn was in about. When I saw it, there was no doubt. I realise it is almost certainly a rubber mask, however as hunters, we need to consider carefully how we project ourselves, for recruitment as well as to minimise attack points. I...

Laymen: what have they asked you?

I’ve never heard anyone discussing hunting and women/sex in any way other than a benefit to the hunting being a way to get them away from women/sex. I would suggest the question says more about the people asking. I would be happy putting distance between myself and those people.

    Powder prices increasing?

Sporadic, periodically one category or another becomes available. At one point just one of the importers had a backlog of orders exceeding 15,000,000. There is a domestic supply capability, but current demand (the government is supplying “military aid” to Ukraine) means that if they are...

    Powder prices increasing?

Maaaaaate, down here in the South Pacific, we haven’t had a delivery of Alliant powder in more than 3 years, Hodgdon hasn’t been seen for 5 or more and even out locally made ADI is…sporadic in supply, with shot/pistol powders unavailable for a looooong time now. So if you can find it, buy it.

    Thoughts on Blaser BD14....

Totally missed this one… I dream of a BD14 in 8x57JRS, 5.6x52R with the standard 20/76. That said, the cost is more than I can bear, at least for now. I like the integral mount system and the adjustment that Rimshot refers to. If your combo purchase falls through, it would be a fantastic...

Non lead ammo barrel - what is that?

Banded bore riders have been the better choice ever since the Barnes X produced pressure spikes. Some projectile manufacturers get it, some don’t.

    Krieghoff Drillings

Magnificent find! 7x57R and 12/65 will be lower-pressure varieties of cartridges, especially with 1oz loads or lighter. I would stick with them and enjoy it. If your local laws allow it, overlapping seasons are no longer a dilemma of what gun to take.

    Need help with a drilling!

I suspect it is a bit hard and needs annealing for the neck and shoulder splits. Don't think it would help for case head separation though. I would go back to a chamber cast and work from there.

    Need help with a drilling!

I would do a chamber cast before doing anything else. Some brass will not work well (I have had poor results with S&B splitting necks in this calibre) no matter what you do, but case head separations are a whole other concern.

You will find that the VX-5 and VX-6 ranges from Leupold contain choices for straight tube scopes that wind down to 1x and up to 5x and 6x respectively. I have a Meopta and it works well, these Leupolds are the best from current production models. Vortex have a strike eagle with a 1-8x...

Fritz Weiss Suhl Germany Drilling....is this a gem or a dodo??

Having had mixed results buying bargain combo/drillings, if it floats your boat, buy it. I find them very good for mixed game from a fixed position (stand, high seat etc) and prefer them nowadays. I also prefer them for ducks, as they are a little heavier and swing more consistently.

Krieghoff Drilling with insert barrels help

You might want to look for a double rifle drilling, though as far as I know they have a 20 as the shot barrel. They are also expensive. 12g drillings are heavy and much less “swingable” than the 16 or 20 size. However if you’re limited by supply it’s the way to go. The Zoli is what I would...

    Woodleigh Hydro for buffalo?

Excellent report. Shirley advised me the other day that they don’t intend to produce the 232Gr 9.3 or 235Gr .375 Hydro as they are too low volume. I asked how many they would need and haven’t had an answer yet. I hope they do, I prefer the lower weights for my applications.

    Uk Trophy Ban news

Apparently the market has been shifting to Russia and SE Asia for a while, but it’s quite sad for the UK. Replica makers will offer some hope, but frankly I don’t know whether it’s better to keep hunting overseas and have replicas made, or hunt in Scotland and the like while you still can.
