    .458 Lott advise

If you are struggling with eyesight, the red dot might be problematic. Normal aging of the eyes means that our close sight starts to diminish, thus the red dot forms a ghost ring and appears much bigger, making it difficult to see the target. The big advantage of the red dot is that the action...

My new and favourite big bore

Congratulations on your new baby, believe you will dearly enjoy it (seems you already do). Just some advice on load development and shooting of the bench, never easy with these big bores. I own and shoot a .458 Lott and bench work is hard, so I devised a sling that I throw over a tree or roof...

    .458 Lott advise

Hi Rob Just my little comment to all the above. Yes, the 458 is a big gun, but rather push than kick in the recoil. I have a CZ 550 458 Lott with a straight stock. the fit of the gun is utterly important. Make sure the gun fits you properly. If possible avoid shooting from the bench and...

Bow hunting large animals - is it ethical?

It was really interesting to read all the comments and see the difference in opinions. I hunt with rifle and bow and both kill as long as the shot is in the correct place. I have never seen any animal shot through the heart and or lungs that did not die, if the animals doesn't die, you did not...

    HUNTING Wildebeest

Don't worry so much about the gun, make sure you know where to place the bullet.... People are easily fooled by deep chested animals (WB, gemsbuck, eland). Remember, the bigger the target the bigger the miss! aim small and miss small. I don't know of any animal that has been shot through the...

A little scope help please... Trijicon TR25 1-6x25

Hi WildRose Firstly, the definition of a "gun nut" is when you have more rifles than you can shoot in one calendar year (a rifle a day keeps the insaneness away!) Hunting in Africa, bring the .375 and 300WM (it is just more fun shooting with 2 rifles than one). I normally travel with an...

    Hornady 375 220grn FP

If you are reloading with softer bullets, just keep speeds under 2,300 fps. I am not a real fan of using softer bullets, but for putting holes in paper its fine. In Africa you are always shooting at something in a bush, thus avoid softer bullets and use the best you can buy. A 300gr soft type...

    HUNTING Gemsbok

I had to take this bull down as it had a broken right shoulder and was unable to walk. the shot was taken after running 800m after him in very thick bush. Luckily I had my .375 H&H loaded with 300gr Hornady DGX with me and could take the shot through thick bush at 60m at him. The bullet broke...

What is next after .375 in bolt action Rifle?

Hi Gert I 100% agree with you on the 404 Jeffery, it has soul!! But like the .416 Rigby it is close to the .375 H&H. Maybe I should just re-think this plan... I want something BIG, but also want to shoot with it regularly and as I thought, there are enough different opinions out there as to...

    HUNTING Gemsbok

Many novice hunters want to follow after the animal directly after the shot. A badly injured gemsbuck will reverse into a thicket and wait head-on for his assailant to arrive, ready with those deadly horns pointed forward. many hunters have been injured by the presumed dead buck that with his...

    HUNTING Wildebeest

I am probably the most addicted hunter of Blue wildebeest (rifle and bow) and I am always lucky to find one, even when I said that I am not going to shoot one on this trip, they just keep on appearing in my scope... They do make beautiful floor rugs with that unique black/blue shade skin and...

What is next after .375 in bolt action Rifle?

I don't really know about that, some of these warthogs can be very dedicated on ripping you to threads and don't like dying easy, bullets smaller than .30 seem to bounce of their hides like air gun pellets from and elephants behind!! You really do need a lot of gun to hunt them with... Only...

What is next after .375 in bolt action Rifle?

If you need a good explanation to get the new gun and don't want to end up on the couch, I have plenty of good reasons (can write a book...maybe not such a bad Idea..."Explain to your wife why an additional gun in one minute!") I do fancy the .450 Rigby (not afraid of the thump), so maybe I will...

What is next after .375 in bolt action Rifle?

I like the way you think... I fully agree on the .458 Lott, making a .458WM better doesn't have the same nostalgia as a classic (that is exactly why I have a .375 H&H). I use all my rifles to hunt with and love shooting then regularly, so going big sounds like getting a .450 Rigby. The .416...

    Accuracy problems with CZ550 in .375 H&H

Yes I reload everything. I have tried various factory ammo, but same results. My reloads seem very accurate over the chrony with extreme spread of only 10 fps and std deviation of 6 fps (5 shot groups). On paper this should be as accurate as you can get.... as far as myself, I don't flinch at...

    Hornady 375 220grn FP

unless you are hunting in Namibia or the Kalahari region, most shots will be 100m or less. you don't need a "flat" shooting cartridge, just use normal 270gr or 300gr Hornady or Federal ammo (not sure if you are reloading or use factory ammo). 235gr TSX works great for the "lighter side of the...

    HUNTING Wildebeest

I really enjoy hunting blue wildebeest and have shot many over the years with rifles from .308 to .375. taken quite a couple with my bow as well and found them to be easier with the bow as they present a large kill zone and are not skittish (prone to string jump). The biggest mistake new...

    Accuracy problems with CZ550 in .375 H&H

Just an update. I have read through all your advice and tested everything, from removing and re-fitting the optics, to changing and holding the rifle differently. Still the same result. And it's not consistently shooting the first 3 rounds sub MOA, out of any 5 shot group, 3 would be close (MOA...

    Accuracy problems with CZ550 in .375 H&H

Hi Jaco I agree with your statement, but then the barrel would shoot consistently larger groups, not shoot sub-MOA and suddenly a flyer or two. this looks like a disturbance somewhere on the barrel. I hope changing the lug will sort this out, waiting to get time to go to the range and test again....

Hi Yes it is, but I have and shoot regularly other big bores. I do shoot with my off-hand on the sand bag, etc... I will try holding on to the front of the rifle. I might have found another possible problem. Directly behind the front lug screw on the barrel, it is touching the F shaped lug...

Hi Cornelius. A very important question is, are you going to reload or buy ammo? If buying ammo is your choice, the 30-06 is better as you are able to purchase 200 and 220gr rounds for the 30-06 (if you are going after blue wildebeest, zebra or eland). The 308 is slightly more limited as to...

Hi jduckhunter, thanks for the welcome. I realized the 4" is tough, specially trying to understand wind at that distance. I regularly practice shooting at 500 meters (shooting range only 500m) and have shot some 1-1,5" groups. Reading the wind remains the biggest challenge.
