A time to sell & a time to buy

MY prayers and well wishes for your surgery and recovery. I purchased a 404 J from you about 6 years ago, rest assured that it went to a good home.

    Old firearms ad

Cash_tx, I still have my Ruger Deerslayer (it's not for sale.) Seems to me I remember Springfield 03(s) being sold for $19.95 plus $5.00 shipping and handling via REA Express. I had a large newspaper route at the time, and could have covered the cost with less than a week's pay. I distinctly...

    Reloading for Dangerous Game

CBH Australia, perhaps I should have been a bit more specific. I was thinking about projectiles for the 375 H&H. Going a little further who is one of the very few providers of large caliber bullets i.e. those calibers that begin with a 4, 5, or 6? Apart from that, the Woodleigh bullets I...

    Reloading for Dangerous Game

CBH Australia, I agree with all of the reloaders comments. Re. the best projectile that might be up for grabs. But let me ask you a question, when is the last time you heard or read of a complaint with Woodleigh bullets? Work up a load for their Soft Nose and Hydrostatically Stabilized...

Fresh From Germany: Mauser M98 125th Anniversary Cased Rifle in 8x57

    Cz550 sight question

For target shooting, I prefer the 6:00 hold. However for hunting I prefer point of aim, i.e. the bullet hits just above or at the top of the front sight. Peeps or Ghost Rings work best for my old eyes.

    CZ in 300 H&H Pricing??

IMHO the CZ 550 in 300 H&H Mag is more than way overpriced. Seems to me I've seen pre 64 Winchesters go for a lot less than $5,000.

    Hello from Pennsylvania

Hooper, I couldn't agree with you more. I always take two rifles when I go hunting. My sons, their sons and I hunt out of my cabin. Since space isn't an issue, I often take several extra rifles. Are you looking for another Winchester or are other brands on the menu as well?

How do you sharpen your knife?

I use a number of different sharpeners for different knives. I use a Lansky with stone and or diamond blades as appropriate. I also used a Ken Onion to sharpen a group of Cold Steel Master Hunters. For field use I use a "Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener," they cost about $35 and are readily...

    375 ready to hunt

Rbros, cudos that is one hell of a group. I too thought your velocity was / is much faster than normally achieved. So just for the heck of it I ran a QuickLoad simulation for a 26" barreled 375 H&H AI using 300 Gr. SAF(s) and Reloader 16. To get 2800 FPS it was only a shade over 12,000 lbs...

Best practice vs good enough for hunting

John the Electrician, as a "new" reloader, I'd suggest that you read Nathan Foster's book entitled "The Practical Guide to Reloading." Fill this Rifle Gap

AaronN, unlike you, I have an affinity for the 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser, including the rifle itself. I have given both of my older grandsons sporterized versions that they use for deer and hog hunting. I've taken mine to Africa, my youngest grandson will be taking his to Africa this July...

    Stuck case extraction

Put both into a freezer. Preferably one used for long term storage. These are usually held at -10 F vs a refrigerator freezer. When cold, quickly hold the die firmly in a vice and tap the case out using a suitable punch. I've done this in the past, it works sometimes but not always.

Range days sometimes go poorly...as in Ka Boom!

Stoppelman, kudos for posting this. Even though events like this can make you feel stupid, it serves as a reminder to all of us that reload, to double check everything we do. I know the feeling, having done equally stupid things on my reloading bench. Paul Mauser's design saved my sorry butt...

Third Bite/Greener Crossbolt On Double Rifles. (Or Lack Thereof)

    Conversion to 9.3x62

I've given a copy of this article to several local "gunsmiths." To a man, they'ed never seen it before. In 2018 was having trouble getting a 404 Jeffery to feed properly. The local smiths couldn't fix the problem and I finally had to send the rifle off to someone that knew what he was doing...

Official AH Get Together In Nashville During Safari Club International (SCI) Convention 2024

    Kicking back now

Cjack, the reflections on your "current self" sounds like many of our own. Where do you live and what have you hunted? Unlike you, I only have one Weatherby caliber rifle. That being a 1936 Winchester Model 70 that started out as a 30-06 and was rechambered. I hunt whitetails in Michigan and...

300 WM guidance for plains game - powder and bullet size

Prior to purchasing a 35 Whelen for my youngest son, we'd planned on him taking a 300 Win. Mag. on a PG hunt in 2016. I asked IvW (who is a Professional Hunter) what bullet he would recommend. His reply was a 200 Gr. Swift A Frame. I doubt you will find many experienced hunters that would...

    35 whelen pressures

I've been using Norma brass and IMR 4064 with 225 Gr. Barnes TSX bullets. Velocity is 2730 FPS out of my 23 & 1/2" barrel. Accuracy in both my rifle as well as my son's is under an inch. I bought an 8 lb. keg of CFE 223 but so far haven't tried it out. My range brass has been reloaded four...

gcbailey, that is great news. Before he got "to big for his britches" Wayne was good for the NRA. These last 7 -10 years not so much. I've been a proud Benefactor Member for a long time. Now I may start contributing again depending on how the organization goes.

We are taking my Dad on his FIRST African Safari!!!

Gina, taking your dad on an African hunt is a fantastic idea. He can use your 404 Jeffery and you can back him up with your 450 /400. Have you decided on an outfitter yet, or are you waiting till after the SCI Convention in Nashville to do so? Who knows maybe we can arrange a hunt for your...

OEM stocks cracking and or breaking

S-3 Ranch the article you posted was very interesting, not to mention educational. Before I do anything else to the stock, I'm going to remove the action to see if by chance this rifle has "internal" crossbolts. Before reading the article, I was unaware of this possibility. BTW where is...

OEM stocks cracking and or breaking

My most recent acquisition was a CZ 550 in 458 Lott built in 2007 that I suspect is most likely unfired or at most fired very little meaning a box or less. This rifle doesn't have any crossbolts in the stock and that worries me. Some of you suggested that I have them installed, others have...
